Where the Hell is the Outrage?
Quote:
I have been wondering why Americans aren't protesting just like the Europeans, Turks, Arabs and Brazilians. We have every right to, and yet we're not. I used to think it was because we're afraid of sparking the second Civil War because of the political tension in this country. I've talked about this with friends, and we always jokingly wonder if the next Civil War is coming soon. But I think it is something more simple: we've gotten fat, lazy and stupid. We'd rather believe conspiracy theories than get into reality. I also think it's because after decades of being taught that to criticize America in any way is unpatriotic and even communist, has made many Americans unable to question our government, politics and economic system. Fear has kept our mouths shut and brains dead. The Tea Party started out with reasonable intentions until it was hijacked by the conservatives. Occupy Wall Street had a point until the anarchists took over and defined the movement as nothing but rude and obnoxious kids looking to create chaos. I have a bleak outlook for my country. |

Until you can condense the article down to a tweet, most Americans will tune out. Also, Americans need something with a much clearer injustice, a quick timeline and a very low barrier to participation (a la Kony 2012)

Americans aren't the only ones who use social media. In fact, the Arab Spring was fueled by Twitter and Facebook. So I wouldn't knock social media as something that only caters to dense, shallow people.

Like nbc I haven't really had a chance to read the full article.
But generally, I would say that the Americans bought into the notion of the "American dream" some decades ago and have not yet let go of it. To an extent, this was true for a number of years - I say to an extent, because the American dream was not attainable for many minority groups for a long time, but for your typical WASP family, it could become a reality. By contrast, Europeans and other people ruled by European colonial powers (unlike the US who had a revolutionary war) were raised understanding very well that meritocracy is a nice word to toss around, but aristocracy is how things really get done. Even in the former Communist countries of the Soviet bloc, you had a form of party aristocracy - yes, everyone was "equal" unless you were a party leader, then you were more equal than others. There is therefore an innate suspicion of the upper and ruling classes which basically subjugated those below them for hundreds of years while getting away like bandits. In America, people behave against their own self interest to continue to prop up this upper class (which by the way wants nothing to do with them and considers them to be hicks by and large). You will see it constantly, people demanding tax cuts for the wealthy, offended at any kind of a suggestion that the wealthy should pay more and so on. Likely because the American dream is alive for them (or they think it is) and they have deluded themselves into believing that they, too, someday might get rich. The reality is something that is far different. |

(defining anarchists as 'rude and obnoxious kids' is pretty clichéd, too) |

The vast majority of Americans feel indifferent about social, political or economic problems at a greater scope. Indifference divides those who actually care and those who don't.
You can't expect people to protest about things that don't affect them. |

whoever it was, it was good practice for them because it is only a matter of time until they will be just regular homeless people living in the street
