I didn't think of POE and WILATW as preachy, as they both are written not from a perspective of 23olds or 27year olds trying to change the world but the perspective of 40 year olds who realise changing the world takes more than just words, and they even have a angry, sorrowful - maybe resigned - tone to them.
Much different than the 80's U2, which was somewhat preachy, but never without hope or self-doubt.
I also doubt U2 will get political - keep in mind Bono has to keep his AIDS/Africa options open no matter who wins US elections.
BTW ATYCLB's themes - apart from Grace/POE/WILATW - were a lot more down to earth. Leaving people/things behind, moving on, sense of loss, dedication to family/wife, starting anew in your life, focusing on the basics musically.
