Stand Up Comedy: one of the worst ever?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

I know everyone here hates Crazy Tonight, but it's got the strongest melody on the record.

You don't come up with something like that as an "afterthought".

Crazy is doing pretty well in the top 50 U2 songs competition so far, it's doing better than 4 other songs on the album. It's nowhere near hated

It's my favourite song off the album. Might possibly become one of my favourite tracks in general. The bass riff is great, very non-Adam like, the drums are great. Guitar is typically Edge-y yes, but it suits the song. And I like the additional piano bits.

I do not understand the hate.

As said before, people don't appreciate a fun song anymore these days.

I agree with you. It's almost "uncool" to be happy or have fun or try to create something "joyful."

I't not one of my favorites on the album but the hating here seem a bit over the top.

Now as for "Boots" I could REALLY see where someone could absolutely, positively say it's possibly the worse U2 song ever, I thought in time it would grow on me but it hasn't.

Stand Up Comedy and GOYB are "The Fly's" of their era. I remember when I first heard "The Fly" I was totally confused. I mean I loved the guitar, but the vocals were way weird and it just seemed kinda strange...I love the song today, but at first I hated it.

I'm pretty sure Boots will get that kinda reception in hindsight....SUC...well it's a rocker and it's closer to what U2 did with the last two albums, so I think it's getting slagged for that reason...

even if u dont like boots u have to admit that it is innovative and much more complex that SUC and for me that is what they were trying to achieve on this album therefore boots is inherently better for me - plus I may even like elevation better than SUC and that is says a lot

I'm beating dead horse here, but how is Boots "innovative" again?

no I really don't have to admit Boots is innovative at all, I will give you it is more complex of a song but I just really can't stand it, I can't find a redeeming factor in it at all except for when I see them in concert and when they play it I'll have a chance to get some beer or hit the bathroom.

sorry i couldn't agree witchya

Boots has a lot of production flourishes, but it's really not that complex. The chorus is a little unusual for them with that half-step up, but that's about it.

As much as SUC is loathed around here, I don't think it's fair to say that it's simple. The verses might seem a little rock-bland or whatever, but this song actually has a more complicated structure that a lot of U2 songs.

I really like just about everything about the song except the STAND UP parts in the verses with the patented RAWK background vocals for extra 'tude.

The song is simple because the message is simple. There's hardly a more simple thing to say than Stand Up! I listened to the lyrics very closely yesterday and I really don't think these are weak lyrics. They might be ironic and playful, but also strong. I really like the subtle vocals in the lines about love being evolution's best day. The song really gives me shots of adrenalin from beginning to end and I think it will be a monster song live.

boots is innovative i think - if u listen to the song its like 3 songs in 1 the chorus goes someplace completely different than the verses and the let me in the sound breakdown is yet another transition. Also there is a great use of production magic in the song. For example the first 2 min or so sound very different than the let me in the sound section which has an open space, echoing type sound that the rest of the song doesn't have (this unfortunately can never be created live as Im sure they recorded larry in a large space for this section)

All Im saying is if u dont like boots (which many dont) maybe that is a sign of how different and uncomfortable the song is and for me this isnt a bad thing

Now on the other hand stand up comedy is just bland and cheesy

Re: Larry
It's not 1971 and it's not Led Zeppelin recording drums in a stairwell. The "Let me in the sound" is easily a sample you can get from any one of dozens of drums programs out there. If it's not that, and I hope to God it's not, then it's simply alot of reverb on his electronic kit, which he seems to play for most of the record.

Also, I like different and uncomfortable. But it seems to me I'm the only person this entire board who feels like Boots is too similar to Vertigo. I've gone into all the reasons why before and can't stomach going back into them again. To each their own.

However I agree with you about SUC.

I think my favorites from this record seem to be
Magnificent
MOS
Cedars
Crazy (everyone hates it, and it is a cheezy title, but the melody on the chorus is great imo).

Also, I like
NLOTH

and a bit of
UC
Fez

I don't mind, but wish there was something else, of
WAS
Breathe (I don't get the love for this track at all....but again, glad y'all are enjoying it)

Absolutely can't stand:
Boots
SUC

This record is far from classic for me, but you know, at least they're still doing it and all...I think they really need a new, young, skilled, educated, and "old soul" type of producer.
I seriously hope this is the LAST record they do with Eno/Lanois. They are overrated and I'm sure over paid. They did great work in the past but that's the past and I'd like to see new blood in the U2 veins.

Rick Rubin? Not what I mean.....stay doing that bullshit with the RHCP and collecting the dollars....

U2 needs someone young, hungry, and ISN'T LISTENING TO COLDPLAY OR THE KILLERS.........

I volunteer.......
