Let's be honest: A crisis means bloody good music ...
It could also mean the end of music.

I think you and I have discussed "flow" and "album cohesiveness" before, no? If so then we are generally on the same page then. Yes, ATYCLB and HTDAAB didn't have the flow that previous albums did. I found myself skipping over songs on those two (HTDAAB more than ATYCLB) I agree that lack of cohesiveness hurt those two albums. I still put ATYCLB in their top 5 album lists...while HTDAAB falls way short for me.
Exactly.
I think Adam alludes to that in the Q article. He talks about "fighting against yourself...and not wanting to lose". So they understand the magnitude of what they are doing as well.
As one of my college art professors once said to me before regarding creating great art...."creating great art is tough....whats tougher is trying to do it again....and again...its like diving deep into the ocean. The deeper you go the more you feel the weight of the ocean above you. You are literally fighting the weight of the ocean. Art is the same thing...you are constantly fighting the weight of your own previous work. You will always be judged by that."
thats stayed with me since then.
also of note, larry said in the interview that one or two of the pieces they did with rubin carried over.
I am willing to bet its get your boots on and/or crazy tonight.
Who was your professor ? Oscar Wilde ?

Well didn't Edge mention that he wrote the chords to the chorus of Stand Up when he was working with Rubin? If so, then there's ONE of the two songs that survived.
Not necessarily--he wrote those chords in October of 2008 (Right?).
I don't think so.
Go back and reread the Edge part of the article. He said that when he and Bono went to California for some Women's conference hosted by Maria Swarsz...Schwart....Swa (The Gubernator's wife) that Edge went to play with some blues legend and ended up writing the chords then with Rubin. I could be wrong...so i might just have to reread it.
Have you heard any of their records in the last 14 years?
Yes, that's the part I'm referring to--I'm pretty sure Q gave the date as October (of 2008). My understanding was that since he was in town and since they are probably friends/friendly, Edge decided he'd bring a new song over to Rick and get his thoughts (2 months ago). While talking to Rick about it, he got the idea to write new chords for the chorus.
Yeah, I just checked. It says October 2008. So this song could have been written in between 2006 and 2008, and Edge just wanted to get Rick's thoughts on it.
Really?
Well then, that would put the nix on the rumor that they parted with Rubin in a bad way...wouldn't it?
Yes, it definitely would. It sounds like the way the band described the split was actually the truth. It shows how cynical people can be--many assumed that the band's description of the parting was euphemistic for what was actually an ugly break-up. I was a bit dubious myself.
I think that was one of a couple of overblown issues with the band lately.
The other was the whole supposed Larry/Bono rift over Tony Blair and George Bush. Total bullshit. You're talking about two old friends with extremely deep ties that run much deeper than any political affiliation. Funny how the media is trying to play it up as something really serious when in reality its obviously nothing close to that.
BTW, I am too lazy to go back through the thread for release dates! Does anyone know when the hard copy of this magazine is hitting shelves in the US? Is it already out? Thank you in advance.
EXACTLY!!
Unfortunately, along with the good work Q is doing, we will be treated to a significant amount of overplay in the drive to sell publications from them and other outlets. I will try and take the good w/ the bad, but the Larry rift is completely overblown and unnecessary. He has strong opinions on the Iraq war, Bono shares them. He just believes that working with Bush or Blair on other important issues like poverty and development is the way to get things accomplished, and I happen to agree. The example I always use is if you own a bar and dont like the Mayor because of some policy, you will still work with him to get a liquor license. Blair controlled the money at the time, so you work with him. It wasn't like Bono was defense minister or Larry was speaking out against Bono's many accomplishments, he was just saying it made him feel somewhat uneasy.
Sorry to ramble, overblown, expect more of it!
Actually Bono did worse than that. He specifically went on the record to say these men were well-intentioned, when they in fact weren't. They simply don't care about the Middle East. It's like saying you care about teaching someone else's child to swim and just throwing them in the water without protection.EXACTLY!!

If Bono had just stuck to non-war/human rights issues, it might be okay, but he's gone further to say these were just civilized disagreements. 1980s Bono wouldn't have done that. There was nothing civilized with what Bush and Blair did; they misled people deliberately and with condescension toward the Middle East -- amidst much protest in their country's; Robin Cook resigned from Blair's government in protest, God rest his soul. Blair is a vile piece of garbage and he deserves no respect on these issues.
At least we can confirm one thing from the Q article - Bono still smokes.
Countdown has begun Brothers & SISTERS.....!
