Exactly!

But this will not be a Coldplay discussion.

I dont even talk to people after I say I like U2 and they refer to him as BoneO.

I would have ended the interview with Shirley Manson on 3 nights live after she did multiple times :)

...oh my god... They are the same person!!! Thom is Clay in disguise. how did I not see it before

"stupid U2 and whatever that lead singer guy is named Boner or something? god and they dont even know how to count in spanish! and do they think the name "the edge" is cool, they are not gangsters or anything, those guys are like my parents age."

^ average U2 hater/ ignorance

:D

One of the things that drives me crazy is when people say something like "All U2 songs sound the same" - I seriously do not understand how people get this perception...even if you compare 2 different songs and choose songs that are in the same vein like say...COBL and Streets....this claim still doesn't make sense to me...they're so different to me

yes that claim annoys me too....because "lemon" and "sunday bloody sunday" sound oh so simmilar

"I can't stand Bono. (***insert name-calling/request to make Bono disappear here***)." :crack:

See, I don't have an issue with this either really. A lot of people don't like his ramblings, a lot of people think he's pretentious, the whole change the world thing. That's their opinion. To be honest I like Bono but he has his moments, and I couldn't care any less about his non-U2 stuff, really.

"Their music doesn't appeal to me - but I like Coldplay".

This is the only one that ticks me off. People who think U2 are terrible, but because Coldplay are contemporary..

btw, kind of off topic this just came to mind- but doesnt this smiley look like Thom Yorke: :crack: lol. Had to get that off my chest...

People who say that haven't heard enough U2 songs. If you made them listen to Numb and Angel of Harlem back to back they might change their mind.

And yeah, the two biggest ones are definitely "I like their old stuff but now they suck" and "I hate Bono because he's a douche because :blahblah: " the first one doesn't bother me as much as the second one ... it sucks that people hate Bono so much because 1) he's actually doing good in the world and 2) it makes people hate U2 even though his philanthropy and personality shouldn't affect people's opinion of the music

Oh well, as I said in a thread I made wondering where the hell all the U2 fans are, someone's buying all those tickets, so despite the fact that there seem to be haters everywhere, there are plenty of U2 fans out there.

Every time someone posts here and says "look what these idiots said about U2" and post a link to a message board thread or something I'm always like 'Eh who cares, just ignore them, it doesn't matter what they think'. Until I actually got myself involved in a U2 discussion on another band's message board. I'm all riled up and ticked off at the nonsense.. :yell: So, long story short I understand why it makes some people mad to read about the hate on other boards or websites however its really in your best interest to just ignore it or you'll make yourself crazy. :crack:

But is it so wrong to hate 'new stuff'? I'm sure there's an artist out there, AB, for whom you only like their earlier work.

Pink Floyd, prefer their earlier stuff.

David Bowie? Find me someone who loves his newer work more than his famous stuff.

good advice Sicy! I learned this the hard way :| I am a senior in high school, and all my friends know I love U2 (well obsessed really). I however introduced one of my high school friends to U2 and now it is his favorite band and he loves them! but most other kids make fun of me because of how overly obsessed i am with U2.

for instance: "Is U2 all you listen to?"
I reply with "well, I listen to a few select bands that really speak to me and who have a lot of deep music that will take me a lifetime to completely appreciate"

Don't ever be ashamed or whatever for your love of U2. The others just don't know what they're missing. :D

well I said that doesn't bother me much  It does make me sad though when I dance with a cute guy who puts on Bad at a party (well, after we danced, it's not exactly a dancing song) and says he loves U2 but hates HTDAAB and then later on facebook he says he won't even give NLOTH a chance because he heard 30 seconds of Boots and didn't like that either, when really he should give it a chance because every record is different and just because he didn't like HTDAAB doesn't mean he wouldn't like a record as great as NLOTH

The "is U2 all you listen to" comment is one that I heard back in high school 15 or so years ago.

I asked them what CDs they listen to and responded with "those will make good coffee mug coasters in a few months"

Interestingly enough when U2 came here not more then 4 years later I saw those same people in the audience and asked them "I thought you didnt like U2"

They were pretty quiet after that :)

oh, well that's fair. my bad.

Irrelevant, unoriginal, mediocre, boring, overrated, all the songs/albums sound the same (Because War and Zooropa sound EXACTLY the same, am I right? :|), BONER IS A PRETENTIOUS DICK LOL, etc.

The only comments that REALLY bother me are these ones: "Everyone who likes U2 is an asshole/douchebag/doesn't know anything about music."

I do like this though. :D

here is a chesnut:

"the new album sounds too different from U2."

The exact same person an album later:

"It's too U2-by-numbers."

Another self-contradiction classic:

"Man, I'm just so sick of the political/religious overtones in Bono's lyrics!"

same person within the same argument:

"Man, what's with all this 'Discotheque'/'Get On Your Boots' shit?! What happened to songs about Northern Ireland and South Africa?!!

At the end of the day, it's not hard to determine why U2 has a passionate legion of haters:

1) They sing songs about God and large social (I hesitate to say 'political') issues.
2) They're very post-punk.
3) Bono.
4) They're too popular and have been for so long.

Reason #1 is uncomfortable for a lot of people. While I disagree completely, I can understand why some people don't like that. Personally, I don't like Bono's onstage speeches (I call this redundant didacticism -- preaching to the converted), but, you know, he's been around for a while, he can do what he wants.
Reason #2 is why older people like George Harrison and my dad don't like them. My dad is enthralled watching Eric Clapton play a 12-bar solo for three minutes, but at the drop of a U2 song he falls asleep. Why? Because some people of the 60s generation are so beholden to the blues and traditional forms that they can't appreciate the post-punk mentality and ethos at all. U2 are not great musicians, don't care about guitar-solos, don't want to sound like traditional R&B guys . . . and yet they go on about how they love those kinds of musics and people. This was what got them into trouble on Rattle & Hum.
Reason #3 is a strange one -- Bono offends some people's sensibilities because he's too much of a do-gooder who talks a lot. A lot of people aren't offended by do-gooders, but they're offended by people who talk a lot about themselves. And Bono is both. I respect him for that because he's obviously intelligent enough to know that any rock credibility he had (if he ever had any after the mullet) goes out the window as soon as he talks about human rights campaigns, etc., and yet he goes right on doing it. But for people who prefer their musicians simple, humble, and focused on music, Bono can seem too much.
Reason #4 is the most obvious thing -- the bigger you get, the more people want to knock you down. And U2, against every conceivable career curve known to rock, has never really been taken down. You can see people's desperation for this when Pop failed to set the world on fire (only 7 million sold!), and the non-U2-friendly parts of the rock press acted like they had released Metal Machine Music by Lou Reed. I seem to remember Britain's U2-hating music press mag Melody Maker giving the album a 0 out of 10 rating... This kind of thing in itself proves that U2 have reached the stage where they are larger than the industry, and we cannot take any printed review seriously anymore because everyone comes at them with so much knowledge, experience, and opinion that no one's perspective can be objective anymore.

Here's a few good ones from another band's forum that I inadvertently got myself involved in

This one is funny:

'I think that WRONG is better than the whole new U2 album. ' :lmao: ok dude.

Depeche Mode forum I'm guessing?

The thing that always gets me is that people LOVE to hate U2. They spend more time writing blogs about how much they hate U2 than anyone here spends writing about how much we love 'em.

No one can hate them silently. They seek out U2 related stuff just to leave a negative comment. It's gotta be that they secretly love them. Why else spend so much time and energy toward them?

It's easy. Attention.
These people who hate them publicly don't really 'hate' U2. They just need something to hate to gain attention with. And Guess what, U2 is a big band with a lot of fans, of which plenty are easy to get a rise out of. So yeah, just shout you hate U2 and they'll come flocking by thousands! There's your wanted attention!

Also note that most of these 'haters' can't give you a proper answer when you actually are trying to discuss why they dislike U2. They just say they hate them and Bono's an asshole. Well that's a nice reason. Nice discussion there, not. They just hate for the sake of hating.

Exactly!

But this will not be a Coldplay discussion.

Poor Thom, he really looks like he needs some happiness pills.

Likewise, I kinda introduced U2 to two of my friends and they really like them, one of them has a certain obsession with Lemon and Discotheque, and with the latter he loves the Boom Cha dance. :D
