I just started a really great new job, and I was thumbing through my benefits information today. And I have to say, I'm really psyched to be working for a company that extends health and life insurance to domestic partners (it specifies same-sex OR opposite-sex domestic partners), as well as bereavement leave for the death of a domestic partner or a member of the domestic partner's family.

Very cool.

What does everyone think about this? Should companies extend benefits to domestic partners (same-sex or otherwise)? Does your workplace do it?

Discuss.

My company does this as well.

All marriages are essentially domestic partnerships. If a couple is willing to establish and recognize a domestic partnership, then I see no reason why it should be treated differently from a married couple.

yes, they should.

no idea if my workplace does, but given that it's a large media company with a significant amount of gay people in a major coastal city, i'm quite certain they do.
