Wow. This idea of the surprise album next week based on the "invisible. Visible." stuff seems a bit much. I get that we are desperate for news etc, but really?

Did no-one pick up that 'visible' could quite literally be referring to the fact that a video (i.e. a visual medium that can be made 'visible') is coming out? It quite literally means that Invisible will become visible.

I think sometimes we twist our desires so far around and interpret the most basic piece of news to mean whatever we want. It will come out when it comes out. They have a plan, chill and watch it unfold.

It's also based on a tweet in which a guy claims that his Interscope contact started that a surprise release is happening.

Speaking of that tweet, we should watch it. If it gets taken down, that will give it a bit more of a chance of being legitimate, in my mind.

But we always knew it was a possibility, the LA Times article said so - why do we think it's happening in the next few days when the band have said they aren't finished many times?

When Beyonce did it she looked like a genius; U2 doing it will make them look like imitators or worse.

When Beyonce did it she looked like someone jumping on a surprise release trend that was celebrating its sixth birthday.

It wasn't even the most surprising surprise release. Ever heard of My Bloody Valentine?

We don't (or, at least I don't). But the tweet stated that it would be coming out (depending on your interpretation) on the 11th or the 18th. This would imply that the band have been engaged in an operation of wholesale fabrication. Again, not implausible (in my mind), but probably not what is actually happening.

Yeah. Because of this tweet, the rumor is definitely worth discussing... even though I have my doubts.

:lmao:

How about 'Clay Aiken 4 Congress'? :reject:

:up::D

I don't know that U2 would get that much, if any, bad press if they did a surprise digital release.

I guess they could do the digital release and then follow-up with a disc in however long it takes to get them to the shops or whatever.

Though I doubt that seriously.

I wouldn't be surprised after tracking the response to the song 'Invisible' if they did a couple of OMAHAs and decided to call 'invisible' the first single and also the name of the album, and release it ahead of June whatever.

Or, I wouldn't be surprised if they did none of the above and pulled out another single in april with the album in june.

Speculating about all of this is like trying to pick the winning lottery numbers. Its fun...but good luck. The guy who tweeted that this would happen likely heard it from a friend who, heard if from a friend who, heard it from another u2 been messin' around.

YES.

And Bowie's was truly unexpected. I remember that one actually caught me off guard.

Beyonce's was more....irritating. On a Friday morning...it kinda looked like she was trying too hard to make all the weekend news stories.

That said, she also filmed FOURTEEN VIDEOS in secret. If she can do THAT, there's no reason U2 can't keep an album quiet.

I'm sceptical, but have to admit it would be hilarious if these speculations were true. Dun dun dun, the Invisible album that got launched without a leak. It'd be worth it for the stealth puns.

If they surprise dropped the album everyone on here would go crazy and not give a shit what they said in the week preceding its release. I doubt anyone would be like "oooo new u2 album, just jumping on the surprise trend, how original". I would be pleasantly fucking surprised and would much prefer that they "lied" to the press instead of going off to tinker with what may be already a finished album for another year. I hope they release ANOTHER album the day after THIS one, and then ANOTHER album the day after THAT! I would LOVE a surprise album every day for the next year!

Ha! True. :) If this comes to pass you could just end up being the smartest person on Interference (not that this is saying much).

And of course I would be too excited to hear the music to care much if they lied; that said, I'd still just kind of roll my eyes and think it was kind of lame, since they really didn't have to. And if they do this, the music BETTER be just off the charts good. If it's great, the story will be that they're geniuses and all will be right with the world. The key will be if the music really takes off and is buzzed about in a positive way in social media (the traditional press loves everything U2 does anyway).

If it falls flat ala Boots/NLOTH and people don't talk about it, that's another story.

Thanks guys - I just looked up the tweet - interesting, but definitely not conclusive. Hey, we can all dream right? I just won't get my hopes up too high...

THIS. The puns alone.

We're gonna need a new thread by then. Someone get creative.

This is being passed around on FB; anyone read it here yet?
U2 Drops ‘Invisible’ to Remind You the Band Exists - The Daily Beast

Early mention of the album:
Bono called the cut a “sneak preview” of their upcoming album

Last line of the article:
We will soon know whether they have found the sweet spot yet again.

Just like the LA Times article....that one ended suggesting they'd go a-la Beyonce. :hmm:

Can I make it for you?

I already have it picked out.

I have to believe that the guy who tweeted this believes that it's true. The bigger question may be, did the guy who told him that really know what the hell he was talking about?

And If the album does come out next week, I'm not sure I would say the band has been "lying" per say. They've been very coy with their answers. Although Bono did say it would be done "in a couple of months" in his interview last week.

What I can say for sure is that if they don't put it out until June, there will be virtually no promotional tour they can do then, that will match what they're doing now. In America, it doesn't get any bigger than the Super Bowl and the premiere episode of the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

That the tweet is gone reduces my confidence that the album won't be released this month from about 99% to about 95%.

 This.

It makes perfect sense for an album to either come out on the 11th (so as to surprise everyone before Fallon), or the 18th (so Fallon can be the one to announce it).

Idea: one of us should tweet about a (nonexistent) contact at Universal saying that the album will be released in the coming weeks to see if a cease and desist notice or something similar comes.
