Grammy Nominations 12-02-09

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Should we be surprised? Brilliant music is almost always ignored by the Grammys.

You guys are still comparing Achtung Baby and NLOTH? Achtung Baby was actually nominated for a major award. I hardly call that "being ignored" by the Academy.

It's pathetic that U2 fans would've taken pride in their favorite band beating out the Taylor Swifts and the Green Days of the world. At least Clapton was a honest to goodness rock icon.

Besides, with the exception of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Phoenix in best alternative album category, the Grammys can't ever be depended on to recognize the critically acclaimed. Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, Metric, Dirty Projectors, Andrew Bird, etc with a total of zero noms...and you're complaining that U2 was "ignored". I bet if Phoenix didn't have 1901 all over a car commercial, they wouldn't have been nominated either.

I wouldn't call it a "major award". There is a consensus in the U2 fan community that U2 should have won "Best album" for Achtung Baby! U2 getting the "Best Album" award for Bomb in 2005 seemed to be more of an act of apology than anything else from the Academy. Their last two albums have been over-awarded. Sadly, that means the Academy is on a U2-break right now, so there are no awards for the really great U2 album that is No Line On the Horizon which many do still consider their best work since Achtung Baby? (I'm not the biggest AB fan here. With the Grammys, it's all about tactics.

the Grammies were on last night?

I'm glad I chose to sleep at 2 a. m.

Its curious ...wonder why U2 didn't even show up at the Grammy's ...

- Did they know they weren't going to win?
- Keeping a low profile after last year's performance?
- Other obligations?

I thought maybe Edge would go or something "incase..." but I am sure in their hearts they knew they weren't going to win.

i still think it's funny that the Silversun Pickups were nominated for "Best New Artist".

as far as U2, i will admit that i was very excited when they won all those awards for ATYCLB. it was nice to see them have some critical success after they got beaten up so badly during the Popmart Tour. since then, i really haven't cared. The Grammy's is just another idiotic awards show.

Artists are usually hinted if they will or won't get any awards before these kind of ceremonies, as with the Nobel, someone always contacts the winners to see if they will accept it.
I know that someone will jump and say I don't understand the music industry at all, but I know that's how it works, I even know that there were cases, I'm not talking about the gramys here, in which the awarded has changed because someone couldn't appear on stage and another one could.

They knew they weren't going to get anything, so it was much better to stay wherever they are preparing the tour or trying to finish a new album.

NLOTH not being nominates for best album, losing against Greenday for best rock, Achtung Baby losing from an unplugged album, the overawarded HTDAAB (9 grammies!?!?) and ATYCLB (7 grammies...), Crazy Tonight being nominated in two categories, Crazy Tonight being nominated at all???

What does this say about the Grammy Awards and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences?

It's only a popularity contest. As the singer of Tool once said:
“I think the Grammys are nothing more than some gigantic promotional machine for the music industry. They cater to a low intellect and they feed the masses. They don't honor the arts or the artist for what he created. It's the music business celebrating itself. That's basically what it's all about."

[GibsonExplorer]sounds like a bunch of excuses to me.[/GibsonExplorer]

Green Day :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

NLOTH >>>>>>>>>>>>> 21st Century Breakdown

It shows you how ridiculous the Grammys were this year that Crazy Tonight got nominated and Magnificent and Moment of Surrender did not.

well, crazy tonight is better than magnificent and moment of surrender.

why do i say this? 'cause music is objective, and that's how i feel, and that's how enough people felt to nominate it. doesn't make it true in your eyes, just makes it what it is.

That's very well said.

 Mind if I sig you? If so, too late, because I just did so.

And I also am one of the 'few' people who actually like Crazy Tonight a lot. Taste is such a strange thing.

I think you meant to say "music is subjective". If it is objective, then people's personal opinions wouldn't matter.

I have no problem with KOL enjoying some wins. I just wish it wasn't for "Use Somebody". I'm not even sure how that song became such a hit. They have written far better. But such is life. I've been surprised in the past by some U2 wins, so it all balances out.

I do feel, though, that the lack of super success by NLOTH and any singles is what caused U2 to be overlooked. Had NLOTH produced a "Vertigo" or "Beautiful Day", things may have been very different. Sad to say, but many times sales success equals awards success (this goes for movies too).

Still, U2 was super-rewarded with ATYCLB and HTDAAB, so it's acceptable for NLOTH to be a bit overlooked (as was "Pop"). U2 still dominated the Rolling Stone awards, have the respect of many in the industry for NLOTH (and specific tracks on the album) and have a massively successful tour. In other words, U2 still have success, just not Grammy success this year. It's a shame, but even AB didn't have much Grammy success (and it really deserved a lot).

Didn't expect U2 to win anything so I'm not disappointed. NLOTH is a grammy album, but something told me they weren't getting it.

Did expect Beyonce to beat Taylor Swift. Beyonce like her or not put out 4 or 5 serious hits and the writing was good (If I Were A Boy is way better than anything Swift). Taylor Swift had 2 maybe 3 songs and they were about as lite as you get. I blame Kanye, if he hadn't opened his mouth, Beyonce would have won. Beyonce's performance? Wowsers.

Pink on the trapeze = stunning.

LaVomit = :lol: :lmao:

Bon Jovi = seriously, shut up. Rescued by the audience sending the clear message that we don't want to hear you say another line except "woah, we're half way...." ;)

Mary J and Bocelli = amazing  Her Haiti-benefit covers have been beautiful. She's on another level.

MGMT = robbed. Plain and simple.

Finally, what the fuck is with the fucking editing during Drake's performance? It's fucking 11 fucking 15, network tv, and the fucking kids are in their beds now so what the fuck? (Besides, they didn't even edit the right parts half the time anyways...like, it's not ok to let a swear word fly, but it is ok for Lil Wayne to say "pistol roun my neck you dont wanna hear that thing talk"?? Rap Comprehension Fail  )

Maxwell...nice..loved to see Roberta Flack. Such a powerful voice still.

Overall Beyonce and Pink were the best imo.

Yeah, it's a repeat of the past. Ah well, these two albums don't really 'need' the grammy's to approve of them.

Was Kanye West there? :shifty:

Really? It sounds pretty much the same as American Idiot to me, some songs are just exact clones. Same chord progressions, melody..

And can someone tell me who Taylor Swift is? I've seen her on roflrazzi a couple of times but I've never heard a single tune of her here!

Yes , no 21st Century Breakdown is amazing.. lol

I blame Kanye, if he hadn't opened his mouth, Beyonce would have won.

Nah. I don't think the sympathy for Taylor extended that far.

Yeah, Kanye wasn't invited for a reason, but the industry needs to get over it. Kanye is Kanye. Don't get all high and mighty thinking you're "punishing" him, Grammy people.

I don't like Taylor, but this was apparently her year - she won pretty much everything else under the sun.

Glad to see Beyonce win over her in a few categories, though.

I like Taylor Swift. I have her album and it is good and I hate country music.
