Alice In chains over Pearl Jam of Nirvana?

No.

This is how a band goes from underrated to overrated.

I'm struggling to find words for how thoroughly I disagree that Pearl Jam is a better band than Alice in Chains.

Pearl Jam and Pavement are the two bands whose worship around here I will never understand.

i could never hear another one of the major nirvana hits again, and die a happy person. perfect example of a band that's just been so overplayed that i never even want to listen to the other non-played-to-death songs that i still enjoy.

except for sliver. sliver is pretty much one of my favorite songs ever.

Anyone heard this new Fucked Up album? I'm not a huge fan of the vocals, but I'm enjoying it overall, very much. I always like to have one of these types of albums in my corner every year and Cloud Nothings let me down, so...

No, but I don't plan to. I still can't figure out how they became the hipster punk aggressive music band of choice.

Not sure why it's confounding to you that a critic's darling and huge indie rock infkuence would have such an enthusiastic following among people here who are really into music.

Or the same for a band who has been around for 25 years and has a great reputation for live shows (in terms of length and variety) and relationship with their fans.

If you don't like the music that's taste but it shouldn't be so hard to fathom the support.

So by that logic, we should all love Dave Matthews Band as well. Continued existence isn't synonymous with quality.

No one is saying you "should" like anything. But a false equivalence regardless. DMB was never cool. Pearl Jam was, then they weren't, and made a clear attempt to steer away from any mainstream pandering. They'll never have "indie cred" but even among the Pitchfork crowd there tends to at least be a begrudging respect.

Yes, I'm a big fan of this album. Right now it would make my year end list.

I think right now it's gonna fall in the top 20, but right outside that coveted top 15 spot. Haven't finished it yet, got four tracks in and then had to step out of the office for a moment. Finishing it up now and I am enjoying it just as much.

i couldn't care less about widespread influence or critical consensus, album sales or whatever other measure of mass validation for a band being objectively good. it's not an objective thing, it's a fucking opinion. regarding pearl jam, i like the music. i like it a lot, different albums and different songs for a variety of reasons. if you don't, well, it's your loss. you probably like a more than a few bands in which i see no remotely redeeming musical qualities. in that way, it sucks to be you (the editorial you, it might not totally suck to be iyup. dude travels a lot and drinks plenty of whiskey. that's not sucky. and martha is awesome, so it doesn't suck to be her either. they're both just missing out a little).

i don't see how you can't afford some level of respect to a band who approaches the live show the way they do, though. it's too easy for a band of 20+ years to phone it in on a 1.5-1.75 hr setlist of greatest hits (sort of like some other band often mentioned here), which they don't do at all.

aside from one or two songs, i don't care much about pavement.

Guys, this new (brand new) Eno/Hyde thing is the real deal. Like maybe the best thing I've heard this year. The songs are mostly long, but they build and build and at least half really convey legitimate emotion. The opener Return is epic guitar drone, DBA sounds like a My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts outtake, Time To Waste It has a nice female vocal and musically sounds like a laid-back Mysterious Ways. Eno finally makes a noticeable vocal appearance on Lilac which is a towering centerpiece.

Really impressed by Hyde's guitar work--strange that he's known for his vocal work and he's virtually absent on this album in that regard.

But yeah, this sounds fresh and like Eno's glory days at the same time.

i'd say all 3 madball albums (none of which clock in at over a half hour) that i just listened to do that for me much better than fucking pink moon.

How nice for you!

 Great album.

Because they're neither especially punk, nor especially aggressive anymore. They're pretty easy to get into.

Well that's some exciting hype. I'm down.

I saw them for free last year and enjoyed myself. Granted, I think Found Out About You is one of the more underrated singles of the 90s.

I was going to do some impromptu GAF-esque covers for you tonight but my power is out and I am hunting for ways to put my brother's medication somewhere cool.

You had me at the Fela reference, but this made me go to itunes to sample it and I think I'll be going to Fingerprints tomorrow between laundry loads to pick this up. It'll sound good on the ipod on the plane.

Make sure to listen on headphones. My first couple spins were in the car, but there's a LOT going on. Obvs, it's Eno.

But hearing all the details makes me love it even more. First track Return is out of this fucking world. And it's not really outside U2's wheelhouse; if they were truly "lost in the music" and willing to explore something else with Eno they totally could be doing something like this.

The vinyl has 2 extra tracks, BTW.

There was an interview on one Australian radio station (JJ, Cobbler) with Jimi's ex-girlfriend who said she watched the film and was very disappointed by how they portrayed her and Jimi, and that some of the events portrayed in the film never happened. Make of it what you will.

His family have been against it from the very beginning, so no surprises there. I couldn't care less, all I'm concerned about is whether or not Three Stacks will get an Oscar.
