In my paper we have to compare 3 things with a common theme- a song, a poem, and a piece of art. My poem is Passionate Shepherd to His Love by Christopher Marlowe. My picture is this by Helmut Newton.

So the picture can be interpreted in a lot of different ways. Either man can be the narrator of the poem. ANYWAY, I need a song! I guess my theme is love/ideal love/desire. I don't have a thesis yet but I need a song that goes with this theme and ties in somehow with the picture and the poem. It can be about someone leaving their lover to be with someone else, or someone finding their love, or going to be with their love, or anything!! I'm open to ALL suggestions!

Ryan Adams - "Magnolia Mountain"

I want to go to Magnolia Mountain
And lay my weary head down
Down on the rocks
On the mountain my savior made
Steady my soul and ease my worry
Hold me when I rattle like a hummingbird hummin'
Tie me to the rocks on the mountain my savior made

Lie to me
Sing me a song
Sing me a song until the morning comes
If the morning comes, will you lie to me
Will you take me to your bed
Will you lay me down
Till I'm heavy like the rocks on the riverbed
That my savior made

I want to be the bluebird singing
Singing to the roses in her yard
The roses in her yard her father grew for her
It's been raining that Tennessee honey
So long I got too heavy to fly
Ain't no bluebird ever gets too heavy to sing

Lie to me
Sing me a song
Sing me a song until the morning comes
And if the morning don't come, will you lie to me
Will you take me to your bed
Will you lay me down
Till I'm heavy like the rocks in the riverbed
That my savior made

We burned the cotton fields down in the valley
And ended up with nothing but scars
The scars became the lessons that we gave to our children after the war
But there ain't nothing but the truth up on the Magnolia Mountain
Where nobody ever dies
Steady your soul and ease your worry
They got a room for you

Lie to me like I lie to you
Calm me down until the morning comes
And if the morning don't come
Lie to me
Will you take me to your bed
Will you lay me down
All heavy like the rocks in the riverbed
That my savior made

I don't know the exacts of your assignment but couldn't the poem be the woman's response. The woman is calling for this man to desire her and live in the fairy tale. The man is the setting but the woman is the character of importance. The thread that connects the poem, the picture and the lyric below is the torment in the reality of love. In the poem, the man paints the picture of a beautiful around the woman. Which is basically, her fantasy. Even then, there is a sense of bleakness. A crack in the dream. In the picture he sees her before a lake lined by a lush forest. This is a continuation of that fantasy world but in the picture there is that sense of darkness. The dog is lifeless. If you look deeper into the photo you see a sharp, moody world.

The lyrics here, are for Kate Bush's Never Be Mine. Look at the lyrics as the woman coming to grips with this fantasy.

I look at you and see
My life that might have been:
Your face just ghostly in the smoke.
They’re setting fire to the cornfields
As you’re taking me home.
The smell of burning fields
Will now mean you and here.

This is where I want to be.
This is what I need.
This is where I want to be.
This is what I need.
This is where I want to be,
But I know that this will never be mine.

Ooh, the thrill and the hurting.
The thrill and the hurting.
I know that this will never be mine.

I want you as the dream,
Not the reality.
That clumsy goodbye-kiss could fool me,
But I’m looking back over my shoulder
At you, happy without me.

This is where I want to be.
This is what I need.
This is where I want to be.
This is what I need.
This is where I want to be,
But I know that this will never be mine.

Ooh, the thrill and the hurting
Will never be mine.
The thrill and the hurting,
It will never be mine.
It can never be.
The thrill and the hurting
Will never be mine.

Wow, I could almost write this paper for you!

But I won't.

Find the River - R.E.M.

Hey now, little speedyhead,
The read on the speedmeter says
You have to go to task in the city
Where people drown and people serve.
Dont be shy. your just deserve
Is only just light years to go.

Me, my thoughts are flower strewn
Ocean storm, bayberry moon.
I have got to leave to find my way.
Watch the road and memorize
This life that pass before my eyes.
Nothing is going my way.

The ocean is the rivers goal,
A need to leave the water knows
Were closer now than light years to go.

I have got to find the river,
Bergamot and vetiver
Run through my head and fall away.
Leave the road and memorize
This life that pass before my eyes.
Nothing is going my way.

Theres no one left to take the lead,
But I tell you and you can see
Were closer now than light years to go.
Pick up here and chase the ride.
The river empties to the tide.
Fall into the ocean.

The river to the ocean goes,
A fortune for the undertow.
None of this is going my way.
There is nothing left to throw
Of ginger, lemon, indigo,
Coriander stem and rose of hay.
Strength and courage overrides
The privileged and weary eyes
Of river poet search naivete.
Pick up here and chase the ride.
The river empties to the tide.
All of this is coming your way
