Competition opens for Dublin Tower designs
November 12, 2002
(12:16) An open competition was launched today to design a Dublin tower which will include an exclusive recording studio for the rock band, U2.
The landmark tower, sixty metres in height, will be built alongside the River Liffey in Dublin's Docklands.
U2 has been in discussion with the Docklands Development Authority on this project since last year when the Authority decided to buy the band's current recording studio at Hanover Quay.
The site is needed to allow public amenity works related to the Grand Canal Harbour development.
Today's announcement will allow architects from Ireland and overseas to compete for the design of a new tower. The tower will provide offices, a bar and restaurant, and two floors devoted to a recording studio for U2.
The band will nominate one of its members to serve on the judging panel for the tower designs.
