Bono Says Mandela Song Will Appear On AIDS Benefit Album
(1/23/03, 6 p.m. ET) -- U2's Bono says a song he co-wrote for the canceled South Africa AIDS benefit concert that would have been hosted by Nelson Mandela will now end up on an album due in the fall.
While backstage at Sunday's (January 19) Golden Globes Awards, Bono discussed the song. "Yeah, I wrote a song with Joe Strummer--Edge played on it. Joe Strummer's dead now. He was the great progenitor of the Clash, a great group from the '70s and the '80s. It's a song...It's Nelson Mandela's prison number, and we're working on that. It will be on an AIDS emergency album that's coming out in the fall."
U2's "The Hands That Built America," from director Martin Scorsese's Gangs Of New York, won a Golden Globe from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as best original song from a film. The track also appears on the band's latest hits collection, The Best Of 1990-2000.
