"One man washed on an empty beach" -- Possibly a reference to Jonah 2:10: "Then the LORD ordered the fish to spit up Jonah on the beach, and it did." (Thanks to Brian)

Yeah, I think what Bono was doing is stating all the things that were done in the world "in the name of love", that's the reason for the "WHAT MORE in the name of love?" and, in that line of thought, kinda comparing Martin Luther King Jr wioth Jesus or, rather than comparing, stating him as a close follower of his teachings to humans on Earth.
