The f:censored:g idiot can't ban these books from the library. He's just posturing. Geez, it's been a long time since I've been this pissed off about politics. This is truly a dark day in my state's history. It is really too much.  :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored:

You know what? I really can;t be bothered to give these people any attention anymore, because they thrive on it.

They feed on it like a fire does oxegen, so starve 'em of it.

I agree they're pretty trashy people. I happen to work in a library in Birmingham, Alabama, and I know this guy can't raid our library and take every book that mentions "homosexuality" in a "neutral" context. He can stay out of our library, thank you very much. Speaking of banning I personally would not want this guy in our library. Of course he wants attention. He'll get it. Ah, dunderheads..... :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored:

all this does is make me feel even less safe than i already did after the election. while these are certainly cheap political tricks and won't do anything other than whip certain elements of the Republican base into a frothing homophobic frenzy, they do, however, contribute to a less tolerant climate overall by equipping people first with language to discriminate -- "activist judges" "god intends" "between a man and a woman" -- and then methods of doing so. it adds fuel to the fire of homophobia that occasionally explodes in bashings. no, banning books doesn't cause anyone to bash, but it raises the temperature in the room, so to speak.

and it feels just wonderful to be a still socially acceptable object of scorn. :|

If we're going to ban books, why not ban romance novels? Those really screwed me up. I would read about inexperienced virgins being ravaged by virile men and exploding in orgasmic bliss and think the first time I had sex would be mind-blowing. Instead, I lied there thinking, "What the fuck was that?"

OMG! I laughed so hard when I read that! Great way to lighten up the thread.

And the feckin' idiot who proposed this ban in first place...there are not words to suitably express my utter contempt for him.

He's dreaming. Worse than that, he's embarrassing himself. He can disagree with homosexuality, that's fine, but what he's doing is rather extreme, singling it out over pornography, bestiality, brutality, and such. I don't think anyone's going to buy his leap to ban "gay" books before anything else. Define a gay book. A book with homosexual characters in it? Men doing interior design?

I just feel like there's this chilly wind blowing across our political landscape these days, and yeah, it's scary. Nuts all over are ready to manipulate this situation for all it's worth. There's more of this :censored: on the way.

Homosexual agenda... they make it sound so sinister. Wait, maybe it is. If so why didn't I get the memo??

Honestly, this is sheer stupidity at best.

I can't believe people could think they'd be able to get something like this passed. And if that's the case, where do they stop? Someone mentioned remoing all controversial materials, but what about the authors themselves?

Do they remove all books by homosexual - no, wait, make that "non-100% heterosexual" - authors? (Because hey, the "homosexual agenda" doesn't just apply to gays. What about those nasty bisexuals/transsexuals/pansexuals/etc?) Will potential authors have to go through a screening process when they get published wherein they'd have to state their sexuality for permanent record, just in case they've woven in evil and subversive subliminal references to the "homosexual agenda" into their writing?

Like librarians would allow something like this to happen anyway... :tsk:

what the hell is a pansexual

This won't pass but it will definitely be brought up over dinner conversation to show how dumb and religious America is and why every other country on earth is superior in every way.

I think we find ourselves at an interesting time when the PC movement is getting way out of hand at the same time a massive leaning towards the ultra right religious is happening. I don't think it will be too long before a revolution of sorts will happen. Be it through a politician or from small groups of people just fed up with where this country is going.

Maybe this is retaliation for the NorCal school banning the Declaration of Independence....

The thing that annoys me the most about this kind of thing is that idiots like this make all morally conservative Christians look like Nazis. The term evangelical pretty much equals reactionary fanatic these days. And it's all a smokescreen in a lot of cases, a way of making oneself look self righteous to draw attention from the $1.50 he/she gives to charity once a decade, the giant mansion she/he lives in and the fact that in general he/she doesn't give a sweet damn about anyone who doesn't think exactly the same as she/he does. Lets harp on and on about a matter that consumes all of five verses in the Bible and ignore the hundreds of pages on helping the poor, sick and persecuted and then call our selves righteous... Makes me sick.

But as has been said the nest way to deal with these clowns is to calmly dismiss them.

Well, perhaps the morally conservative Christians who make up this man's constituency should speak up at the next election.

I would not be surprised if he got re-elected, but perhaps you have more faith in them.

just thinking ... if this passes (which it won't) then we'll have to ban shakespeare (all those sonnets written to a lovely young man) and walt whitman and the guy who wrote _Ethan Frome_. there's that scene in _Catcher in the Rye_ with Mr. Antolini. and there are those interesting passages in the beginning of _Moby Dick_ ... all sorts of talk about harpoons in a homosocial environment. pursuing a *sperm* whale, no less.

*shudder*

come to think of it, Bush's "mandate" sounds pretty gay too. man-date.

i went on one of those on sunday.

Hehehehehe...:p. Nice.

*Is very happy to see that everyone else in this thread is as unhappy about this as she is-restores her faith in humanity  :). Loved the point about the Bible that was made, too-so freakin' true*

By the way, I'm wondering if this guy paid attention in history class (doubt it)-didn't Hitler do things similar to this? What a great guy to emulate.

I agree with the people who are concerned that this will make all evangelical Christians look bad. Some people will just make blanket judgments of all people of the evangelical persuasion and will come to the grossly unfair conclusion that they are all stupid. I know this is not true, but there's going to be some real tensions between groups in this country. I personally know of some evangelical Christians *right here in Birmingham* who are not at all anti-gay. People are going to be singled out for certain kinds of treatment just by their membership in a group. This is scary.

I don't know what you mean

The so-called 'Christian coalition" or "religious right” have shown what they are already.

Some evangelical Christians think Catholicism is a satanic cult. Others know it's a group of Christians with a few different beliefs and practices. Some are smart, some are klutzes. They don't all think Roy Moore and now this "book banner" clown are wonderful. I don't need to be told that the Christian Right is running my state. I know it is. I know that there are some evangelical Christians who wouldn't vote for these clowns as well. :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored:

There are some protestants (a very small percentage) who claim that Catholics won't go to heaven - total bull. There are also a small percentage of Catholics who feel that way about protestants. It's unfortunate. We believe the same basic message, and there's no reason to slam each other over it.
