The evils of racism

I just want to get off my chest that although I proudly flaunt my southern heritage (my family were some of the first colonists to land in Virginia), I can only shake my head in shame and sadness at all the racism around me. I live in the capital of the Confederacy, so unfortunatly I see/hear racism virtually every day....both ways. Not only that, but my cousin is becoming a racist, taking to throwing the n-word around in such horrible contexts. I truly love the south and being a southerner, but there's still so much darkness to overcome.

Well I can tell you right off that -- your experiences notwithstanding -- there are people here who will dismiss your post and tell you that we've had so much progress here in the good ol' U-S of A that racism only exists in isolated incidences.

my favourite thing is when you live in a town where the schools go all out to prove there's no racism, and people like my sister will come home talking about how fucked up racism is, and then she'll be sitting around watching BET later and the "you're gonna learn chinese" video (i can't remember the guy's name. he's a rapper, and he's chinese) will come on and she and her friends will start talking about how much they hate "all those asian kids" at school. either that or they go off on the mock cape verdean accent. not to mention if one of my sister's friends likes a white guy in school, the rest of them go "eeew, but white guys are so pale and scrawny"...meanwhile, if i say something i get accused of being racist if i mention any of this at all.

progress is really a relative term, since the whole school is pretty much like that. not to mention the rest of the town, as well as some of the neighbouring towns.

After nearly four decades of laws to elimintate racism, all we have done is taught people how to comply with laws and keep hatred in their hearts.

As far as I'm concerned, until you see every person as God's creation and realize you have no place to hate what God has created, and you must love what God has created, racism will remain in some form.

racism and stereotypes come about for a reason

Maybe your cousin has good reasons for the feelings he/she has about those of another race. Racism and stereotypes come about for a reason, and usually these reasons are valid.

At yearend 2002 there were 3,437 sentenced black male prisoners per 100,000 black males in the United States, compared to 1,176 sentenced Hispanic male inmates per 100,000 Hispanic males and 450 white male inmates per 100,000 white males living in the United States. from US department of justice

?

It has a lot to do when you're a person walking through an inner-city at night. You have a few bad experiences with certain groups of people, and suddenly racist feelings will spur. Those prison numbers are reflective of who is doing what in society.

not necessarily. you're going to tell me that NONE of that has to do with racial profiling and generalizations from the past?

Is this from the "Fear those who look different from you" school of thought?

Horrors, a Ku Klux Klan camp next to your church camp?? There was a Ku Klux Klan gathering spot not far from where I grew up. I think I know where those Klan guys were gathering. NBcrusader, you're right, as long as we don't accept each other as God's children, we are going to have racism. It's bad news.

The cousin has racist feelings for a reason. The Department of Justice numbers don't lie, coloreds from that continent are abundant in prison, 3,437 sentenced black male prisoners per 100,000 black males living in America. Only 450 white male inmates per 100,000 white males living in the United States are in prison.

Also from the Department of Justice, blacks were disproportionately represented among homicide victims. In 1998, 4 whites, 23 blacks, and 3 persons of other races were murdered per 100,000 persons in each racial group.

If this cousin uses racism to refrain from certain groups of people, it will increase his/her odds of staying safe and staying alive. Even U2 engages in this practice, when they're on tour there are certain parts of America and certain parts of the world that they skip. In the last 20 years, U2 has done less than 5 concerts in Africa, and they've done over 120 concerts in America, and Africa is closer to Ireland than America is. There are just some places and people you have to avoid to keep safe in the world.

Yes and those reasons are ignorance and hatred. There is nothing valid about holding judgement on someone because they have a certain skin color, height, sex, clothes, etc.

First of all, do you have a source?

Secondly do these numbers take income, education, location in as factors? Do you not think there are other factors?

BonoVox, you "QUOTED" my source, my source being the Department of Justice

These stats take into effect who is in prison, what their race is, and how that compares to other races. With affirmative-action and bonus points being given to colored students applying for college such as the University of Michigan, if the coloreds don't want to get educated and progress, it's their own fault.

Are you aware that most black homicides are commited by other blacks? How are "we" protecting ourselves by avoiding "them?" Besides being blatantly racist, your theory makes absolutely no sense.

This has nothing to do with race. These are based on where their audience is, feasibilty, and money.

If you have any evidence it's based on race I'd like to see it.

Bono's American Wife, you are 100% correct. Most black homicides are commited against other blacks, the reason being because most blacks are in urban areas, and the whites have left all the urban areas. You don't see too many whites living in the ghetto or in the slums of Detroit, they've all used common sense and have left. So now when a black wants to kill someone, they are forced to kill another black, because all the whites are in the rural areas and better parts. Even when Bono got property in New York City, he didn't get property in the Bronx or Harlem, he got midtown Manhattan property, he knew where to stay away from.

If the thread has racial slurs or other derogatory comments it is subject to closing.

Mods, where are you?

LipstickBoy, I just don't understand why you have to come into every thread and make such hateful comments. Why did you even join this forum if that was your only intention? The rest of us have pretty diverse political opinions (Republicans, Democrats, liberals, conservatives, socialists, libertarians, etc) but we usually manage to at least be civil and avoid resorting to racism to make our arguments.

I am originally from Va and I can relate. I have family in Richmond and I have told them that if they continue to use the 'n' word in my presence, or to make rascist and homophobic comments using polite language for that matter, that I will stop visiting them. And I meant it. And it worked. I also have the habit of bringing any number of gay, black, Jewish, Hispanic friends home with me to dine at their table because I believe that rascism and homophobia is rooted in fear and when you put names and faces on it, people can change their minds. My mother has come a long way, baby!
