IRISH TIMES: U2 ALBUM IN MARCH, TOUR IN JUNE
Posted: November 16, 2013
By: Matt McGee
The Irish Times has a lengthy and very good article looking back at Paul McGuinness' career as U2's manager, and what his departure might mean going forward. It also includes this unofficial and unconfirmed statement about the timing of U2's new album and a tour:

Today, sales of the new U2 album, which is due out in March, no longer really matter much. Sales of tickets for their world tour, which is due to begin in June, really do.

That's a little different from the most recent reports related to a new album. When news hit last week about McGuinness' decision to step aside, Billboard magazine cited sources that said the album would be released in April 2014.

I listened to this song on a loop for a fortnight. Have never been the biggest Pearl Jam fan but this song has the lot craft, lyrics high above Bono's current range and the most spine tingling vocal performance I have heard, since hearing One for the first time.

Maybe I am just getting soppy in my old age but I don't know if U2 are capable of writing a song that takes over your soul and wonder what life was like before Sirens.

actually they did write Moment of Surrender

A song about impending death and love he still feels, he sings: before you were here, I danced in laughter with the ever after. But all things change let this remain. Mighty lyrics to me.

have you heard the rest of the album by chance? Im wondering if its as good as sirens...

Great song. Thanks for posting

Tour opens in June, which seems very likely and obvious, and in line with what Larry and Bono said about the tour opening in May. I can't see how anybody could justify U2 playing arenas in Europe. Take Paris, for example; 2 nights at Bercy = about 30,000 people vs 2 nights at Stade de France = 180,000 people. Rough estimates obviously. Artistically arenas would be great, and lead to better shows and setlists, but from a business standpoint, it's almost a waste of time for U2 to play an arena show, when they could play at a stadium in town and play to 4 times as many people, if not more.

360 showed us that if priced right, U2 can do a stadium tour in the USA. Vertigo probably should've been in stadiums here, as the demand existed, which they've pretty much said in hindsight. I do believe there will be some arena shows in the US this time, though. Get into some of those smaller markets.

Australia/NZ, South Africa, South America will obviously be in stadiums. Japan might get some arena shows, like they did during Vertigo, or they may not mess with Japan anymore, as it hasn't been a strong market for them since the late 80s. An arena leg could be done in Pacfic Rim Asia.

Worldcup has no commercials during game play. Pre game, half time, and post game.

And I fucking love worldcup. And championsleaguefinals as well. And I'm a big fan of the Barclayspremierleague. Manchesterunited is my favorite team.

I also enjoy watching theworldseries and thenbafinals. Not as big of a fan of thestanleycupfinals though.

Perhaps U2 can do a television advertisement at the tostitosfiestabowl.

Obviously no ads during game play, because football matches don't work like that. There's a 15 minute break in halftime for that, and before/after the game.

They said they'd do things differently to 360 on the next tour, and Bono mentioned going into arenas.

I hope you're right. I personally don't care about the whole arena vs. stadium debate, as I always plan on having good seats for U2 (either line up for GA or buy the good seats the moment they go onsale).

However, on the Vertigo Tour I saw 4 different shows (Chicago 5/7, Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Detroit 2nd night) and each show had different setlists, and was a unique experience because of it. On 360 I saw 1 show in 2009 (9/13 Chicago), and 2 in 2011 (E. Lansing/Pittsburgh). The 2 I saw in 2011 had the exact same setlist, same snippets in the same spots, etc. Still enjoyed both shows, but that's what you get with a static stadium setlist, unfortunately. The 2009 show was completely different in terms of setlist and overall vibe and theme of the show. It really was 2 completely different tours, with the same stage.

I still don't think they'll do arenas in Europe. They didn't do it during the Vertigo Tour when they toured Arenas in the US, yet still was stadiums in Europe.

Execpt for South America. I don't think they will ever do stadium tours over here.

I wonder if, with all this 'Live Nation - management news', we gonna have more chance to look for domain names, maybe now we can find something

I wonder whether the tour will start in Europe? I know the rumours, but touring Europe in June/July may not be the best idea due to the World Cup. The U2 Nation machine will surely have considered this?

They surely will have, but who knows what they will have decided? *cue image of U2 Nation rubbing hands together nefariously with evil cackles*

I'd assume they'd tour the US first, as usual. Perhaps June-July. THen move to Europe when the WC has finished in august-september, and back to the US for oct-nov?

The world cups in brazil so why would that effect planning a tour in europe?

The stadiums will be full with or without the world cup,im sure theve toured before when the world cups on.

They've toured on World Cup's years, but I don't recall if they toured on same month. However, I don't think it should affect the tour as well.

I hope the tour passes here on early 2015

16th June U2 - Ziggo Dome, Amsterdam
16th June Netherlands v Germany 9pm kick off

Do you not think a scenario like that would effect ticket sales?

I think the last time they toured Europe during a World Cup was possibly 1982

Edit. I don't think they've ever toured Europe, apart from a few festivals, during a World Cup. Coincidence or planning?

The albums a grower with different styles from blues to punk. Future Days is a beautiful lullaby to end the record. Sirens tho is on a different planet, his father died of MS and he is friends with an athlete who suffers from a motor neurone type disease, I think they must have been an influence on this song. It gives us a window into their life and the emotions they deal with, from feeling invincible when they were young to death over their shoulder.

Probably I'm getting a bit carried away, it's just a song. It's just that it tells a story that consumes you and you don't want it to end.

Football is huge here so I do think that if there's conflicting dates, it'd generate less ticket sales from casual fans. Sure the hardcore ones will still go see U2, but people who just want a night of fun would rather watch footy for free with mates.

Thanks I will definitely check it out. You are correct about not wanting that song to end, its just about perfect and sounds like it has ascended from heaven.

With the timezone differences, I'm sure they can make it work without much issue

Was browsing Coldplay forums looking for any updates about their next album, I came across some U2 rumor. A confirmed rumor in the Coldplay circle said that they were shooting for may/June 2014 to release their new album, but have pushed it back to September to avoid competing with U2, who will release their album in April.

Take that for what it's worth, which isn't much.

It would probably be intelligent for Coldplay and U2 records to not be released at the same time.

Similarly, as easy as it is to dismiss the rumor (if it can be called that) that U2 pushed back their album to avoid competing with Arcade Fire, it's not absurd to suggest that U2 and Arcade Fire releasing albums at the same time wouldn't be the best idea for either band.
