Just recently, I have noticed how much of a burden writing checks in stores is compared to ATM/Debit cards or check cards. I've had a check card for 6 years and I quit writing checks in stores about 2 years ago. Now, I am becoming irritated with people in front of me in lines who do. Checks are so old fashioned and slow now! Not only do they have to be written by hand, the cashier makes you write your phone number and social on the front, then stamps the back and wants more of your life history there, then she writes on it herself, then she sticks it in the cash register, and it all takes so much more time than the debit or check card would. To add to this, it seems most people don't even dig out their checkbook or begin writing until all their shit is rung up and the cashier announces the total. Then it seems they will wait for all the things that have to be done to the check before they ever start writing the record of the purchase in the backs of their checkbooks! It seems women are more guilty of these things than men, and the older they are the more likely they are to do it.
Checks can still be good for paying bills by mail (especially if you need to 'float' one until payday if anyone has ever been as poor as me) I know paying online is faster but I have trouble with the passwords and stuff and they usually don't work for me. But if you do pay online, why have checks at all?
Anyone who has a bank account also has access to a check card or ATM card, and almost all stores accept them and some prefer them to checks. A check could turn out 'bad' (bounce) but with the check card, you and the store both know right away if it will be okay! So why doesn't everyone give in to technology and electronic purchases? They're faster and easier for us all. I would love to hear your imput or comments on this, pro or con. Thank you
