Whats the special announcement tomorrow?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

We are waiting ages for something to happen now and.... there should be a new album in 2009, then 2010, then 2011, then 2012, now 2013. Danger Mouse has been booked for two years now, which is very unusual. The band was working on three albums. We know there must happen something in the near future. To be honest I was expecting an audio snippet of a new song followed by an album announcement for early 2013.
Back in 2010 there were polls when an album would have been released. Most fans expected an album by the end of 2010. Only a few, the most negative, but realistic fans thought it would be a 2013 release. I was in the first group. I thougt the band wanted to break a tradition by release an album within a year or two. It turned out to be another four year wait. Given this..... I think the reaction of the fans to the announcement, including me, is not strange at all. U2 has become a moneymaking machine for the recordcompany, where spontanity and creativity is a dirty word.

I was in the latter group. People told me I was being negative indeed, lol, who's being realistic now?

So this Tiesto remix of Pride was some big thing for u2.com subscribers?

Why not just mail them dead squirrels?

I wonder if Tiesto is playing it at Stereosonic :hmm:

Isn't his set (amongst others) being broadcast online as part of some Red/World AIDS Day thing? I'd put money down that he'll inflict it upon Melbourne and the world.

Maybe he'll incorporate Every Breaking Wave (Perfecto Mix) and 30-second snippets of Songs of Ascent in the set.

No idea, I've long since stopped caring about that festival. All I know is the last thing any of the drugged-up bros at Stereo want to hear is Bono.

has it even been cleared up yet as to whether this is an itunes only release, or physical copies available in places like starbucks? I havent seen info on this anywhere

How did they over-hype this release? I see that phrase being thrown around here, the over-hyping, but I didn't see it. U2.com sent out an announcement that there would be something exclusive for U2.com subscribers and they sent it out two days in advance. That's not over-hyping to me. It's not even trying to create a hype. It's just one message.

It's not suprising at all. People here tend to over analyse and read things into every word that U2 puts out...which generally means reading whatever they hope will happen into whatever ambiguous thing the band (or their representatives) say. The basic rule seems to be "if it doesn't say what I want, I'll just pretend it does" only to feel mad a betrayed when it doesn't. That includes this rather innocuous email and, um, press releases.

U2 certainly hasn't done anything wrong here, other than not making music at EYKIW's timetable, and/or being 100% transparent with everything they do every moment they do it. Anyone who got themselves worked into a frenzy over this only to be bitterly dissapointed has no one to blame but themselves.

So it is our fault that U2.com over-hyped this release? Just because of the bad track record doesn't mean people should expect to be deceived like this does it?

I mean, U2.com HAVE picked up their game lately, and I don't think anyone complaining genuinely thought it would be something good - more like they had very slim hopes they might actually deliver.

Just because it is expected doesn't mean it is acceptable.

Your argument is redundant.

The argument that just because its expected doesn't make it acceptable is fine.

The shock and outrage that it was just a lame remix is idiotic and laughable. It was clear as day that this wasn't going to be any sort of new music announcement. They would never in a million years announce a new single with "hey, wanna hear something strange?"

So I think a lot of people simply read way too much into the email. So yes, I would say those who got themselves over hyped over this? Yea... Their own fault.

They let their desire for new music cloud something that was incredibly obvious.

Guys, the glaring omission of the words "new" and "music" in the press release was no mere accident, and should have been your first clue. Every conclusion you jumped to as a result of missing these obviously deliberately excluded words is your fault and your fault only.

Not remastered. Not new.

also, do you guys believe it merited the whole time zone hype?? i think that was overkill for just a remix really... i think that was one of the reasons people's expectations were raised...

i wasn't particularly disappointed as i've learnt to be cynical as far as U2 go sadly... but watching the whole saga unravel was pretty funny because the remix was already out there and old news to the die-hards! and i love any opportunity to point and laugh at u2 dot com :D (i've had a grudge against them ever since they ditched the original Zootopia, those bastards! lol)

although i did feel pretty bad for those who hung around specially waiting for the "event" - which i didn't do luckily for me!

What time zone hype? Yes, someone at the U2.com message board posted what 8PM GMT is in the different time zones. As many usually have questions on this and are unable to convert it to their local time. Why is that overkill? But probably the expectations were raised of the same people that cannot figure out on their own what 8PM GMT is in their timezone.

That too. If there really was some new music announcement (or rather, new music premiere) U2.com would not send a message two days in advance basically saying "tune in then and then". No, that one would probably be hyped in advance and would contain information that it would be new work from U2.

ouch!

they could've just sent out a standard email with a link to the song, rather than asking people to sit in front of their computers for a specific time plus or minus 90 minutes (on thanksgiving to boot!) LOL

Yeah, I think that's the big fault of U2.com here. While I agree that it was ridiculous of people to think we were getting a new single or album announcement, I can see why people were disappointed that we only got a remix of a 30 year old song.

but it wasn't exactly "exclusive" either though was it? :D

We like to bring our U2.com subscribers rare and unusual U2 content - and we like to bring it to them first.

Sign in to the site tomorrow evening, Thursday 22nd November, (8pm GMT), and be the first in the world to hear some pretty special audio.

That's all we're saying for now!

Best wishes
The U2.com Team.

They didn't use the word "exclusive" in the press release either. You imagined it, clearly.
