Well, it's NHL draft weekend and many wild rumours abound. The wildest and craziest one I heard was Malkin getting traded. Not a chance!

The Habs figure to be in the thick of things. Look for them to make a trade or three. Already, Ray Emery and Dan Cloutier have been put on waivers, paving the way for their contracts to be bought out.

We'll take Plekanic, please. You can have Hilbert, and ... shit, take all of them. Except Park. I like him.

well, I'm looking forward to the 10 (count 'em 10!) draft picks the Leafs have this year...

I'm sure we'll get all kinds of quality players that will either never see the NHL or get traded away for some old player past his prime

Chris Osgood Gets To Third Base With Stanley Cup
June 12, 2008

LOS ANGELES—Sources within the Red Wings organization confirm that goalie Chris Osgood, who is currently engaged in accompanying the Stanley Cup on a victory tour of talk shows and publicity events, has repeatedly and insistently claimed to have gotten as far as third base with hockey's championship trophy during the past week.

On Tuesday night Osgood, teammate Nicklas Lidstrom, and the Stanley Cup made an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno during which Osgood was seen repeatedly touching and attempting to hold the Cup. Witnesses say that after the segment had taped, Lidstrom left for the airport, while Osgood and the Cup left together for the Four Seasons Hotel.

Housekeeping staff said Wednesday morning that the Cup's room had not been slept in.

When asked for comment, Osgood himself initially refused to give details.

"Listen, it's tradition for us to all kiss the Cup. But I'm not one of those hockey players who are always saying 'I'm gonna fuck that Stanley Cup,'" Osgood told ESPN's Jim Rome when asked about his involvement with the trophy on Wednesday's Jim Rome Is Burning. "I mean, everyone dreams of winning the Cup, that's only natural. But it's not like that with me. Come on, man."

However, when Rome attempted to change the subject to Osgood's long and tumultuous Detroit career, Osgood, apparently warming to the subject, continued to talk about his relationship with the Cup.

"Okay, now, I'm not saying there isn't—it's a powerful feeling, when you win the Cup, and sometimes that leads to other feelings that are just as powerful," Osgood continued. "Things happen, but you and the Cup both want them to happen, and you go back to the hotel and ask it to watch Dirty Dancing, and eventually maybe you get into some up and over, or there's some up and down and underneath, or maybe—I'm not saying this happened, but you know—maybe there's more than one way to kiss the Cup."

"A better way," a grinning Osgood added as an evidently stunned Rome remained mute. "A way that brings the Cup as much pleasure as the Cup brings you. Or the great city of Detroit, for that matter."

Reaction from the world of hockey has, predictably, been mixed. Although the Stanley Cup is more revered than other trophies, perhaps because of its accessibility, not everyone is comfortable with the prospect of it being involved in mild to moderate sexual contact with a player.

"I know that every player on the winning team gets a day with the Cup. That's just tradition," said Detroit hockey fan Roy Wertree. "And no one deserves that day more than Chris, because he really got us through the Finals. And I know he and the Cup are both old enough to make their own decisions, but I don't know. Something about Osgood and the cup gratifying one another in a sensual fashion is just weird."

"Why would he even want to?" asked Grosse Point's Meg McEntyre. "I mean, the Stanley cup is older than he is, for one thing. And do you know how many guys must have kissed it over the years?"

Although the NHL has not officially commented on the event, sources within the organization say that Osgood's experience may not be unique.

"For years there have been rumors that the Stanley Cup had been involved in unusual relationships with top players," said ESPN's Barry Melrose. "Mark Messier was rumored to appear late at night outside the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto in the offseason, shouting the Cup's name until the police could escort him home. Wayne Gretzky was once seen standing between his furious wife Janet and the Stanley Cup in the corridor of the Edmonton Hilton, clad only in a towel and repeatedly denying that the Cup was destroying their marriage. And Gordie Howe's career was haunted by rumors that he allowed the Cup to tie him to seedy hotel beds. It's all part of why this is the greatest sport in the world."

so the leafs are putting Andrew Raycroft, Kyle Wellwood and Darcy Tucker on waivers...

Raycroft and Wellwood I agree with, I will be sorry to see Tucker go though, whether you like him or not, he was one of the few leafs who played with any kind of passion most nights.

Lecavalier Staying In Tampa with $77 Million Deal

The final touches are still being worked on and nothing can be formally announced until July 1, but sources tell TSN the Tampa Bay Lightning and superstar centre Vinny Lecavalier have agreed to terms on a mega-deal that will pay him $77 million over nine years.

The annual salary cap hit to the Lightning will be about $8.55 million for the length of the contract, but the final year of the contract is said to be only for about $3 million, which means that if Lecavalier retired after eight seasons, his average salary would be as much as $9.4 million.

The deal comes with the expected "no-movement" clause and should guarantee that Lecavalier will finish his NHL career with the team that drafted him No. 1 overall.

Sources say there are still some minor structuring aspects of contract required for it to become complete, but the announcement should made on or sometime just after July 1.

Lecavalier, 28, was entering the final season of a four-year, $27.5 million contract where he will earn $7.167 million.

Drafted in 1998, Lecavalier owns franchise records in points (602), goals (273) and games played (710). The Ile Bizard, Quebec native helped lead the Lightning to its first Stanley Cup in 2004 and captured the Rocket Richard Trophy for most goals scored (52) in the 2006-07 season.

Lecavalier scored 40 goals and 92 points in 81 games last season.

He really would.....maybe not so much now, but he does fit in nicely with the "old" Flyer mystique. I can see him out West like on Anaheim or something. Though I think he'd do better in the East. It's weird, since he got "dumped" like that, I don't hate him as much. I kinda feel pity for him. It's like.....I won. LOL. U GOTS PWND TUCKER! w00t!

It never seems to end well for that type of player though. I think it takes a certain level of desperation to be willing to do the things that Tucker (or Kris King, Dale Hunter etc) need to do to stay in the NHL, and that desperation leaves them hanging on maybe too long?

I think if he has anything at all left he'd be a great pickup for Pittsburgh. They could use the edge that he brings...Malone is too good a player to be doing that, and Roberts is toast. Picture Pitt with Tucker out there running around drawing penalties, and drawing attention to himself and away from their skill guys. Perfect fit...if he can still bring that every night.

Good idea esp now that Pittsburgh has gotten rid of both Malone and Roberts.

Looks like Tampa is toughening up!

I doubt Sundin is going to the Habs - my money's on the Leafs or the Rangers.

The Leafs have gutted whatever team they had. No more Tucker, Raycroft, Wellwood and now, possible Bryan McCabe. There's no way Sundin will return to the Maple Laughs after all that. I think the Habs are still in the mix, and it all depends on what happens between Jagr and the Rangers.

Sure Toronto is in the rebuilding phase but winning the Cup doesn't necessarily seem like it's most important thing to Sundin.

I would be very, very surprised to see the Habs acquire him, but how I would love it. Kovalev, Tanguay and Sundin

Sundin would be a good pickup for Montreal (well duh, he'd be a good pickup for anybody). The Habs need a proven guy that they can rely on and while Sundin is getting older he still can be that guy...even if he doesn't put up big scoring he's a guy who requires attention by the opposing D. With Mats on the roster he'll draw the other club's best checkers, opening things up for the Kostitsyns, Koivu, Kovalev etc.

I think Mats could do well in Montreal...he might bring them closer to this kind of thing:

Dan Cleary, bringing the Cup to Newfoundland today. Our first-ever Stanley Cup winning player. Hundreds showed up at the airport, and there's a huge Canada Day thing for him tomorrow in his hometown. I thought about making my way out to see it, but I've just decided that I'm much too lazy.

Yeah you have to feel for the guy, he was one of the last guys traded out of Quebec before they got to CO and won. Didn't they trade him for Wendel Clark? And I think they made a 3-way deal with Jersey and the Isles and ended up with Claude Lemieux but not sure, this was like 15 years ago :(

That's pretty much how it went down.

I don't feel bad for Mats, seems like he's happy in Toronto, and playing for that management group, he certainly had to know in advance that he wouldn't be placed in the best situation to win a Cup. He had his chance to be traded to a contender this year and didn't take it, so he's gotta be happy with the Laffs, somehow.
