Bono backs USA in Afghanistan

Per Irish Post---

Bono backs USA in Afghanistan
January 11, 2002

BONO has thrown his backing behind the conduct of the USA in the war in
Afghanistan.

The U2 frontman said: ³I donıt think historically, the way this
campaign has
been waged against terror, will be seen as anything other than a
success, in
terms of the least loss of human life and a certain measuredness, which
most
of the world were not expecting from the United States,² he told Hot
Press.

Bono ‹ who has criticised previous American administrations in the past
‹
remained unapologetic about his comments.

³Having bitten the arse of American policy in the first 10 years of my
life
in U2, I think you have to give them credit where it is due,² he added.

³Thereıs a lazy-mindedness about people sitting on the fence in this.
It is
actually not acceptable, especially people living across the road from
Sellafield.² Meanwhile U2 will pay tribute to the victims of the
September
11 terrorist attacks by playing at the Superbowl next month.

The superstars have confirmed that they will play two tracks at the
half-time interlude of the American football extravaganza which is
watched
by 10s of millions of people around the world.

Bono and the boys will introduce members from New Yorkıs Fire and
Police
departments to the crowd as they have done on previous concerts.

I think this already generated a five-page debate in Everything You Know Is Wrong (of all places).

"There's a wild thing in the woolshed
and it's keeping me awake at night
A devil in the closet
and a feeling I'd prefer to hide
He is religion
He won't hear me when I cry for help
He has a vision of me
but I am somebody else..."

The statement by Bono in that thread was a bit different in spirit. IIRC, Bono said something like "now that I have kids, I understand why people fight wars...if someone attacks your family, you don't just turn the other cheek."

Plenty of people will say (and have said) "Bono's totally selling out his beliefs to America." I hope that some others will say "hmm, you know, Bono's usually pretty reasonable. Maybe he has a point."

U2 must really be desperate to boost their sales in the US.

There is a quote that goes something like "Do I believe in a woman's right to choose? Absolutely."
