Which artists would you select to cover each of the songs on Achtung Baby?

Here's mine:

Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses - The Police
So Cruel - Paul McCartney
The Fly - Muse

Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World - REM
Ultraviolet (Light My Way) - Live
Acrobat - Oasis
Love Is Blindness - ColdPlay

This limits the pool somewhat, but what about an album of covers by all Irish artists? I'm not even a fan of some of these acts but I think this would be an interesting concept:

1. Zoo Station-Virgin Prunes
2. Even Better Than the Real Thing-Iarla O'Lionaird
3. One-Duke Special
4. Until the End of the World-Snow Patrol
5. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses-The Frames
6. So Cruel-The Pogues
7. The Fly-My Bloody Valentine
8. Mysterious Ways-The Corrs
9. Tryin' to Throw Your Arms Around the World-Damien Dempsey
10. Ultraviolet (Light My Way)-Paul Brady
11. Acrobat-The Cranberries
12. Love is Blindness-Sinead O'Connor

Again, I'm going with both living and deceased artists because, hell, this is fantasy, isn't it?

Zoo Station - Muse
Even Better Than The Real Thing - Metric
One - Jeff Buckley
Until The End of the World - The Horrors
Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses - Slowdive
So Cruel - Red House Painters
The Fly - Jimi Hendrix Experience
Mysterious Ways - Prince
Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World - Whiskeytown
Ultraviolet - Broken Social Scene
Acrobat - TV On The Radio
Love Is Blindness - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Zoo Station - The Zutons; Even Better...- Arctic Monkeys; One - The Beatles (ha!); Until The End...- Nirvana; Who's Gonna Ride...- Florence and the Machine; So Cruel - Massive Attack; The Fly - Muse; Mysterious Ways - The Killers; Tryin...- Eels; UV - REM; Acrobat - My Chemical Romance; LIB - Radiohead.

Zoo Station: The Black Keys
Even Better Than The Real Thing: Sleigh Bells
One: Elbow
Until The End Of The World: My Morning Jacket
Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses: Fleet Foxes
So Cruel: Coldplay
The Fly: The Arctic Monkeys
Mysterious Ways: The Flaming Lips
Trying To Throw Your Arms Around The World: The Raveonettes
Ultraviolet: Animal Collective
Acrobat: Sunny Day Real Estate
Love Is Blindness: Ours

Zoo Station - Thom Yorke
Even Better Than The Real Thing - Them Crooked Vultures/Queens of the Stone Age
One - Sinead O'Connor (In the style of I'm Not Your Baby)
Until The End of the World - REM
Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses - Florence and the Machine
So Cruel - The xx
The Fly - This one has me stuck, on one hand it could be Alice in Chains, on another it could be Radiohead, both would come out with something different and excellent IMHO
Mysterious Ways - Cee Lo Green
Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World - Bon Iver
Ultraviolet (Light My Way) - Eddie Vedder
Acrobat - Pearl Jam
Love Is Blindness - Soundgarden

This was a lot harder and more interesting than I thought! Florence would also be perfect for EBTTRT I thought, but the melodramatic sound of Wild Horses pushes it for her :D

Here's mine

Zoostation - Daft Punk
EBTTRT - Yeasayer
ONE - Glen Hansard
UTEOTW - The Joy Formidable
WGRYWH - Phoenix
So Cruel - LCD Soundsystem
The Fly - Nine Inch Nails
Mysterious Ways - Passion Pit
Trying to throw your arms around the world - Ben Gibbard
Ultraviolet - Grizzly Bear
Acrobat - Noel Gallagher
Love is Blindness - Feist

1. Zoo Station - Oasis - although not technically together, I'd love to hear their "Beatle-esque" take on this song.

2. Even Better Than the Real Thing - Franz Ferdinand - the electric pop style of this song is perfect for this group.

3. One- REM - Stipe proved he has the vocal stylings perfect for this song when he performed it as part of Automatic Baby. REM would do a great job.

4. Until the End of the World - Pearl Jam (or Eddie Vedder) - a great rocking track that Vedder would make soar with that deep voice.

5. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses - Radiohead - Yorke has a great voice, when he actually showcases it. Radiohead would do a great job with the few power notes while still providing the necessary melancholy to the song.

6. So Cruel- Snow Patrol - they perform these aching songs so beautifully.

7. The Fly - RHCP - the funky groove on this song would be even more wild with the Chili Peppers.

8. Mysterious Ways - Rolling Stones - an unusual choice, I admit, but I'd love to see Mick Jagger strut and serenade the belly dancer while singing this.

9. Tryin' to Throw Your Arms Around the World - Gavin Friday - Bono was probably out with Friday when he came up with the opening lyrics. :) Friday's take would be very interesting.

10. Ultraviolet (Light My Way) - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (BRMC) - another great rocking track that this group would nail

11. Acrobat -J ulian Lennon - this song screams early solo Lennon to me. Since John is no longer with us, Julian would do a great job.

12. Love is Blindness - Cassandra Wilson - She already did a beautiful cover on "New Moon Daughter".

Going a different direction:

Zoo Station: Little Boots
Even Better Than The Real Thing: Justice (ft. Rhianna)
One: Gnarls Barkley
Until The End Of The World: Bassnectar (ft. Panda Bear)
Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses: James Blake (ft. Wayne Coyne)
So Cruel: Skrillex (ft. Benny Benassi)
The Fly: Lady Gaga
Mysterious Ways: Kanye West (ft. Nicki Minaj)
Trying To Throw Your Arms Around The World: Passion Pit
Ultraviolet: Cut Copy
Acrobat: Caspa (ft. Jay-Z and Beyonce)
Love Is Blindness: Nero (ft. La Roux)

Using only active artists for my list.

Until the End of the World: Them Crooked Vultures or The Dead Weather
Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses: Arcade Fire
So Cruel: Bat for Lashes
The Fly: Muse
Mysterious Ways: Beck
Tryin' to Throw Your Arms Around the World: Coldplay
Ultraviolet (Light My Way): St. Vincent
Acrobat: Radiohead
Love is Blindness: The National

I thought he was just no longer touring. Damn, I didn't know that was it for albums too. Terrible to hear. I'll edit it to another funky artist, Beck.

I'm hearing that Depeche Mode is doing So Cruel as their cover contribution. Should be interesting!

Depeche Mode were recently approached by the U2 camp to contribute a track to an upcoming U2 covers collection, supposedly accompanying a re-issue of “Achtung Baby”. And so it was that Depeche Mode ended up recorded their version of U2′s “So Cruel”. The track, recorded in Santa Barbara and New York is produced by Depeche Mode’s very own Martin Gore, with lead vocals by Dave Gahan. Sie Medway Smith was on hand with engineering and mixing.

and now for something completely different...

Zoo Station - Fatboy Slim featuring Ozzy Osbourne

Until The End of the World - Extreme
Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses - Reba McEntire

Ultraviolet (Light My Way) - Willie Nelson
Acrobat - Edwyn Collins

I wonder if this will be the U2.com fan gift this year...

hahaha i wouldn't be surprised

i can't really think of any bands for a whole list but Oasis covering Acrobat with Noel on lead vocals would be sweet.

Bono let the cat out of the bag...

It's Q magazine that comissioned it...

Jack White - LIB
DM - So Cruel
Damien Rice - One
Patti Smith - Until the End of the World?

Sounds awesome. Assuming it will come with whatever month's edition of Q. Will have to buy that one.
