CATHY MEILS

(Variety) PRAGUE It's not only movies that are latching onto the current comicbook craze.

VBW, the musical production company otherwise known as the United Stages of Vienna, will premiere a musical adaptation of cult fave film "Barbarella" on March 11.

Producer Rudi Klausnitzer, former general director for VBW, signed the Eurythmics' Dave Stewart to compose music for the show, billed as "the sexy space musical." Klausnitzer said, " 'Barbarella' is the ideal story for a rock-oriented musical. Dave Stewart is one of the most creative and innovative guys in the music business."

Stewart, a self-described 1960s movie fan, said in a statement he was persuaded to create the music when Klausnitzer showed him a copy of the original 1962 "sex(y) ... and kitsch sci-fi" comicbook. Stewart said he was composing "weird and wonderful music" that incorporated a "camp-rock style."

VBW general director Franz Haeussler and Klausnitzer extended the show's rock credentials by bringing together a team of leading designers from the field. They include set designer Mark Fisher (Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, U2), House of Fields costumers Patricai Fields and David Dalrymple (Britney Spears, "Sex and the City"), and lighting designer Willie Williams (U2, R.E.M.).

Production will be helmed by Vienna-based director-choreographer Kim Duddy, who earned kudos for her transformation of "Hair" into a 21st-century musical for VBW.

Winning the title role after a search that stretched across Europe is Nina Proll, who was named a Shooting Star at the 2000 Berlin Film Festival.

The musical, which will run at the centrally located Raimund Theater, marks a change of pace from the current 10th-anniversary revival of VBW's "Elisabeth" at the historical Theater an der Wien. That tuner, based on the life of the beloved Austrian empress affectionately known as Sissy, has been drawing sell-out crowds. Now booked through April, "Elisabeth" looks likely to be extended beyond its current one-year run, to the end of 2004.
