Heard The Miracle on 107.1 today here in NYC.

Sounded good on the radio, the guitar and drums really thumped!

Vertigo succeeded as an intentionally dumb rock song. Boots failed because it was an unintentionally dumb rock song. And The Miracle is just alright. Nothing truly offensive, nothing to really get excited about either.

Vertigo - punk rock mother of rocknroll songs made on Venus
Boots - sexy rhapsody of matriarchy

Miracle - ...dad rock

"Vertigo", "Boots", "Discotheque", "Elevation" all these songs are a bit dumb. But there's nothing wrong with it, specially when it has interesting aspects instrumentally ("Discotheque" obviously and partly "Boots").
I wouldn't say "The Miracle" is dumb or silly, because it's lyrically better in terms of substance, but I wouldn't say it's better or sonically richer than the dumb "Discotheque" or "Boots".

There's nothing dumb at all about the lyrics for Discoteque. It really doesn't deserve to be lumped in with the leaden rockers of the last 15 years either. Sonically, it has more going on than Elevation, Boots, Vertigo, and the Miracle combined.

Well, the original album intro of Disco sounds awful, the interludes between verses also and the "high" scream is perhaps the worst part, so I wouldn´t say it is so awesome sonically, althought I love the song

All subjective but lyrically: I'll take Vertigo and The Miracle over Disco.

"You know you're chewing bubble gum you know what that is not you still want some. You just can't get enough of that lovey dovey stuff"

And of course "Boom Cha"

Sonically: it has that similar chorus burst of power guitar that The Miracle is chastised for having.

Live environment:

Elevation and Vertigo both created significantly more excitement and crowd reaction during their debut tours than Disco(Boots fails on all accounts)

I like the song, don't get me wrong but I keep hearing people blast "millennial U2" for things they were doing similarly or worse in the 90's.

Wasn't my intention to call Miracle a "dumb" rock song. Where Vertigo was just like "let's be silly for a change" with its '123 catorce' and 'turn it up captain' shit, Boots failed miserably in its trying to be subversive in the guise of dumb rock. Miracle is just somewhere in the middle; they're reining it in a bit, scared of doing something egregiously dumb like Boots, but losing the charm of Vertigo because it's too conscious of the subject matter to really cut loose and go somewhere beyond just being a pretty okay song about something we've been told to believe is meaningful. My biggest complaint about the song (aside from the loud vocals) is that it's a little too precious in its handling of the theme.

I didn't mean to properly say that "Discotheque" is dumb, I don't think it is. I was thinking more about the way it is already seen sometimes by the overall public and casual fans.
"Vertigo", yes, I like it, but I think it's dumb, and not only in the 1/2/3/14, "Turn it up loud captain" and so. Today I still don't know WTF is Bono talking about with those sloganeering lyrics. "Boots" is also a bit silly, but when I started to interpret it as some sort of feminist song, it grew a little on my consideration.

Boots had a good idea but they fucked up the execution of it.

Vertigo has pretty clear message to me. It´s about being in a place where your mind is flooded with various experiences, possibilities the modern entertaining world gives you. The symbol for it ican be a rock concert, party, drugs or whatever...but in the end it leaves him numb and empty. Bono finds his way out of it in faith in God.

Which means that's it's lyrically vague enough to have any interpretation we want. "One" for instance have that characteristic too, but for different reasons: I wouldn't say it's vague, I'd say it's open enough for it.

Vertigo's message is fine but it didn't matter...to most listeners it was all about the "Hello Hello HOLA" and "Feeeeel."

I'm sure I've read somewhere that 'Vertigo' is/was a club in Mexico and that is what bono is singing about. Something about an attractive girl he sees dancing "a feeling stronger than a thought" etc. At least that starts makes sense!

My impresion on Discotheque/Elevation/Vertigo/Boots/Miracle:

If Boots had been in ATYCLB and Elevation in NLOTH, Boots would've been acceptable and we would've hated Elevation.

Probably Boots it's the weakest of that bunch, but it was also the last one of a series of "dumb" rock lead singles.
The first was subversive, the second was still fun, the third was pushing things... but the fourth, again?

I think that The Miracle (and Volcano) walked a thin line but managed to avoid falling into the "dumb" rocker category, thanks in part to the lyrics.

There is no such thing as a 'dumb' U2 song.
There are good songs and not so good songs, faster songs and slower songs,
but no dumb songs.

A bit like their fan base, except for the lack of dumbness.

Gee, I really wonder what thavidesco's opinion on The Miracle is. I don't think I've heard his thoughts on the song.

Man. It's not like the discussion in the main forum has every been that intelligent, but holy shit, the quality of discussion seems to be hitting all time lows in here lately.

Me no like Song

It sound like other song

It has guitar

My dad likes it

But, but... it means they're striving for dad/dumb rock then! They just want a hit! They're not making the music they want to make! :D

Whether that is true or not we'll never know. However, artists do second-guess themselves and make regrettable choices. It happens. BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

What was the message? To Shop at Target? Or learn how to count poorly in Spanish?

I believe it was about the fear of backsliding and falling into sin, taking place at a "place called Vertigo," which could be a mental state or an actual physical location.

But really, it was all about the "Hello Hello...HOLA!"

Oh yea, and the "FEEEeeeeEEEEEL"

Actually I don´t mind Miracle, what made me upset was their choice to make it a single, when there are 10 better songs on the album. What is also annoying when people compare it to obviously better songs like Vertigo/Boots/Elevation :)

Let's stop the 'Dad Rock' talk...it's insulting and it's a meaningless tag. Whatever your opinion is of this song, it's the FIRST SINGLE...deal with it and move on. The song hit Number 1 on the Adult Alternative Charts, so it obviously has appeal, even if some of you don't like it...

Exactly and The Miracle is still one of the best songs on SOI.....IMO
