Very good news, Ashley!

Now you can catch up on us blasting what was a decidedly underwhelming Hottest 100. Lucky you.

Congrats to Ashley, and Reggo's mum!

And zomg, I'm still reeling from shock about Gotye getting the #1 spot... Not sure I've recovered sufficiently to go to work.

... Think that excuse will fly?

You could pull a sickie by saying that you're throwing up because you had a flashback to when Big Jet Plane got to #1.

I was soooo excited the other day when I heard "Somebody that I Used to Know" on the radio. There's no reason that song shouldn't at least be a big hit on the indie station here. Hopefully they'll start playing more of him, since he's coming to town soon.

I've never understood why Aussie and Kiwi music has such a hard time cracking the US and (to a slightly lesser extent) the UK. I can understand why some other countries have thriving music scenes that don't go international due to a language barrier, but that doesn't apply at all here.

Yet if you ask anybody from another English speaking country to name an Australian band, you'll be lucky to do better than AC/DC.

Look on RYM and practically everybody's music maps are concentrated on the US and UK. Even those of many Aussies and Kiwis!

I have to say I had no clue AC/DC were Aussie until the last couple years.

But, yeah, I don't get why that is, it's not like the music isn't in English or something...

This list is telling:

Top 10 Bands From Australia

(I love that Russel Crowe responded to being on the list :lmao:)

That's just depressing!

I guess the main problem is bands from small markets for whatever reason struggle to crack larger ones. The small scale equivalent of Aussie bands not being known in the US/UK is that most New Zealand bands struggle to be well-known even in Australia. Dave Dobbyn, for instance, is a Kiwi music legend and most New Zealanders would recognise heaps of his songs ... in Australia, he's a one-hit wonder (and funnily enough, not for the song that is trotted out most in New Zealand). The Chills and The Clean never had an Australian hit. I'm not sure any Kiwi band other than Split Enz has ever sold out an Australian arena.

I suppose Canadian bands have the same problem of international obscurity as Aussie and Kiwi bands. I wonder if it really is simply a case that US and UK bands generally have the best corporate backing to get onto radio and into shops, and thus into popular consciousness.

My innards are unhappy with me today. :(

Re: the music market thing... Maybe it's like an artist breaking into commercial radio from Triple J or elsewhere... The big stations/markets won't even give an artist a chance unless practically 100% of a smaller station/market is fanatically in love with them. I'm assuming that AC/DC and INXS and whoever else were huge in Aus before they broke the US and UK... And that still doesn't explain why other bands who are/were huge here never cracked foreign markets. Unless they didn't want to spend so much time touring heavily in distant countries...? I dunno.

I'm heading for a record low post accumulation in a superthread in recent times. 10 posts in over 300!

You should all be happy.

You know, I saw a town name the other day that would have made a perfect Superthread location, and I thought of you guys. For all I know, you've already been there...what is the count now?

LemMel!! Man, I want to see a graph of my post count split by months. I think I've had 3 posts in the last 2 years before tonight.

See, now I can brag about this shirt I found in Africa (I kind of took it off a guy's back) and am about to sell on ebay. But first I made it a twitter, although it has approximately 1 follower...still I managed to tweeter and twutter to a couple journalists whom I am hoping will take note when I tell them I'm selling myself. (The tweeter twits in first person-shirt.)

giants by 13+. i'll put coin on it at the TAB.

Giants by 6, but that might just be an emotional hedge.

Vazza!! I don't hand these out often but

How's saving the world been treating you? See any fat, balding liars lately?

Hey that was a quick reply to Ian, it was supposed to quote the superbowl nonsense. But I am clearly going to have to relearn how to use this thing...
