the video is terribly clever, original. i'd like to hear ( ahem, read) anyone's interpretation of it.

I always saw this song as "hymn" to the falsity of the society... Specially when it comes to Christmas: "Then they put Jesus in show business"

The first lines seem to be different. I read somewhere that they are about a woman who was beaten by her husband, and it makes sense.

I can see a litlle loss of inocence too: "And the Cartoon Network turns into the news"

And a prayer: "So where is the hope
And where is the faith
And the love"

I think the video is very original. The band sitting in a place with people passing by. It's almost automatic the way they act, following the dayly routine and forgetting the most important things.

Well, but that's just what I think...

I'm rather fond of this video. Partially because I'm a science geek (like The Edge!) and I'm always trying to figure out how things work. From watching the video the first few times, I figured out exactly how the video was filmed.
All in one take, with two cameras on the table, side by side, attached to one another. I also figured out that the song was played really slowed down, and Bono had to mime to this dragged out version, to shoot the video (so that when it was sped up, his lips would be in sync with the normal speed of the song).
I was very excited when I watched the director's commentary and everything I had figured out was confirmed.

Anyway, Bono's there in the booth, singing (slowly) and everyone keeps coming and going, going about their business, completely oblivious to him and his song.
It's almost as if he's singing this song, to convey this message to the people. But they don't even know he's there/don't care. In that sense, it's somewhat like the video for Please.
A theme in the song seems to be how Christmas has gone from being about the birth of Christ, to all about commercialism. This too fits with the video. Jesus is at the center of the holiday, yet he's mostly forgotten in our celebrations. Bono is at the center of all of the action in this video, and yet he's ignored.

I see IGWSHA as a continuation of Stay - it's a similar theme, kind of a conversation between Bono and a woman about vicimization - the woman seems to be in a situation she cannot tolerate or manage ("a vampire or a victim, it depends on who's around, "no one else here baby, no one here to blame").

The videos on the other hand, I always interpreted Bono to be a ghost, because no one sees him or acknowledges him, but yet there's a space for him at the table everytime in IGWSHA...Bono acts like a ghost in Stay since he is also flying around, visiting the 'other band', yet no one sees him but you can tell that they do feel him...it adds a very spiritual underpinning to the song since he is trying to shake whoever is there (the woman in Stay, the people in the booth) to wake up and feel/acknowledge what's around them.

Well, my interpretation at least...
