Would be a perfect time for Leo to bum-rush the stage, to be honest.

Nobody would see him coming, then the lights come on during Edge's opening chords of The Miracle (of Mike Damone) and Leo is standing in front of Bono and Bono runs off stage screaming.

Her recorded vocals piped in?

I'm guessing they're trying to figure out if it works that way or not.

Personally, I think that idea is lame.

Yeah, her recorded vocals in place of a live vocalist. I'll edit that.

I'm just glad it's getting played at all.

And considering they have a separate recording space at the coliseum while they're rehearsing, I'd be very surprised if we don't get at least a couple unreleased songs. I wonder if they will be recording sound checks as well; maybe SOE will turn out to have a little New Adventures In Hi-Fi vibe...

“We’re keeping the discipline on songs and pushing out the parameters of the sound,” Bono said.

:hyper:

“They’re very basic earthy things, irreverent. They’re not lofty themes. One of the things that experience has taught us is to be fully in the moment.

:hmm:

What’s the moment? Pop music.”

:| :(

And yet they're working with a guy from Lamb, who were electronic trip hoppy, weren't they? So odd, this band.

It'd be awesome if Edge actually has a combover under that cap of his. And I don't mean like a Dylan Moran combover, I mean the kind where a handful of strands are lovingly plastered across the scalp with brylcream.

Well, they said the
lightbulb setup resembled Bono's own room on Cedarwood Road. So that would certainly be a possibility. But it doesn't seem like an opener to me, personally.

I've been asked to not say too much, but I can say that

at this stage, neither Cedarwood Road nor The Miracle are the opener. Things could change. But at present, nope, neither.

Some people - both in this thread and on the tour forum - have made very good guesses as to the opener. Some have made very bad guesses.

California has the driving energy behind it, but to me it seems weird to open a show with such a specific location-based song.

Volcano is a rocker, but pretty downbeat in the verses before the bridge kicks in.

My money is on This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now. Long intro, and the "Soldier, soldier" section has a martial beat, followed by that quick, dancey verse.

I hope to god it's not Iris.

I think Invisible might make sense, Boner in his room yelling to his Dad that he's not invisible and would appreciate something a little brighter than one 40 watt bulb to read and write.

Sonically and thematically it works, and I'd be overjoyed. But as I said before, you really think they'd open with a non-album track? Especially one that didn't make much of a dent as a single?

Consider that Reach Around comes from a similar place lyrically--the sound of The Clash galvanizing them to action, despite his father's pessimism.

I think it might be Invisible as well. Album or not, millions saw that Super Bowl commercial, so it wouldn't be totally out of the blue.

And maybe it will have a nice guitar solo tacked on at the end finally...

Well, at least they'd be getting it out of the way. Kind of like REM opening their 88 tour with Stand to get it over with.

But in all seriousness, that's the worst idea anyone has ever come up with, anywhere.

I don't see how Invisible would work given the one lightbulb idea. The song climaxes right after the intro, so the sound doesn't fit the aesthetics.

I will start a campaign for them to open with A Sort of Homecoming.

I woke up this morning all "That's it, time to listen to U2." It feels like it's been ages since I've spent any time listening to U2 beyond a song here or there.

Hello, boys. You're lovely and I've missed you.

I haven't listened to much U2 yet, but I'm starting to get excited. I may need to get tickets for some extra shows.

Someone in the other part of the forum mentioned discussion/rumors that shows would be available for download. It was being discussed apparently both on Backstreets (the Springsteen forum) and the @U2 forum.

Great NY times article. I am intrigued by the sound setup this time around.

What if they began playing in total darkness, with the lightbulb flickering and then turning on during the chorus and "I am not invisible"?

Perhaps we're overthinking it.

Looks like Bono is going to have lots of fun this tour. Blondes usually have more fun.
