Also, I think the two surest things in this race are Firth and Fincher, regardless of what happens in BP. Tom Hooper is NOT winning director, and the Coens aren't likely to take it again so soon.

Supporting Actor a weak category?

All the Social Network fans are pushing for Andrew Garfield.
Geoffrey Rush gets big notice in Kings English
Jeremy Renner is electrifying in The Town
Christian Balee is outstanding in The Fighter, I hope that film gets some noms,

It's weak in that there isn't a large pool that's being discussed and not too hard to get into compared to something like Best Actress, where there are at least 3 award-worthy perfs that aren't even going to get nominated.

Lead Actor is pretty strong too.

I see your point

I think Rush and Bale are locks for nominations

Aaron Eckhart is very good in Rabbit Hole, he could get nom for supporting Actor

Kidman could get nom for Actress

I still need to see 'Biutiful', Javier Bardem may deserve another nomination

right now I will say Bale is more deserving for Supporting Actor win than Firth is for Best Actor.

Firth seems like a nice guy, but I have a hard time believing he turns in one of the five best perfs of the year, let alone the absolute best.

He was much, much better in A Single Man, a more nuanced performance.
Also a better film.

He wins for this, because as they said in The Extras, it is a Rainman-like role.

(not to mention, everyone has a friend, or family member that stammers, and we all hate Hitler)

Yeah, if Hailee Steinfeld gets a Supporting Actress nomination, that would be just embarrassing. It's her movie. I hope she gets a nomination for lead, but it doesn't really matter because she and the other three nominees are just going to get crushed by Natalie. I can't wait for her to win that shit. Easily one of my favorite individual performances in a film, ever.

As for Supporting Actor, I'll definitely be rooting for Andrew Garfield, if they choose to nominate him. And I don't think there's a chance anything is going to beat out The Social Network for Best Picture. And I'm totally cool with that, I thought it was brilliant. I'd love to see Black Swan beat it, wouldn't like to see True Grit beat it, and I haven't even seen The King's Speech yet, so I can't comment on that.

No, I have not. But I have loved Amy Adams ever since I saw Junebug (beautiful movie, and props to Roger Ebert, because his strong praise of it made me check it out) so I will probably have to get out and catch The Fighter at some point. Not a big fan of Mark Wahlberg's acting (?), though.

I think there's a chance that TSN (not unlike its main character) might lose on sheer likability factor. The Academy after all have a history of voting with the heart over the brain (see: Forrest Gump over Pulp Fiction, Million Dollar Baby over The Aviator).

review threads always have spoilers?

Also, you gotta love how quickly Hollywood and American moviegoers went from waying "Who?!?" when Andrew Garfield was cast as Spider-Man, to seeing he's a star on the rise and very likely to be an Oscar-nominated actor quite soon. I just hope he manages to still do smaller films as well.

In the past I'd say yes, but in recent years we've seen some exceptions to that rule: The Departed, No Country For Old Men, and The Hurt Locker were not heartwarming films. I think that as the generations change the overall open-mindedness of the Academy is changing as well.

Slumdog Millionaire certainly fit the old pattern, but it's still fairly impressive that voters picked a film consisting of all Indian characters, not to mention something with a title consisting of the word "slumdog". I don't think this would have won ten years earlier.

totally agree,

watched it twice in a theater, first time opening week end - good size crowd, a lot of fun

second time, a few weeks later with about 10 people, I was the only one laughing at Knives expressions. Much more fun with a crowd.

You can write a review without spoilers; Most movie reviews don't want to give away key plot points and endings, but why not just include tags if you really want to include spoilers? It's not like this is a Black Swan thread. I like to read other reviews, but there have been a couple one sentence posts in here that aren't reviews that have ruined the end of the film for me. It's kinda hard to avoid them

why are you complaining
you open and read the spoilers anyways

Because there have been several that werent spoiler tagged. That one was clearly suspicious. If I opened it and ruined a movie, that's my problem. Why is it such a big deal to ask that people dont ruin movies? Why do you act like such a gigantic a-hole?

I hope Bale gets the award, he was great in The Fighter...all around talented and unappreciated actor...

I'm sure The Fighter (and True Grit) is going to get tons of noms, but like many great films, it will be out-shined by another film...probs The Social Network

I thought Renner was better in The Town than The Hurtlocker *Kanye Shrug*

Question: WTF happened to Shutter Island along the way? I think the February release killed any chance it had of even receiving nominations, sacrificing awards for box office gains...I know I'm a Leo stan, but he gave his 2nd best performance of his career in SI (#1 being Catch Me If You Can)

I've seen most everything so far
and in my opinion Bale for Supporting Actor should be the surest thing.

Renner is top notch in The Town, keep in mind he did not win Best Actor for Hurt Locker, Bridges won for Crazy Love. I think I like Bridges better in Grit, But, I can't see him winning back to back, though he could get another nomination.

I like Leo alot these days. I think his best work was in The Departed and perhaps Black Diamond. I am not as big of a fan of Shutter as many in here. Too much obvious CGI for me and I agree with the critics that do not include it in Scorsese's best.

I am glad that Eastwood's last film, Hereafter is getting overlooked too.

If Tom Hanks can pull off back to back Oscars...I think The Dude has a shot...

He was outstanding in True Grit, and hilarious: "You are not LaBeouf", I died LOL

I can see where u are coming from with the CGI, I'm in no way implying it should win Best Picture or sumthing, just throw it a nomination...

If one win was for Philadelphia, I can support that.

I hope he did not win for Gump, that film is a low point,
they will probably give it a new theatrical release in 3D.

You're not alone, Knives totally steals the movie.
