A12. Journey - Rose Bowl; Pasadena, Calif. (July 2, 1982)
Attendance: 83,214
Gross: $1,373,031

Festival show with Blue Oyster Cult, Triumph, Aldo Nova

33. Foreigner - Anaheim Stadium; Anaheim, Calif. (July 17, 1982)
Attendance: 73,351
Gross: $1,100,255

"Summer Stomp" with Foreigner, Loverboy, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Girlschool.

I have a hard time imaging that many people squeezed into that stadium (it's a smaller one)

Rolling Stones - LA Memorial Coliseum; Los Angeles, Calif (October 9-10, 1981)
Attendance: ?
Gross: ?

"Nearly 90,000" on Oct 9 according to the LA Times.

Mellow Mood at Coliseum

Had to be at least that on Oct 11 considering it was a Sunday and these were daytime shows.

The Police - JFK Stadium; Philadelphia, PA (August 20, 1983)
Attendance: ?
Gross: ?

45,000 according to the Police concert archive.

The Police - Hollywood Park; Hollywood, Calif (September 5, 1983)
Attendance: ?
Gross: ?

75,000 according to the Police concert archive or 80,000 according to Sting from the stage.

Rolling Stones shows at Municipal Stadium, Rich Stadium and JFK Stadium in 1978 also likely drew 75,000 or more.

Why are you guys fighting over boxscores? :|

They're not even fighting over boxscores, it's even sillier than that. I can understand discussing other acts boxscores and comparing them to U2 statistics, but this latest discussion which has now gone on for pages is so far off topic that it might get this thread closed even before the next boxscores are announced tomorrow.

Festival show with Blue Oyster Cult, Triumph, Aldo Nova

Definitely apart of the Escape Tour. In fact I think it was the last show of that tour. The opening acts are too weak sales wise relative to Journey for it to be considered a festival, and there is no name given either.

"Summer Stomp" with Foreigner, Loverboy, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Girlschool.

Although it may have been technically named as a festival, I think its really more of a Foreigner show with a strong opening act. Without Loverboy on the bill, there is no way it could be considered a festival. Its debatable, but since Foreigner was doing stadiums all over the USA that summer, I'm going to leave it where it is.

I have a hard time imaging that many people squeezed into that stadium (it's a smaller one)

The stadium may have been larger back then. There are multiple boxscores in Billboard of stadium shows or festivals at Anaheim stadium with 60,000 or 70,000 people. David Bowie played there in 1983 to just a little over 70,000 people although the show was not a sellout.

"Nearly 90,000" on Oct 9 according to the LA Times.

I'm aware of the media and website reports for these shows, but I'm looking for the real boxoffice numbers.

Definitely, and as soon as I see those boxscores I'll add them.

I will post the new boxscores tomorrow when they come up. Just giving you all a heads up! Just wondering, I check out pollstar sometimes, but I can't find boxscores on there. Where do I look? I just wanted to compare them to Billboard.

Again, you are looking at the wrong numbers and it's obvious you are fairly clueless to the nature of the music scene at the time.

Blue Oyster Cult and Triumph were huge in the early 1980's, especially in LA. "Burnin' For You" was all over the radio. It was their last hurrah but they were pretty big from 1975 to 1982 with 1983/1984 being their last arena tour. Triumph's "Magic Power" and "Fight The Good Fight" were also FM staples at the time and they were headlining arenas, at least in So Cal at the time. So that's 2 arena headliners opening for a band that might or might not have been able to fill a stadium on their own.

Loverboy was an arena headliner at the time as were the Scorpions. I don't think Foreigner could have played a stadium without them. These were bands that got constant play on KLOS & KMET. Probably the combined drawing power of 3 bands that were huge on LA radio is what put this show in a stadium. Iron Maiden was also breaking at the time and were headlining arenas the next year but LA radio was somewhat hostile to the heavier metal bands. Foreigner kept having hits until 1988 but rarely played any stadium dates after that. They might have done a few in 1985 with Aerosmith and REO Speedwagon.

Pollstar figures are only shown to subscribers online or in a print magazine which runs about $200USD a year.

I looked at the specific individual boxscores for Scorpions and Loverboy in the months before the show and after and I have to say I think your right. I did not realize the Scorpions were already that big in terms of concert drawing strength. They actually did their shows with Iron Maiden and GirlSchool opening for them, the same bands on the line up for the Stadium show. Loverboy appears to be strong as well and may have been able to fill or sellout two arena shows in an area like LA.

Most of the Foreigner Stadium shows in 1982 were played with this same line up of Loverboy, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Girlschool. They were also at festivals that were named in the boxscore. For some reason Boxscore did not list the name Summer Stomp for the Anaheim show. I think that if it had just been Foreigner and Girlschool the attendance would have been about half of the 73,000 figure. So this is definitely a show that belongs in the festival list.

With the Journey show at the Rose Bowl, I can't agree. While Blue Oyster Cult did play some arena shows in 1981, they were primarily co-headlinging with Foghat.

But in california they did play without Foghat, and these were the results for the LA area in 1981:

Blue Oyster Cult / Pat Travers / Johnny Van Zandt
Los Angeles Sports Arena; Los Angeles, California (July 26, 1981)
Attendance: 7,934 (capacity: 15,000)
Gross: $77,275
Shows: 1
Sellouts: 0

Blue Oyster Cult / Pat Travers / Johnny Van Zandt
Swing Auditorium; San Bernadino, California (July 23, 1981)
Attendance: 3,869
Gross: $36,356
Shows: 1
Sellouts: 0

There were only a few boxscore results for Triumph, most of them low on each weeks list. Most were in the Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, western Pennsylvania area. The closest one to the LA area in 1981(there no individual boxscores in 1982) was in Oakland California. with 6,400 in attendance.

Triumph / Kix
Auditorium; Oakland, California (October 24, 1981)
Attendance: 6,400
Gross: $60,548
Shows: 1
Sellouts: 1

This particular show just barely made Billboard Boxscores list that week being at the bottom of a list of 40 shows for that week.

So, I think this information reinforces the fact that the Journey Rose Bowl show was in fact a Journey show and not a Festival. Probably well over 75% of the crowd was there for Journey.

Whatever. Who knows why those shows didn't sell too well. It's quite possible they killed their draw by overtouring. Also Burnin' For You wasn't released as a single until August. Obviously they were considered enough of a draw for Bill Graham to stick them 2nd on the bill at the Rose Bowl.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burnin'_for_You

1) Burnin' For You was a massive hit on LA FM radio in 1981/1982. They headlined arena shows (sometimes multiple times) in LA every year from at least 1976 - 1981 and again in 1983. They were an arena level act until 1984. They sometimes had mid-level festival slots during that time period, usually playing 70-80 mins. Their first time touring as a regular opening act (45 min slot etc) was in 1986 when they opened for KISS, Rush and Ozzy.

Since I am pretty sure the Rose Bowl was a BGP show or had some sort of involvement by Bill Graham, it's obvious the lineup was patterned after his Day On The Green shows.

Being 2nd on this bill really does not mean much. They may have only narrowly edged out Triumph for that spot.

Just because Bill Graham is involved does not make it a festival. Plus, I would not consider every show labled Day On The Green at Oakland stadium to necessarily be a festival in the true sense.

Doubtful as Triumph was just breaking and BOC had numerous hit songs and albums from the mid 70's forward

Bill Graham was involved with many festivals. I would say at least 90% of the Day On The Green shows were festivals with a handful being the standard stadium tours rolling thru town.

Disappointing result for Norman. I know, we have to see things in perspective. Back in 1997 they wouldn´t have sold not even half of that figure but based on local media reports and people who actually attended the show I was expecting at least 55,000 and the break of the all time attendance record in OK.

Nope, Vancouver was posted.
excellent

someone post the total stats for 2009 and then lets lock this thread

all the non-U2-boxscore discussion is worthless, and distracts from what should be a useful and informative thread

Well, I can name one: The Rolling Stones. They pulled in about 53000. But I guess that is an unfair comparison.

Why is it an unfair comparison? In fact, given the size and success of this tour, the Stones are the only other group to compare U2 with. How many artists can sell 50,000 tickets in Norman Oaklahoma and sell 50,000+ tickets in France, Canada, Germany, Spain, Italy, Poland, Croatia, ect...

The Stones, U2 & maybe Madonna...MAYBE

good idea.

The problem we're having is that this is the 2nd or 3rd thread we've tried to have on this topic and unfortunately every thread ends up derailed with the same meaningless and off-topic discussion.

well now you have a completely legitimate reason to lock this thread, since there won't be any boxscores for another eight months, so there will be nothing further to discuss till that time.

Not bad at all, Live Nation even managed to make Norman a 'sellout'. It'll topple the highest grossing tour record next year, and doesn't have to do nearly as many shows as ZooTV.

And if you believe every show was a sellout and you think U2 has played to largest crowd for a concert by single artist in USA then I have a great deal on some swamp land opps I mean developable land in Florida I would like to sell you.....

It is funny that a band of u2 level has to play with the #'s just to make it all look so good. Just play the shows count the money and head back to Ireland and save the world....
I blame live Nation as much as U2 for deceiving the public. They got to make it look good for 2010. Keep the fever running!!!!!
Goldman Sachs might be a great sponsor for 2010.
