I'm going to be the nut who says that breakup jokes are not really funny to me. It's true that my sense of proportion may have left the building some time ago, but there it is.

(sources or no sources, truth to the rumors or not. The thought of them packing it just makes me a little sad.)

I'm too excited by all the new music I've heard this year, and am looking forward to later *cough* Arcade Fire *cough* to be upset about a lack of an album. Heck, given my last U2 show was Anaheim 2, I'd honestly be cool with that being the last U2 show I ever see as it was just about perfect. So my response to the latest rumors is

I only went to the Seattle 360 show when I was 16, so if they break up now I'm gonna pissed. I want to see more shows.

It wouldn't surprise me if there are internal struggles.

What's more surprising, given the history of rock, is that they are still together and on speaking terms and want to continue to put music out.

The main problem though is that you don't have Albert Einstein's brain.

Oh, I'd say we're both living up to our avatars in real life. :)

Maybe he stole it.

LOL, it has floated around over the years!

Agreed.

well it does mean he's not on vacation

to paraphrase jerry seinfeld, his whole life's a vacation.

If Larry and Bono are disagreeing over the record I hope that it's over quality and not commercialism. Whatever the case, they should err on the side of Bono because it's his guidance that gave us Achtung Baby, Zooropa, Zoo TV, Passengers, Pop, and likely the Unforgettable Fire. It's possible that he's lost it somewhere in Provence, but the man was a visionary genius.

I just heard Burton & band had a falling out. Very long and convoluted connection to the source of that, but that's what she's heard.

Colour me not-very-surprised if true, I'm not going to make vast assumptions about what or how it happened but it would explain the sudden halt.

This has been my greatest fear. Hopefully it's not true, but it wouldn't altogether surprise me if it is.

In all honesty, I wonder if a break up is on the cards? How hard can it be to record some songs. Not the first time this has occurred, so one has to wonder if they are sick of it by now?

A not-very-educated-but-a-hunch-nonetheless would have it at around 40%? I don't think retirement for them is at all an awful thing.

There doesn't seem to be a "we've found our way again" vibe about U2 right now. If they're struggling this hard to finish an album, I think that means the opposite has occured. I think it's very hard to deny that something has gone amok in the U2 dynamic. It seems like ever since NLOTH was a flop, they don't know how to proceed, and are constantly 2nd guessing themselves, and not trusting/liking each other. I think Spider Man added unnecessary tension. I think in a few years we'll read about this era as a low point for them.

this place...

U2z are apparently no longer liars because they are apparently no longer. So sayeth interference.

Oh no! Bono and Larry don't agree on a direction! U2 has fired a producer! They're taking too long to release something!

I dunno, sounds like business as usual.

There doesn't seem to be any vibe at all, at least not based on what the band members have actually said. All we're getting are quotes like, "We've got an album to finish." and, "We're really close.". I'm not reading as much doom and gloom into the direct stuff as most people, I guess, and I think the usual dynamic with U2 albums is that Bono thinks the album's done way before Larry and Adam do.
