Well I think they're certainly comparable, they're about extended crime organizations in poor areas, and both go for a certain amount of realism.
And while Lance is right that City of God had more traditional plotting, but to me it just works better as art. I don't think the stylization comes off as poverty porn (which was a criticism leveled at Slumdog Millionaire), but it allows the film to transcend the subject matter, whereas Gomorra comes off more as just a document. An interesting one, but it just didn't stick with me as much.
