Stars Set to Make Poverty History

Some of the leading names in film and music are getting behind a new initiative to rid the world of poverty. Busted, Jamelia, Bono, Scarlet Johansson, Stephen Fry, Paul McCartney and Travis' Fran Healey have all pledged support to the Make Poverty History campaign.

One of the men behind the campaign is writer and director Richard Curtis who is perhaps best known for his blockbuster movies 'Four weddings and a Funeral' and 'Love Actually'.

Curtis has taken 2005 off to concentrate on the campaign but before taking a break from writing he has a penned a new TV film based around a G8 summit. 'The Girl in The Cafe' stars Bill Nighy (Love Actually, Enduring Love), Kelly McDonald ( Trainspotting, Gosford Park) and Indian actress Meneka Das (Little Box Of Sweets) . It is to be directed by David Yates who is shortly to direct the new Harry Potter film.

The film has allowed Curtis to bring many of the things that he has seen in his recent travels to the public eye. Although it is a love story, the setting is the G8 summit and allows the script to flow with facts and figures pertaining to the suffering in the world. The film along with the Make Poverty History campaign is being launched to coincide with the UK chairing the G8 summit in Scotland this summer and taking over presidency of the European Union.

The Make Poverty History campaign calls on world leaders to reassess the suffering caused by poverty. The need to cancel debts from the poorest nations and those under constant threat of poverty is paramount to the campaign. It is supported by many world charities including Oxfam and World Vision and also has the support of unions and religious groups from all faiths.
U2's frontman Bono has already spent many years bringing awareness of the suffering of the world to its leaders. He has pledged his support to the campaign and has recently expressed publicly his decision to dedicate his life to the helping of others. "We can make extreme poverty history, I really believe that" he said.

He went on to say " The kind of stupid poverty where kids are dying for the lack of an immunisation that costs 20 cents, or for lack of food in a world of plenty. Don't we want to be the generation that says no to that?"

Former Boomtown Rat and Band Aid founder Sir Bob Geldof is also spearheading the campaign. "This is about firing the starting pistol to the year of 2005 when Britain is the chair of the G8 and the president of the EU......the reality is that only politics created this dilemma and only politics can resolve it."

The public are encouraged to wear the White Band - the symbol of the Make Poverty History campaign.
