11/13/01, 4 p.m. ET) -- J Records recording artist Alicia Keys leads the nominees for the 29th annual American Music Awards, earning five nods including pop/rock favorite female artist and favorite new artist, as well as Soul/R&B favorite female artist, favorite new artist and favorite album for her Songs In A Minor.
The nominations were announced on Tuesday (November 13) by the show's executive producer, Dick Clark, with help from Jewel and Sean "P. Diddy" Combs.
Jewel offered her thoughts on Keys's multiple nominations. "Alicia really deserves it. I think she's very talented, I think she's a great musician, as well as a great singer, and it's nice to see people that write songs doing well," she said.
There were 10 artists that received two nominations each. They include *NSYNC, Destiny's Child, Dave Matthews Band, Aaliyah, Janet Jackson, Brooks & Dunn, Tim McGraw, Shaggy, R. Kelly, and Lonestar. In total, 21 AMAs will be presented during a three-hour special on the ABC Television Network on January 9 starting at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The ceremony will be telecast from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
Winners of the annual American Music Awards are selected by the public via a national sampling of approximately 20,000 people that were sent ballots by the National Family Opinion Inc. firm under the supervision of Broadcast Research and Consulting Inc. Names of the nominees on the ballots were compiled from data supplied by the music industry trade publication, Radio & Records, and the Soundscan Inc. management information system.
This year, the first-ever Coca-Cola New Music Award will be presented at the AMAs. A search was conducted to find the best unsigned band or artist in America, and one of three finalists will be given the chance to perform live on this year's AMA telecast. The three finalists are: Carbon Leaf from Richmond, Virginia; Live Honey from New York City; and Yo, Flaco! from Denver.
The annual Award Of Merit, for "outstanding contributions to the musical entertainment of the American public," will also be presented during the AMA telecast. Recent winners of this award include Billy Joel, Gloria Estefan, and Janet Jackson, among others.
