U2's Vertigo Leads Year's Top Tours

By Jonathan Cohen

U2's Vertigo tour was the top-grossing trek of 2005, according to year-end figures from Billboard Boxscore that will be published in the Dec. 24 issue of magazine, which hits newsstands Friday (Dec. 16). Vertigo reported grosses of $260 million and drew more than 3 million people to 90 concerts, all of which were sell-outs.

In addition, U2's June 24-27 run at Dublin's Croke Park was named Boxscore of the year, grossing more than $21.1 million and drawing nearly 247,000 fans.

Coming in second to U2 this year were the Eagles, who grossed $117 million from 77 shows, followed by Neil Diamond, who raked in more than $71 million. Country star Kenny Chesney placed fourth with a gross of $63 million; his attendance draw of 1.1 million was second only to U2.

The top 10 touring grosses are rounded out by Paul McCartney ($60 million), Rod Stewart ($49 million), Elton John ($45.5 million touring, plus another $30 million via his Las Vegas show "The Red Piano"), Dave Matthews Band ($45 million), Jimmy Buffett ($41 million) and Green Day ($36.5 million).

Billboard Boxscore does not reflect a year-to-date gross for the Rolling Stones' ongoing On Stage tour. Traditionally, the group's promoter does not submit box-office information to Billboard until after the tour is complete.

The year's top-grossing arena was New York's Madison Square Garden, a distinction it has earned for six straight years. Mansfield, Mass.' Tweeter Center was the top-grossing amphitheater for the third year in a row.

In 2005, North American concerts grossed just over $2 billion, down 6.2% from 2004, according to Billboard Boxscore. Attendance was down 3.8% to 45.7 million.

Interesting info... but that doesn´t mean QUALITY concerts at all. And it´s clear that Vertigo would be the Top seller Tour of this year... with those highest-priced tickets of the year:ohmy:

U2's ticket prices are lower than many on that list - and some that aren't, like the Stones.

And I'm not sure what you mean by "quality". If this is a dig at U2 (as you are prone to do), then I guess you disagree with the other 3 million people that saw the shows and made all 90 concerts a sell-out.

Demand was so high for this tour that if U2 were looking to rip-off their fans - they could have charged double these prices and still had sell-outs ... their ticket prices are less than acts that are similar to them in popularity and the cost to put on their high tech show is much higher - and as far as quality is concerned - if they have ever gone on stage and just mailed it in - I haven't seen it in print ... must be why they just sold-out Australia/New Zealand -440,000 seats- in record time ....

The Billboard Year end chart cut off was a few weeks ago and does not include 10 more shows reported to Boxscore as well as another 10 shows U2 has yet to play in 2005. After 100 shows, this is the total result of the tour below. Total GROSS is now up to $278 million and will be close to $300 million by the time of the December 19 Portland show!

I concur completely doctorwho .... what other band charges the least for the closest seats ? Demand was so high for this tour that if U2 were looking to rip-off their fans - they could have charged double these prices and still had sell-outs ... their ticket prices are less than acts that are similar to them in popularity and the cost to put on their high tech show is much higher - and as far as quality is concerned - if they have ever gone on stage and just mailed it in - I haven't seen it in print ... must be why they just sold-out Australia/New Zealand -440,000 seats- in record time ....

Average ticket price for the Vertigo Tour in North America is about $97 dollars and the average price in Europe is almost $80 dollars. Its not as much as the Rolling Stones but its more than most other artist and I don't think there is anything wrong with that. If your not willing to make what your worth, then the scalpers will.

The tour results show that the bands popularity is simply unparalleled in the industry.

One thing U2 should for the General Admission tickets of which there are only 2,000 per arena show is require that the tickets can only be picked up the day of the show through will call and require ID and Credit Card to pick up the tickets. This will prevent scalpers from making a 250% profit from the resale of these tickets.

Its funny to see Green Day's GROSS for their American Idiot Tour at $36.5 million. By the time the Vertigo Tour finishes in April of 2006, the total GROSS will be over $400 million dollars, about 11 times that of Green Day's GROSS.

Sting2, what is the highest grossing tour of all time? Will the projected $400 million gross put U2 at #1? As well, any guesses as to where the current Rolling Stones tour would place on that list, if they had reported their figures?

The Highest Grossing Tour of All time is the Bridges To Babylon/No Security Tour which Grossed 357 million dollars back in 1997/1998/1999. Because many consider No Security Tour to be a seperate tour, many believe the highest grossing tour of all time is the Voodoo Lounge 1994-1995 tour at $319 million dollars.

The $400 million dollar Gross by the Vertigo tour will put it at #1 as the highest Grossing tour of all time when the tour ends in Mid-April 2006.

The current Rolling Stones tour has only played 45 shows so far and I guess it has Grossed around $170 million dollars based on some alleged figures I have seen.

U2 will have the number 1 tour of all time for about 4 months in 2006. By the end of August or perhaps the end of 2006, it is likely although definitely not certain, that the Rolling Stones will have grossed any where from $500 million to $600 million dollars. They have seen what U2 has achieved in terms of Gross and will do what is necessary in terms of numbers of concerts and ticket prices in order to top it.

But, if U2 had elected to continue the Vertigo Tour in the Summer of 2006 with more Stadium shows in Europe as well as North America, I have serious doubts that the Stones would be able to top the Vertigo tour. U2 will be ending their Vertigo tour without having satisfied all the demand there is to see them around the world. The slow sales of several Rolling Stones shows show that they are indeed meeting demand and would be unable to continue to add shows in many places.

Thanks!
Are the numbers for the Voodoo Lounge tour in any way adjusted for current dollar value, or are those 10 year old values?
Also, what are the current RS ticket prices, compared to U2 prices?

By the way, does anyone know why the Stones do not post their ongoing tour results, but only report them at the end of the tour?

The totals for the Stones tours are not adjusted for inflation. If they were, Voodoo Lounge in 2005 dollars GROSS would be $407 million dollars. Bridges To Babylon/No Security tour would be $420 million dollars, if you include No Security totals with the Bridges To Babylon totals.

Remember the Vertigo Tour is ending early in the sense that there is demand for another tour of 30 or more stadiums in Europe and perhaps several dozen more arena or stadium shows in North America. The band once to take a break though and start working on the next album. The band booked an arena tour in the United States which in retrospect was a mistake. A Stadium tour would have been a better way to meet demand and would have allowed for more shows in Europe in 2005.

As far as ticket prices go, Rolling Stones tickets in North America are any where from $60 dollars a ticket up to $454 dollars a ticket. U2's ticket prices in North America range from $49.50 up to $170 dollars.

Ticket prices for Stones shows in other parts of the world are still being set, in the United Kingdom they range from 40 British pounds up to 150 British pounds. The average price for U2 tickets in the United Kingdom in 2005 was around 70 British pounds.

Contrary to what was said in the article, the Rolling Stones always posted their tour results like everyone else until the 2002-2003 Licks Tour. For some reason Michael Cohl decided not to post them. Many shows on that tour had trouble selling. When the final results were released, it was discovered that nearly half the shows did not sellout. The Rolling Stones Grossed $300 million dollars on the Licks Tour from 116 shows.

This time around, their ticket prices for most shows on average are much higher and their actually selling much better. Michael Cohl did an excelant job in the USA schedualing the tour, playing several places the Stones either had never played before or had not played in 40 years for several of the Stadium shows, which brought in a lot of money. Many arena shows did not sell seats behind the stage, reducing the number of people per show, but vastly increasing the average ticket price for the remaining seats. Some reports suggest the average ticket price in Philadelphia at their two arena shows there was as much as $200 dollars, nearly double of what it was 3 years ago. Each show played to 15,000 people instead of the 19,000+ people that would be present if seats behind the stage were sold.

But once again, by not reporting the results for the tour, Michael Cohl hides any bad results the band may be getting and avoids year end comparisons with other artist, namely U2 who would rank far ahead of the Stones for 2005 results, although the Stones tour has just started.

Several of the British shows appear to be selling slowly and so it is uncertain how the final results will turn out there. So, I guess Michael Cohl prefers to report a nice big number at the end of the tour instead having to deal with all the scrutiny and comments that would come from posting weekly results, good or bad. It insures that only one comparison with U2 will be made and that will occur when the Stones tour is finished and he has insured that the tour was able to top the GROSS figure from U2's Vertigo tour which from a business standpoint is finishing early without fully satisfying demand and achieving the maximum GROSS figure it could have done.

Why are the Stones so massive?
one of the reasons is because its just a tradition so see the Stones live, but really there are a lot of people(young) attending their shows that dont really know much of their music, exept maybe heard 'Satisfaction' or 'Start me Up' ......i met some people who just went to see them, and they knew a sh,...about them... But it was a 'cool thing; you know? its just like they are an act from the 60's who were big and are still touring, and their spectacle is great! thats for sure, but i really doubt that those 500 million can come from truly fans, as could be the case of U2

if the stones had submitted their information, u2 would be #2 on thist list i would think.

Actually they wouldn't be because the Stones have only played 45 shows in 2005, while for purposes of the list which goes up to mid November, U2 has played 90 shows(they will have played 110 by the end of the year). The Stones GROSS over those 45 shows is not more than $170 million dollars and likely less. U2's GROSS for their first 90 shows is $260 million dollars and will be nearly $300 million dollars by the time the Vertigo Tour plays its last show in Portland on December 19, 2005.

The Vertigo Tour will be the first tour ever in history to top the $400 million dollar mark when the last shows are played in mid-April 2006.

The Stones have been the #1 touring artist since 1975, but now it appears that U2 are starting to edge them out of the top spot. When it comes to album sales, the Rolling Stones "A Bigger Bang" is turning out to be their worst selling studio album of the past 30 years. While retailers in the United States purchased enough of the album for it to be certified platinum, only 390,000 copies have been sold at retail according to Soundscan. Retailers in the USA should have ordered about half of what they did.

HOLY CRAP PEOPLE----TAKE ANOTHER LOOK SEE AT THIS! WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW. WOW! AMAZING!

The Vertigo Tour will be the first tour ever in history to top the $400 million dollar mark when the last shows are played in mid-April 2006.

do you have real numbers for the stones?

yes they've played fewer shows, but they've played more stadium dates for almost twice the cost per-ticket as u2, if not more than twice as much.

The Stones have only played 20 Stadium shows, and 25 Arena shows. U2 have played 32 Stadium shows and 58 Arena shows by mid November. The Rolling Stones would of had to have Grossed an average of 6 million dollars per show in order to be ahead of U2 for the year at the mid November mark. For the year to the end of December, their average GROSS per show would have to be 7 million dollars to top U2 for 2005.

The official figures have not been made public, but SOLDATTI often gets figures for various things and would not disclose how he got the below figures for the Stones, so I don't know if their official or not, but here they are for few shows:

date: 10/10/05
Wachovia Center, Philadelphia
total tickets sold: 15,340 (SOLD OUT)
total gross: $2,918,000.00

date: 10/12/05
Wachovia Center, Philadelphia
total tickets sold: 15,340 (SOLD OUT)
total gross: $2,918,000.00

date: 11/1/05 with Motley Crue
Rose Garden Arena, Portland
total tickets sold: 15,074 (SOLD OUT)
total gross: $2,390,500.00

date: 11/13/05 with Metallica
SBC Park, San Francisco
total tickets sold: 40,492 (SOLD OUT)
total gross: $5,791,444.00

date: 11/15/05 with Metallica
SBC Park, San Francisco
total tickets sold: 40,492 (SOLD OUT)
total gross: $5,791,444.00

If the above figures are correct, it appears that none of the Rolling Stones stadium dates grossed more than 6 million, and it appears most arena shows were below 3 million. Based on that the maximum Rolling Stone Gross for 2005 would be $195 million dollars for 25 Arena shows and 20 stadium shows.

If the above figures are correct, one can see that the Stones are not attempting to sell seats behind the stage for their Arena shows. Average ticket price for the Philly shows was a whopping $190 dollars, Portland $158 dollars, and the San Francisco show, with Metallica as the opener:eyebrow:, $143 dollars. Despite having Metallica, who's hometown is the Bay Area in support, the two SBC shows were reduced capacity shows.

The Rolling Stones will be playing 55+ shows in 2006 which will add significantly to the Stones total GROSS. The Stones are going to do what ever it takes to top the Vertigo Tour which will become the highest grossing tour ever in history when it finishes in April. With the Vertigo Tour hitting $400 million dollars in GROSS by the time it finishes in Mid-April the Stones are likely trying to get a GROSS of $500 million to $600 million in order to top the Vertigo Tour. U2 had the option of touring through the summer of 2006 and could have added another $200 million dollars to their GROSS, but the tour is now schedualed to end in April as the Edge says the band wants a break and then wants to get on with recording the next album.

record another album... haha... that's funny

Why is that funny? That is what the Edge said. The tour promoters have been pushing them to keep going, but their not going to. While the band took a long time to record HTDAAB, they take the writing and recording of albums just as seriously as playing live.
