This thread goes along the lines of the one about "typical" U2 songs. Seeing as there are so many different eras and styles of U2, I would ask, what song off each respective album is representative of the direction the band is trying to go musically, and the bounderies they're trying to push on that record? For example, for AB, I would pick "The Fly" since it's most representative of the new "metatlic" and "darker" sound they're going for in the early 90's. Another one - for UF I would pick the title song since it captures the ambient, Eno induced sound the album is know for. Here are the rest:
Boy: A Day Without Me - coming of age lyrics representative of the album, "Boyish" type sound if there ever was one, and heavy use of Edges newly purchesed Echo pedel.
October: Gloria - sonically the album is not hugely different from the first IMO, but this captures the spiritual crises the band was in combined with the more "rushed" sound of an album that was recored following the theft of Bono's lyrics
War: SBS - need I say more?
UF: UF
JT: ISHFWLF
RH: Angel of Harlem - best captures bluesy, American influence, that the album is noted for
AB: The Fly
Zooropa: Lemon
Pop: Do you feel Loved - Easy choice- I see the sound on Pop as a cross between '80s U2 and '90s U2, combined with a heavy dance/techno influence and a patchwork production job with an unfinished sound. This song best defines that.
ATYCLB: Walk On- the sound of 4 guys playing in a room together, making simple organic sounding music without all the whistles and bells - albeit with a sound that's just a little too "safe" and "adult contemporary"
Ok folks- sorry about the length - I'd be interested to see what others have to say. And remember, it doesn't have to be the best, or biggest hit from that album - just the song that you think of when you think of the "sound" that that album is know for.
Bye!
