Come now, just reading some of the threads I've come across a good deal of Babyface bashing.

The song might not be the best from Zooropa, but it's a good, smooth little tune. Velvety bass, guitar effects, a soulful delivery from Bono...

Why so much hate for this song? Is it all because of the supposedly pedophiliac lyrics? Maybe Bono is really just obsessing over his own child. Bono does love babies afterall, seeing as how freedom has the scent of the top of a newborn baby's head:wink:

I would never say I hate the song, I'm just a bit indifferent to it, I can take it or leave it.

Do like that 'How could beauty be so kind to an ordinary guy' lyric though.

Pedophiliac lyrics? Hadn't heard that one before. And it's definately not about his own children.

The song is purely about obsessing over supermodels or porn stars or whatever through technology.

"Coming home late at night to turn you on
Checking out every frame
I got slow motion on my side" - obviously a reference to watching a videotape(this was early 90's) with remote in hand.

The line "let me unpack my case" later in the song a reference to box VHS tapes used to come in.

"You're coming to me from outterspace
How could beauty be so kind to an ordinary guy" - a reference to satellites beaming TV signals down.

This man obviously has become very detached, he things he knows these women, but all he really knows is the images.

Ok, I've definitely heard the porn/supermodel obsession theory more, and I'm not exactly sure how you'd interpret the song as pedophilia (though I've heard it somewhere).

No, it's not about Bono's children. But it would be funny.

It's definitely about obsessing over a celebrity or whatever via porn.

And I love it. I love Edge's guitar tone, and the lyrics are highly underrated. "Coming home late at night, to turn you on girl...checking out every frame, I've got slow motion on my side."

I always heard that as "to turn you over".

I think it's about obsessing about celebrity of the opposite sex via media. I always liked this quirky pop gem.

I love this song. It's one of my favorites from "Zooropa". I think the theme of our obsession with beauty, sex, and celebrity rings true even more now than it did then. After all, now we have 24 hour gossip sites, Youtube, even more celebrity-based "news" shows where we can keep tabs constantly of what famous people are doing. It really exposes the delusions of people who live with these false images. Also, if you don't think about what it's really about, it can actually be a very sexy song.:shifty: :reject:

It's utter crap. If U2 of 00's released this today it would be demolished by the vocal minority on here.

this is so true, and so pathetic

Yup! I've never thought about the song's meaning but it is indeed quite sexy. Great smooth vocals!

Babyface is an ok song , not one of the best from Zooropa.

But still miles better than Someday`s Are Better Than Others.
That song really is:madspit:

Cheers ,

not the best on Zooropa but certainly not out of place! love this song - not sure what I'd have thought if it never existed in the context of zooropa and turned up on Atomic Bomb or whatever but you know, still great
