Yeah, that helps. I once worked with river (remember him? he used to be a part owner of this site way, way back - like, 10 years ago), on a music site which had a lot of U2 on it, seeing as we were all from here in some way or another, and that helped keep my interest as it fed it in a new way.

Just discovered Perth tickets are $20 cheaper than Melbourne's cheapest. WTF. Guess I'll wait and see what they play on Progressive Nation in Europe before deciding ... eh, it may sell out by then though. I guess I really don't care that much. This year's kind of sucked for me as far as live music goes, though. I went to a greater variety of concerts last year, and there were more concerts that at least interested me, even if I didn't actually go. I'm having trouble finding anything of interest scheduled in Melbourne at the moment.

PT's US tour begins mid-September, then they hit Europe October-December. Can only hope they'll come back here after the good sales last tour, but I haven't kept up with rumours ... I bet Serena knows if anything's been rumoured or not!
I haven't heard any rumours regarding the land down under yet, but I know a lot of you folks on the other end of the world are certainly asking about it!
One rumour I do know about post-European leg is that they may be coming back to the US since the European leg is a good two or three times larger than the US leg. I'm assuming if there are any plans to hit Japan or Australia, they'll fall after that.

Honestly, if it weren't for running U2gigs, I'm really not sure how much I'd bother with this stuff. But I enjoy doing the site, so it keeps me somewhat interested in what the band's doing even when I'm burnt out.

and you're still going to go to every single show when they hit australia and new zealand. you trooper! i don't know how you put yourself through it.

hi anna!

Funny how I enjoy live music and travelling and stuff, isn't it?

Do I like going to U2 concerts? Yes. Do I like the majority of U2's music? Yes. Do I like running U2gigs? Yes. Would I bother to participate much in the U2 fan community or pay half as much attention as I do to the band if I weren't running the site? At the moment, no.

Got a problem with that?

Name doesn't ring a bell, I'm afraid. But yeah, it's funny how running these sorts of things can feed your interest, transform it a bit.

Ah, shame there's no good rumours yet. But thanks anyway! Hope something materialises at some point next year ... after the first whirlwind visit, they really need to come down here and do a proper tour.

Unfortunately, even the second US leg rumours are just that - rumours, at the min. Some have said yes, some have said no and nobody knows what's going on right now.

And Roadrunner are also really doing a bang up job with everything. The Time Flies video got released over on muzu.tv and no one outside of the UK can watch it! They also didn't bother to say that it was available for people outside those regions to watch elsewhere either. Not to mention before that, they said the single would be available to listen to, but no announcement was ever made. Instead, they just offered it as a download to people who pre-ordered the deluxe edition, which I am SO passing on. The price tag is absolutely ridiculous.

*huffs* I'll stop ranting now.

Haha, oh, I can see why people can't stand Roadrunner. It really surprises me that PT are with them, given they aren't your usual banal, cliche Roadrunner band. But then I guess they're mainly with them for the distribution Roadrunner can provide that most other labels who'd take an interest in PT can't.

I still haven't heard Time Flies, myself. I think I might just wait for an album leak, since I'm not in THAT much hurry to listen to the lead single and my last search for a download proved fruitless.

That's what I'm thinking, but sheesh I can't stand Roadrunner! The whole mess with "announcements" isn't even worth following. You pretty much can't count on anything they say at all.

I heard it when I watched the video. It's not bad, but you can tell where it's been chopped to hell and honestly, I just want the whole 12 minutes. The video is kinda neat though. I'm just anxious for the whole damn thing. I can't wait to hear the stuff that I'm going to see live a week later.

I remember Roadrunner made a mess of Dream Theater's single/album release too, but then ... well, it's Dream Theater and their latest material is a mess anyway, so it's kind of fitting!

I reckon they should've just released Bonnie The Cat as a single.

Not seen any sign of an album leak yet?

Haha. I haven't even listened to any of Dream Theater. I hear their older stuff is good. Thinking about giving them a try, got any recommendations?

Haha, I hear Bonnie the Cat is REALLY heavy at some point. A small bit of it is in the medley too, I think.

Nah. People over in PT's shoutbox on last.fm are constantly crying leak just to rile people up, but I don't think there's been a leak. Really, I can wait for the release. I'm just going to buy the standard 2 disc edition.

Yeah, their older stuff is worthwhile. I still enjoy the albums Awake and Images And Words. Their last two albums have been some of the most completely embarrassing music I've ever heard - midlife crisis on a grand scale. The couple of albums preceding them aren't exactly flash either.

I just can't wait for the lyrics of Bonnie The Cat.

Damn. I'll probably just download the album whenever it does appear online to piss off SW. (Nah, if the standard album's a reasonable price, I'll probably pick it up.)

Haha, wow. I'll check them out sometime. I'm really into God Is An Astronaut at the min. They're a lot like Russian Circles and 65 Days of Static.

The lyrics, eh?

I think the preorder for the standard album is $14.99, but I would have to go back and double check that one. I won't be grabbing it up until next week, I don't think.

Oh man, God Is An Astronaut is awesome. I'm particularly fond of the album All Is Violent, All Is Bright.

You implying it's instrumental?

I imagine the price to buy it from an Australian retailer will be moronically expensive, so if postage isn't going to be ridiculous, I might get it on Amazon or somewhere. Maybe I'll order it the same time I order the Unforgettable Fire remaster to try to save a bit on postage.

That's the album I am absolutely hooked on right now. Forever Lost is fucking amazing.

No, no it's not. :D

That sounds like a wise idea. Isn't TUF's remaster not until October though? Or am I off? I'm not up to speed on U2 news. I'm still pissed that they're not coming close enough to me.

Suicide By Star is my favourite on there. New Years End from Far From Refuge is another absolute favourite.

Oh, good! Well, I dig instrumentals, but in this case, I can't help but wonder what on earth it'll be like lyrically.

Yeah, the UF remaster is out on 19/20 October. I figure I'll download PT's album when it leaks, then I can just wait until October to get the physical copy. Still don't own physical copies of most PT albums, actually. Been meaning to order Stupid Dream for a while ... I've seen it in multiple shops here, but always for an absurd price.

Suicide By Star is really good, but I just love Forever Lost a teensy bit more. I haven't listened to Far From Refuge enough to pick a favourite on that one yet.

One thing is for sure, I don't think the title has anything at all to do with the lyrics ...

For shame. :tsk:

I had to make a catalogue of my PT/SW stuff because I can't seem to remember some of them at times ... I'm only missing a couple of the PT albums now.

Really, the only GIAA album that I'm not totally keen on is The End Of The Beginning. The others are all quality, with very few weak points.

I still can't wait to see what it's about.

I have ... uh ... In Absentia and Deadwing. Heh. That's pretty piss-weak, even I'll concede that. But hey, I went to all three Aussie gigs in 2008, so I've been supporting the band. Will probably go to all Aussie shows again if they come here next year.

I still have yet to check out the other ones, but I just love everything I've heard so far. They're great. I love finding new music.

... hehe. Well. Those are the first two I ordered, with FoaBP and the Arriving Somewhere DVD ... then I went and got Insurgentes and I've just gone downhill from there. I'm a monster.

Another good post-rock band you should check out is Laura, who are actually from Melbourne and put on a really good gig when I saw them last year. Radio Swan Is Down is their best album, easily.

You have no idea how long I've been meaning to order Arriving Somewhere. I have the audio but I'd love to properly see it. Same goes for the Blackfield DVD, though the way people talk about Aviv Geffen's stage manner, I'm not sure I should be in such a hurry.

Perhaps the one band whose material I badly need to order the most is Agalloch.

I'll check them out when I get the chance. I seem to like your taste in music, to put it mildly.

Arriving Somewhere is great, but the editing that is in it does put some people off. Personally, being somewhat of an artsy person myself, I find it just lovely! I like it a lot. As for Aviv ... the only things that really throw me for a loop with him are how his accent causes him to sound a bit sheepy at the ends of verses and the fact that he strips his shirt off. Logically someone of his build should look okay shirtless, but it just doesn't work for him at all. :crack:
Oh. And he's a bit overdramatic.

I think there's more focus on SW with that performance, come to think of it. I love his Punk Royal shirt.

Man, I still haven't checked out Agalloch. The one track I heard wasn't bad, but I guess I have just been preoccupied with other stuff.

They're definitely worth it, and they get points with me for interesting use of the cello. Their cellist sure knew how to rock it live too.

Yeah, I'm quite interested in the Arriving Somewhere editing, to see how effective it is at enhancing the music (or if it flops!). As for Blackfield, I've no problem with anything Aviv does that can be heard in the audio of the gig, so I guess it can't be too bad then on the DVD. Oh, and isn't there a No-Man live release of some kind floating about?

Get into Agalloch! Any of the three albums are good, but The Mantle's probably the best starting place. Or maybe Pale Folklore is; that's where I started. Easily one of my favourite bands, top five, and I just wish there were even the faintest likelihood of them visiting Australia. They don't even play live much in the US or Europe, though ...

Back in 15 minutes.

Cello in rock is usually a good thing. At least, what I've heard. I'm sure I'll like them.

The No-Man live release isn't for a while yet, but yes, there will be one. The Wherever There Is Light EP was pretty good. In love with the song Counting.

Haha, yes sir! I'll look into them too. You're just having fun making a monster of me, aren't you? It's all a part of your plot to control the world!

Well, that took longer than expected.

Hi Daniel! How's it going today?

They definitely employ the cello well in their soundscapes. But do check out Agalloch first.

Oh, OK, No-Man's live release still isn't out? Glad I'm not TOTALLY behind on things then. Haven't checked out the EP, though.

I'll send my army of penguins after you if you don't check out Agalloch.

Ahhh, you're making all these recommendations to me and I don't know which to check first!

Nah, not yet. They're having a launching thing sometime this month I think that both Tim and SW will be in attendance of. Some people got to get tickets to attend, but it's in the UK. I can't remember when it's scheduled to be out though. I'm still dying to see Insurgentes.

Ahh what are they gonna do? Peck my eyes out?

 Well, Laura's good and all, but Agalloch, as I say, are one of my top five favourite bands (PT, PRR, U2, Crowded House, Agalloch), so it's fairly natural that I'd suggest them first. Pale Folklore is the most metal of their albums and the most clearly linked to their black metal origins; The Mantle brings in some more folk and post-rock stylings, and Ashes Against The Grain puts even more emphasis on the post-rock. I've never been quite sure how to define their specific genre ... black atmospheric folk metal? Bit of a mouthful.

Ah, so it's soon then? Cool. And what's the deal with Insurgentes?

They're vicious emperor penguins who could tear you limb from limb. Watch out now!

Haha. It sounds good to me. Well, Pale Folklore sounds like something that'd need to grow on me, but The Mantle sounds great!
I'll try anything once. :sexywink:

Yeah, I believe so. Insurgentes is so far slated to be premiered at a film festival in Copenhagen. I'm assuming after that, it might be released on DVD. At least, that is what I am hoping. I want to see more iPod destruction!

 Flee!

Pale Folklore's what got me into them ... it's not really THAT black, only their earliest demos even veer properly into that country. She Painted Fire Across The Skyline opens the album and it's my favourite Agalloch track, just sprawling atmospheric metal goodness. That said, The Mantle has In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion, the other contender for my favourite Agalloch track, and I think "sprawling atmospheric metal goodness" suits it as a description just as well.

Ahh, I see. I'll have to download it and watch it on my iPod. Somewhere, SW will feel this twang of pain that somebody's put it on an iPod.

I suppose I will just have to find out for myself.

Good old Axver, I can always count on you for a good musical conversion.

 He'll go mental, track you down and smash your iPod.
