I have to say I'm pretty disappointed about this news, the reports have been so intriguing about this new album that November couldn't come quick enough for me.

Bono's really talking this one up isn't he?

I mean I know he's never exactly restrained when it comes to hyping a new album, but those are some pretty big claims, 'the most innovative, the most challenging album yet', he's even comparing the transistion from HTAAB to this album as the same as the one from JT to AB so the band are clearly banking on this record being up there with those two classics.

Boy has this album got alot to live up to.

I'm cautiously optimistic.

But while Bono is itching to get the music out he says it’s going to be early 2009 when we first get to hear the songs.

‘I’m always the one who underestimates how easy it is to simply 'put out the songs now', if it was just up to me they’d be out already! But early next year people will be able to start hearing what we’ve been doing. We want 2009 to be our year, so we’re going to start making an impression very early on …’

It's going to be a great spring.

I'm not slogging through 28 pages of this to see if someone else has already said it, but:

DOUBLE FUCKING ALBUM.

If they have this much material, and think it's all that good, it's time for their fucking White Album. Or Physical Graffiti. I mean, it's not like people are suddenly going to start calling them pretentious for it. If any band has earned the right to a 2-fer it's them.

Or maybe, they'll release an EP of songs that didn't quite fit the tone of the album to keep us sated until the fall. There's no way they're going to be able to make people wait an entire year longer after all the hype so far.

I agree with Elfa: I'm going to have faith that the band overrides McGuinne$$ and tells him to stuff the autumn-only strategy. What's the difference between 3x platinum and 4x platinum when you've already come this far?

HERE,HERE.......I said it as well....if they aren't throwing caution to the wind then just let it fly with a boatload of songs....I don't want 11 overproduced on an album and 39 beautiful unpolished ones left off of it.

DOUBLE ALBUM

This is actually the most promising news out of the U2 camp in years.

This delay is basically the opposite of the Chris Thomas delay. Back then things were not working and they knew the songs were not good enough. They changed things up and started over basically...

This time around it seems there goals are loftier and more grand. From what we heard back in June/July they already have a complete album in the can and ready to go...an excellent one from all reports. The difference this time is that instead of a dearth of material, they are finding "diamonds" in the "darkness" and want to keep going because of ARTISTIC INTEGRITY. Isn't this the U2 we have been missing for nearly a decade or more? Isn't this what we all really want? Suppose they really do come up with even better songs or improve the songs they already have? Won't that be worth it?

You will have this album to enjoy for the rest of your life...getting it a few months earlier is not worth giving up any quality.

I know many are worried about the material being "overcooked" but from the sounds of things they are not so much producing existing material as they are coming up with new and great ideas. And with a mindset of creating something innovative, epic, classic, new, bold...I'm not so much worried about overproduction being an issue.

Time will tell of course but I'm excited.

Am i the only one who fears a double album ? I much prefer 2 seperate albums released at opposite ends of the calendar

I would absolutely adore a double album, but it's not going to happen in a million years. U2 always leaves dozens of songs lying around for us to dig up later. Why would this time be any different?

I'm both apprehensive and excited about the idea of a double album. I mean 50-60 tracks sounds great in theory, but I think the quality threshold could be a little variable.

Not to say I wouldn't love to have U2's Physical Graffiti though.

So i have lunch then i come back and buuumm! We don't have an album for 2008!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NO ALBUM THIS YEAAAAAAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I hope Oasis and The Killers albums kick some ass!! 5 f**in year for a new album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's unbelievable!!!!! U218, Remasters, all bullshit! Just to keep us buying stuff! I'm pissed!
It would be U2 summer 2008/09. Now it's ruined!!!!!

Well, either way, I'm hoping for a full on fantastic album. I hope it's a grower like Achtung Baby was for me. A step outside the norm, that made me really listen to it to get the full depth of the album...

Agreed! I can wait to 2010 for the tour if it means that kind of album. Also, it gives me more time to save money for the tour. :)

So I take it you're not bored now?

You're only happy because you're expecting an shocking, innovative move from U2, plus a Passengers record. I'm expecting the same ol' same ol', but a year in the distance.

Well hopefully you'll be pleasantly shocked with the rest of us when it comes out. Certainly those leaks hold promise enough to back up what Bono is saying. I'm also happy because U2 has plenty of material to go past their midlife crisis better than the Rolling Stones with good material for another decade at least.

I love this band!!!!!! Whooo whoooo!!!! I'm so excited!!!!!

A double album that has no filler is another option I'm reading as well. That's another great possibility.

I'm not even worrying about Coldplay vs U2. They would need a Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby level set of records before they could be at U2's position which is an enviable one.

Just watch the posts start racking up with people saying U2 has sucky material and is lying to delay the album. This band has probably 130 good songs so far, why wouldn't they be able to do more? Also Eno and Lanois are probably going to collect more coin from this record because they are not just producers. That's an incentive if there ever was one to put your best material with this band.

I've never seen a band with such a high concentration of good songs along with great quality.

God this post is making me so hungry that I want a nice juicy roastbeef sandwhich with all the fixings.

I can also take a break from this site for a while and pursue other interests while I wait for a friggin awesome record to come out in March! WOOOO HOOOO!

Yesssss! I feel like Tom Cruise on the Oprah show. I want to jump on my chair except the wheels on it will make me fall and break my neck.:hyper:

Thank you Steve Lillywhite for finding good hooks!!!!!! Thank the entire group and producers and tech guys for not selling out and rushing an album like before.

I love these guys!:cute: It's like your favorite sports team kicking ass once more.

I say HELL MUTHAFUCKING YES to this entire post! It is time. It is high time for a U2 double album epic!

Bono, are you taking notes???

wow people act like U2 owe them?

U2 owes us absolutely nothing.

I just wish they would stop fucking around in the studio and actually settle on something. They've continually worked on this album for over two years with several different producers and made countless changes of venue, and there is still no end in sight. Unless they're actually working on a double album ( :der: ), this is shaping up to be an overproduced mess.

"We want 2009 to be our year"

It even sounds hilariours!! As if he is messing with us! I don't buy it really...

I think most of the stuff they already have is no good. If we think for a moment, they are at their 50's.
It not easy to come out with good stuff, worst if you have some high standarts to measure up.

5 years is too much for a band that's always on evidence like U2.

I told you guys. You wouldn't listen. I used my Taylor Swift release-date analogy and everything and none of you even batted an eye.

Good that they decided to give us some news, even it is disappointing we won't get an album this year.

So they're on a roll songwriting wise and want to keep going... who says they have to stop if they release an album? Why not take 10 - 12 of those 60 songs and put out an album in November and keep writing to get another one Zooropa style mid tour or something?

I like that Bono acknowledges that the band need to change and be innovative.. but it worries me with him comparing this to the Joshua Tree/Achtung Baby change and saying they are going to make their best album ever. Could be too much hype. And them making an album intending it to be their best ever worries me that they'll over do it and boom we got another Bomb.

Ugh, wish I could hibernate for a while.

Honestly, Bono is going to start sounding ridiculous in a year if he's still talking about how lost in the music they are. We want to get lost in the music too, dammit.

As long as his voice sounds revived i guess I can be ok with waiting til '09. If he sounds like he did on "wave of sorrow" im going to

Any one else thinking that beach clip "only love" is going to wind up being the new "mercy" (left off the album)?

‘This is our chance for us to defy gravity once again...

i might be playing the blind fanatic, but thes are beautiful lines... heavy poetic stuff... let's hope that the inspiration for the lyrics is as good as for interviews

As much as I want new U2 music now, I respect the band's choice to release it later than planned. One time, I didn't cook some chicken long enuff and got sick, so I fully understand the importance of getting things done properly, and not releasing something until it's ready.

Hats off to Bono and his posse. :applaud:
