I listened to POP over the weekend (it's been a while since i gave it a spin), and was struck by how awesome it really is....There is only one weak song - Playboy Mansion. This is a criminally underrated album, in my opinion. I even love the much maligned, Miami. Gone and Please are classics, up there with the best of U2. Wake Up Dead Man is a great closer.
I don't want to start another war, but, as much as I love HDTAAB, i think POP is the better album. The songs have a certain boldness and edgy (no pun intended) quality to them, which is mostly absent from HDTAAB.
I miss when U2 was "weird," as one of my friends put it. As much as everyone complained about the '90's and how they strayed too far off the traditional U2 path, i think it is their best decade, musically speaking. U2 may not have been totally satisfied with POP, but i think it will stand the test of time.
But I can't complain really - after 25 years, they are number one in 22 countries, they still are the best live band on the planet, and they can still make records like HDTAAB.
