U2 announces Melbourne charity gig

By 7News

Music supergroup U2 is planning to mix pleasure with politics on its November tour of Australia. . The band was said to be planning a Live 8-style concert to coincide with a meeting of world economic leaders in Melbourne.

The third concert would be aimed at sending a message to 20 of the world's finance ministers, who will be in Australia for the G20 economic summit.

Like the Live 8 concert in London last year, the U2 gig will support the Make Poverty History campaign, a cause close to the heart of singer Bono.

The event would be Australia's largest ever charity concert.

U2's Australian promoter Michael Coppel was unavailable for comment today, but it seemed a date was already set.

The band has a booking with Telstra Dome for November 21, just days after its already sold-out Melbourne concerts.

OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY I HOPE THIS IS TRUE!!!!

Where on 7 news did you find that? The booking for the 21st could just be a contingency for a third concert or if for some reason the of the other 2 concerts can't be held.
Plus why lobby the G20?!

Sucks for me if its true because I'm going to the Nov 19 concert at the dome and then fly out to Tassie the next day for a holiday!

And BRissie misses out AGAIN!

Do you mean misses out on a second concert?

I'm from Brissy and was going to Nov 7 but that'll be smack bang in the middle of my final semester final year uni exams so I'm hot footing it back to my hometown of melbourne!

Ok, well I just saw it on a Seven News break!
Not finding it on any of the other new services online though...

From today's Herald Sun:

U2 may play free

U2 may play in a free concert coinciding with November's G20 economic summit in Melbourne.
A concert has been booked for November 17 at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, modelled on last year's Live8 Concert in London. As with Live8, the free concert would raise awareness of the Make Poverty History campaign.
U2 lead singer Bono has supported the campaign in the past. A music industry insider says U2 scheduled the return to Melbourne around the G20 summit and has kept the night of November 17 free.
The band will play at sold-out shows at Telstra Dome on November 18 and 19. If they do play free, the gig may have to be moved to a bigger venue.

Hi everyone.

This is "old news" now, but this is an article from Channel 7 news re the possible extra Melbourne show:

Interestingly it says that Telstra Dome has actually been booked for the 21st November. I have a contact there who I may be able to ask this weekend, so I will let you know if there's any news!

From todays (Aug 5) The Age (Melbourne)

"Australia is experiencing a concert boom, with music fans young and old snapping up tickets to both nostalgia acts and buzz bands.
A huge line-up of marquee acts, including U2, Kylie Minogue and Robbie Williams, will come our way later this year, which combined with a huge Make Poverty History concert at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl... U2, which rescheduled its Australian tour to coincide with the G20 economic summit in Melbourne, is on the wish list for the charity concert, which is being organised by the Australian branch of Make Poverty History for November 17"

http://www.theage.com.au/news/music...4198334325.html

And from MPH Australia website:
"This makes the Melbourne meeting of the G20 on November 18 and 19 even more important. As a build up, there'll be actions for students, a global attempt on the Guinness Book of Records and a massive concert on November 17"

Interesting!
