U2 360 Boxscore Discussion Part II

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Again, what does this have to do with U2's drawing power in Montreal which is obviously larger than Celine Dions given that they can draw 162,000 people for just two shows?

Celine's run involves the production cost for 11 shows!

In addition, why is any of this relevant? U2 could easily do 11 arena shows in Montreal with the same production cost or cheaper than Celine Dion.

162,000 attendance at two shows is more impressive than 227,000 at 11 shows.

Celine production for those 11 shows is a couple million to gross $30mil.

U2 stage production for those 2 shows is 4-5mil and building the stadium is a couple million more. The similar sized temporary stadium in vancouver cost $14 million for 2 years. All to gross $15mil.

Celine's take home is far more impressive than U2's.

For the fourth time now, where is your SOURCE?

You actually don't no for a fact what either artist took home.

If you U2 wanted to play a small production over 11 shows in an arena they could.

U2 is clearly the bigger draw even in Montreal. If they wanted to do a cheaper production with higher ticket prices in arena's they could.

From 2003 to 2014 she will do $800,000,000 from a SINGLE THEATER SIZED VENUE.

Oh wow, I guess that means she can sellout any stadium in the world then right?

If this is indicative of some sort of amazing success greater than anything U2 is done, why can't she repeat that success outside of Las Vegas?

I'll tell you why. Because Las Vegas is a city where there is a steady flow of people every week ready to dump their cash on shows, beer, women and gambling. Its not to difficult for a popular artist fill up a theater with a fraction of these people every week who are there just for the thrill and entertainment and are not necessarily fans. These types of shows sell well because its in a small Venue in sin city.

If Celine is so big, why doesn't she play in the round in a football stadium in Las Vegas. Because the business strategy and situation would not work. Its kind of funny, but I wonder if Celine Dion could actually sellout a 360 stadium show in Las Vegas.

Has Celine Dion ever soldout a stadium show in the United States?

Don't you ever get bored making up things to make some other artist look more popular than U2?

Celine's arena staging. U2's arena staging is more elaborate.

U2 will build and then demolish a stadium in Montreal for one-night gig in July
Cost for temp stadium: $3mil

Montreal was the only city between July 5th and July 11th. $750,000 a day.

A decade ago Rolling Stone reported that Celine's arena production cost for a similarly eleborate stage was $100,000 a show.

I'm not that convinced of U2 being able to do 11 nights in Montreal in the middle of a national arena tour. On Elevation it took U2 a week or two to decide if they wanted to add a 2nd night in an arena.

My point is that her earning power as a live act is relative to U2. Especially when you factor in a $200mil CLAW production bill. To "compete" with u2 you don't have to play every show in a 360 stadium.

Desert weather is a problem for singers and her Vegas theaters had to specially climate controlled.

It's silly to suggest someone that's grossed $400 million in one city can't do a stadium in Vegas.

Celine has sold out the Superdome in New Orleans in 360. Though I take it that is was a arena format similar to college basketball. Aloha Stadium in Hawaii has also been played.

Sorry, but your forgetting a very important fact. The $750,000 dollars a day cost of the tour is DIVIDED up among the 3 different stages that are constantly in a state of being taken down, on the move, or set up.

The daily cost for the tour in Montreal specifically is only $250,000 dollars a day!

So at best, your talking about a $5,000,000 dollar cost, which includes the unique building of the stadium, something we will never see Celine Dion do because it would be too expensive for her.

In any event this is ALL IRELLEVANT!

I'm not that convinced of U2 being able to do 11 nights in Montreal in the middle of a national arena tour. On Elevation it took U2 a week or two to decide if they wanted to add a 2nd night in an arena.

Good Lord, the Elevation tour was 10 years ago. Look at the 360 tour. Open your eyes!

162,000 people in two nights! Just with that number stretched over 11 shows, thats 14,800 per night. You don't think that U2 could add 6,000 more per night given the benefit of being able to play arena's on different nights, and allowing multiple show goers more oportunities to fill up seats each night?

Its easier to play lots of multiple nights at a smaller venue and arrive at say a 100,000 attendance figure or 200,000 attendance figure than if you play only two shows and try to arrive at a 200,000 attendance figure.

There is also something that your forgetting to mention to everyone.

Celine's first 8 arena shows in Montreal occured from August 15 to September 1. Thats 8 shows spread out over 17 days!

Then the last three shows did not occur UNTIL NEARLY 6 months later and were her final shows in Canada on that tour. They occured in February 2009.

So, looking at that first 8 show run which occured over 17 days, the total attendance is 165,539. That compared to what U2 did in JUST two days 162,466!

Whats more impressive, 8 shows and 165,539 in attendance over 17 days, or 162,466 attendance in just two shows over 2 days?

Do you honestly believe that U2 could not spread out their 162,466 attendance over 17 days at 8 shows and sellout every show? Then wait 6 months and play 3 more arena shows at the same venue?

This is getting absurd.

Useless discussion. Come on. :madwife: This is about U2360 boxscores, we don't need to keep on talking about Celine Dion. Yes we could make comparisons between other artists' results in the same city, but this is mostly about U2.

We may get boxscores from Philadelphia, St. Louis and maybe East Rutherford this week. Here are the current stats (compiled by Maoilbheannacht):

Elton John did a run of 243 shows in Vegas starting Feb 04 and ending in April of 09. He actually shared the same stage as Celine Dion as far as while one artist was performing the other one was resting.
It's Vegas these types of Performers can sell these types of shows in a town that is meant for entertainment. People travel from all over to catch these types of shows and to gamble etc.
It has no comparison to an actual "Tour" I've seen Elton in Concert and he was great, but we all know he doesnt have the ablility to pull off what U2 has done in touring, and neither does Celine Dion.

It's silly to suggest someone that's grossed $400 million in one city can't do a stadium in Vegas.

Why? Its one thing to fill a tiny venue of 4,100 people and another to fill a venue that has 45,000 to 50,000 capacity. The question is are there really that many people there visiting and locally on a given week that she would be able to sellout the stadium.

Las Vegas is NOT typically a stadium market, for any type of event. I mean look at the largest stadium in the area, its much smaller than most stadiums you see in other markets. If you can sellout a stadium in Las Vegas, you would be able to sellout stadiums in nearly every other major market in the United States. Celine Dion can't do that though which puts doubt on the idea of her being able to sellout a stadium in Las Vegas.

This further drives home the point that the shows in Vegas as well as the gross from hundreds of shows there are NOT reflective of POPULARITY in the sense or context that we use it or compare it.

Plus the venue their using only holds 4,100 people.

My point is that her earning power as a live act is relative to U2. Especially when you factor in a $200mil CLAW production bill. To "compete" with u2 you don't have to play every show in a 360 stadium.

.

In terms of popularity, you do. You can't compete with the stadium artist by playing in arena's and theaters.

I've already shown how your mistaken about the cost of U2's show. Plus your forgetting that Celine Dion has to pay for a band and an entire orchestra for some shows.

What each artist takes home in the final anylysis is not public information. But what they gross and how many tickets they sell is public information.

In that area, U2 blows Celine Dion out of the water in nearly every market in the world.

Her last world tour did $279 million, which is only nearly a little more than 33% of what U2 is doing on 360.

The fact is, when you look at the entire planet, no one is competitive with U2 when it comes to touring overall worldwide EXCEPT THE ROLLING STONES! Thats it. That is the way it has been since Pink Floyd stopped touring in 1994!No little nit picking about an individual market is going to change that fact.

Celine Dion could not do a 360 world tour with the Claw. She would likely lose nearly $100 million dollars if she did the same thing. She is not popular enough to attract enough fans worldwide to break even let alone make a profit on a tour of that scale.

For a single CLAW it's $250,000 a day between June 29th and July 17th. I've seen the "$3mil a show" number thrown around a bit which lines up with $750k/day for the entire tour.

No way could the "all in" production cost(including Stadium) for the pair of Montreal shows be much less than $7mil.

Celine Dion's Taking Chances Tour 08-09 Had these results in Canada

Attendance-412,802
Gross-$51,302,251
Shows-22

U2's 360 Tour Canada results
Attendance-514,124
Gross-$50,761,828
Shows-8

That's not counting Moncton which u2 will play to a minimum of 80,000 with a gross of at least $8 million.

Looks as though U2 has Celine Dion beat in her own country.

Let's say the "3 mil per show" is correct in which it probably is, after U2 paying $2 million for the stage in Montreal plus $6 million in touring costs, they still walk away with $9 million net gross in just two shows.

1997 - 171mil
2001 - 143m
05/06 - 260m
09/11 - 700m

98/99 - 120m(?? - half the shows, minus 19 stadiums, boxscored $43m)
03/07 - 400m
08/09 - 279m
11/14 - 300m(expected)

Top list is U2 tour grosses. Followed by Celine.

U2 comes out ahead, but when you think for a minute about production costs it can get quite close.

Wasn't Bigger Bang or Black Ice the biggest tour in Canada? Division Bell also packed 9 Stadium shows.

My math was the "$3mil" plus around 1 million for the added night. Plus $3m for the stadium. U2 may have also had to have paid a penalty for booking the stadium in 2010 and also a delay in the real esate project. No way is it under $7mil.

well we can't sit here and say what it was exactly, we don't know..Paul M did say the tour's costs were averaging $3 million per show..so with that said, U2 has spent around $460 million on this tour including paying for the stages ($130 mil for stages plus $330 million in tour costs), thus taking in a Net Gross of somewhere around $275 million. This is a ballpark figure.

And No AC/DC and The Rolling Stones did not beat U2's Canadian numbers

They also had to write a check when they shuffled the US dates. $7 or $15mil.

I find this number curious since SLC grossed $3.03m and Istanbul did $3.7m. That's some low margains.

yeah a couple of shows probably took a hit, but it doesnt matter..all you have to do is take the tour's average gross per show which is currently $6,732,621...right? Subtract that by $3,000,000 which equals $3,732,621...multiply that by 110 shows which comes out to $410,588,310 then subtract the stage cost of $130 million and you have $280,588,310. I read that they were making an average of $40 per person at every show on merchandise...so they have definitely Net Grossed over $300 million.

The openers probably cost 7-8mil over the course of the tour. BEP/JZ/MUSE certainly ain't free but most of the others would have been in the 5-figures.

Perhaps, but its speculation..the only thing we do know is Paul M as been quoted saying the tour costs an average of $3 million per show, or $750,000 per day while the stages or moving and whether they are playing a show or not. All costs are included in these figures...logistics, paying openers, Live Nation, renting the stadiums, etc, etc.

The tour did $280 mil on merch???

I was thinking closer to $20-25/head.

Like I said I read that somewhere I can't prove that officially, but even if they did make $40 per head, I'm sure they spent half of that buying the merchandise, and paying the crew to sell them. So it would be way less than $280 million. Ask Maoil on that one he might know better than me..:)
