Finally got around to Lasers by Lupe Fiasco. Already one of my favorite hip-hop albums after 3 spins today.

I liked everything else. But SBS acoustic was just sad, somehow. It reminded me of - I think it was LM and me awhile back joking about them doing an unplugged casino tour someday (I think LM's joke was The Fly Unplugged). It also seemed like it was so late in the show that people were starting to leave, and that Lady Gaga was the highlight of the show, and then they brought out Bono & Edge when people were already tired and yawning and starting to leave. It had a sad quality even though I enjoyed the set and applaud them for doing something different.

A Man & A Woman was pretty amazing, I have to say.

 SBS sounded just fine, but the only acoustic version of it that has any teeth to it was when Edge played it solo in Sarajevo, that was seriously moving. I did like the altered late verse lyrics though.

I forgot all about the event but saw posts about it in the other place and started checking out the replay video, needless to say I was stunned to her AMAAW, which I happen to love, and it sounded so great. I definitely wasn't expecting a live debut. Maybe there's some hope for the rarities idea Bono kept talking up this year.

& yeah, the strings managed to get more excitement out of One than I've heard since Slane castle. Oh and stripped MS was a pretty rendition as well, I know a lot of people got tired of it this summer but it never gets old for me.

"We should get a string section, they often have girls in them"

If I didn't know Lupe's background, yeah that album would be great compared to the sea of mainstream crap, and there are some tracks I dig I lot (Words I Never Said, State Run Radio, etc.) but I want deep cutting edge Lupe back.

It's the only album I've heard by him. I've had All Black Everything stuck in my head all day.

It's a catchy album, but the production/beats don't suit him and he's rapping about nothing. I mean, he sounds like he's rapping about something every now and again, whenever he throws in words like "Iraq" and "television," but it's actually meaningless because those moments feel tacked on. And knowing the way the album was concocted, I'm guessing they were.

Loved his first two albums and I want him to get back to soulful beats and rapping about shit he actually feels.

Yeah, this is the album the label wanted clearly, his previous work is concept driven, socially aware, provocative and very mixed in terms of the genres of music that influence it. Though he's called a 'protege' of Kanye West because of being signed by West, it's clear that LF had an influence on the progression of the mix of sounds that Kanye's music has taken on since then.

But yeah, it is infectious and I suppose if one isn't drawn to alternative hip hop on their own this would hopefully be a gateway drug. Check out his earlier albums if you get the chance.

If there's anything fully positive I can say about Lasers, it's that people know who Lupe is because of it. His other work isn't exactly alienating, so I'm thinking he might actually retain a good chunk of that fanbase also.

I too enjoy All Black Everything, btw. Lupe's own favorite from the album and mine.

My mates dig it too. They dig the commercial sound; they think Tical 0: The Prequel (and Dre's 2001) is better than 36 Chambers.

It makes me despair, but occasionally they come through.

I despise Lasers. It may be my least favorite of the 50 or so odd albums I've heard so far from this year. State Run Radio is a shit sandwich and a half.

State Run Radio is so bad and on the nose I can hardly believe it's on a Lupe album.

Elsewhere, "I really think the war on terror is a bunch of bullshit/Just a poor excuse for you to use up all your bullets" is one of the worst lines of the year and I seriously question that Lupe wrote it. I can't believe it.

I suppose I should have posted this in the unpopular opinions thread. State Run Radio is probably a song I'll be skipping a lot.

 State Run Radio is one of the few I put down as a highlight merely because it's one of the tracks that I really like the beat on the hook to, but it perfectly exemplifies what LM was talking about: throwing in buzz words to make it sound like it's still relevant and socially conscious.

The album works just fine as background music, but not music to listen to on it's own.

As I don't do a whole lot of serious music listening, and it's more of a background thing for me at all times, I care more about the sound than the lyrical content anyway. Maybe that's why I also really like the Blueprint 3 a whole lot.

I love every fucking second of Achtung Baby, but my love for Tryin to Throw has skyrocketed (from already high levels, always loved it) since reading Bill's book. A gorgeous, world-weary song about not giving up on the night till it's more than given up on you. They were so cool back then. What it must have been like to be a fan.

Tryin' to Throw Your Arms Around the World is an amazing song live. Edge's simple but effective guitar playing makes that song, which is oddly missing on the admittedly subpar studio version.

But I like the fact that despite Achtung Baby being what it is, most of the songs are much, much better live, containing some amazing parts that aren't there on the album (mostly related to Edge's soloing).

Truth. Until the End of the World and Mysterious Ways especially take off in the live setting. One of my favorite U2 moments ever is Bono's falsetto wailing over that intense slide soloing from Edge in ZooTV Mysterious Ways.

Looks like I'm a day late to the party, but happy birthday to our favorite musketeer.

Well, my brain has taught me a lesson. Thought about scaling back the amount of time I spend on interference, but no. The past two nights I've had dreams about you people. First night was me, IWB, and GAF watching Pirates Of The Caribbean. Why? I don't know. Last night was playing softball with Peefer and iYup versus Scumbo, Laz, and Impy, despite the fact that I'm completely useless at sports.

To put it quite simply: Get out of my head. All of you.

Palladia is consecutively airing Rattle and Hum and what I assume is the Basement special of King of Limbs. Pretty neat.

So, this moment in I Am Trying To Break Your Heart where they're trying to mix "Heavy Metal Drummer" is the big argument between Tweedy/Bennett that I'd been reading about for years? That shit was nothing. They were both pretty cool about the whole thing. Tweedy just seemed stoned and not particularly in the mood to worry about it at the moment. And then they hugged it out like 5 minutes later.

Expectations are a bitch.

My Zola Jesus goodies came in today, and I didn't realize the beautiful marbled white version of the new LP was a UK import. You can imagine my disappointment when I opened the box to find an extremely thin clear LP.

But oh well. Hot jams will now be pumped.

For the past couple months I've managed to stay away most of the time, it's too time consuming, not that I don't enjoy it. I think I'll stick to popping from time to time. Mostly I've only been coming in for weekly Community discussion.
