Did Bono really say this?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I listened to the first 20 seconds of that Scott Strap cover,

and I'll back Bono up, it did indeed feel like a slap in the face and a kick in the balls!!!

-Bono told off Phil Collins on national TV circa zooropa.
-He's had some drunk episodes - didn't Bono strip naked and dance on a table in a restaurant after having too much to drink cira zootv?
-I'm sure some network heads were furious at Bono for swearing on award shows or cutting into ad time worth hundreds of thousands.
-Rogers and Hammerstein(?) lawyers successfully got to U2 after the Red Rocks release.

Maybe Alcohol was a common thread here...

I also thought Bono made a fool of himself in court during the Lola trail.
-The first was a joke, and it was not Bono mostly. Adam made the most jokes and Edge.
- You're probably thinking of the episode when he stripped down to his briefs during an interview. There was no alcohol involved. The interviewer was nervous and stiff, Bono himself said that he thought the guy would loosen up a bit if he 'imagined' Bono in his underwear.
- Only the American ones.
- ? I've not heard of this story before, care to elaborate?

And how did Bono make a fool of himself for taking back what was stolen from him? It's the Lola woman who was the fool here for trying to sell stolen stuff on ebay.

Do you have a good version of U2 doing "Mystery Girl"?

That song is called "She's a Mystery To Me". Would help to search for the right song title if you're trying to find it...

Bono probably spent 10 times the "collectable market" value in legal fees to sue over a cowboy hat. I think he even admitted on the stand that he didn't know why he was there. Still makes Lola a greedy nutjob that sucked Bono into her vortex.

The band got in trouble for using "Send in the Clowns" for under a Blood Red Sky live release without any clearance. I think they had to write a nice check and pull it from any future official release.

IFAIK, the U2 versions of "She's a Mystery Girl" are farily short acoustic versions done by Edge and Bono. not the full length Orbison version nicely recorded in the studio.

What does value matter in this case? The whole point was to put lola back in her place for stealing band property(not just the hat) in the first case and trying to sell it. The band had probably forgotten about the items already, but the fact that she was trying to make money off stolen things was the big issue. THAT is what it was about. Not the stupid hat.

Ah I did not know that, first time I hear it.

Both are actually of the same title as far as I'm aware.

I don't remember her stealing anything. It was either given to her or she ended up with the stuff - posession is 9/10th of the law. Selling some of the stuff is a legal grey area depending on her original working contract with the band.

When she needed money she went to sell it and the band got antsy. The speculation I heard was that she had a ton of wardrobe test photos the band didn't want seen publically. Let's say the tests can take hours of changing into multiple outfits and band members would good off a bit during the photos themselves with crude humour.

Spending tens of thousands in legal fees and a couple weeks of hassle, plus the courts public money, to stop a $100 hat worth 2-4 thousand on ebay for the sake of "pride" is the height of stupidity.

One thing that came to light during the trail was the fact U2 toured with a stylist on the UF tour before lola was hired. U2 actually PAID someone to give Bono the mullet and leather pants and have Edge look like...how he did.

The one part I think you are missing here is that Lola sued U2 FIRST. (From what all reports I read at the time said anyway  ) Which meant they had no choice but to be dragged into court. Probably why Bono said that, if he did say it.

U2 Bans Lola From Selling Off Presents

U2 were the first to get lawyers involved and forced Christies auction house to yank the items.

If claims to have spend $350,000, it would have been likely that u2 spent more in legal fees.

That court case was a personal grudge after her tell all book and had nothing to do with a couple hats and other wardrobe items that were kinda generic.

It's really not fair when people nitpick and dig for the mistakes that U2 have made, and then blow them hugely out of proportion. They're good guys. Everyone makes bad decisions and screws up now and then. Especially compared to many others who are watched so closely by the public as they are, they screw up relatively rarely. But they're not perfect...teasing Phil Collins or swearing or suing someone over something "silly" (or the Stapp comment in question, for that matter) does not make someone a bad person. It makes them human. For the most part, I think the boys have carried themselves with dignity and grace over the years.

And whether or not spending all that money on legal fees was stupid is an opinion. Perhaps the band did not like the idea of exploitation, similar to the scalping incident last tour. Clearly it was the principle of the matter, not that Bono wanted the stupid hat back. I think it's a fairly shared opinion that Lola is a greedy psychobitch.

Who gives a fuck, no one outside of PLEBA even paid attention.

Bono could strip naked for me. Just don't tell my husband.

I only remember Bono saying the f word on one show, in America. None of us cared. Other than, the FCC and a few reporters who wanted people to watch their boring ass shows. Made a big deal of it.

Little kids don't even watch the Golden Globe Awards. They are usually in bed, because they have school the next day.

I thought is was Lola who proceeded with the court hearings. Perhaps, as a way of advertising her book?

Who gives a fuck, no one outside of PLEBA even paid attention.

Exactly.....and what did she tell. That Bono is five foot seven instead of eight?

Who cares! Even the gals at Pleba thought she was a joke.

I'll share a secret.....I'm only five foot four and a half. :D

Well said......:applaud:

I like Bono's earthy sense of humor!

In fact, I like everyone who has a good sense of humor. Laughter is wonderful!

Nerd alert:

For the record, Stephen Sondheim wrote Send In the Clowns, not Rogers & Hammerstein.

:nerd:

Bono wrote and produced this song. For Roy Obrbison. I have the cd. It is one of my favorites from Roy's Mystery Girl.

Peter,

I'll retract this statement. It was sarcastic. I got caught up in the moment.

I wasn't posting here in 2003 and I haven't read Ms. Cashman's book. I also, wasn't keeping up with the Lola vs. Bono thing, either. So sure, I could be wrong about who started the court battles.

But, I would like to ask you a question?

If you dislike Bono/U2 why post here? I am not trying to be disrespectful. Just curious.

Fans that have been around for over a decade bicker frequently, mostly about one era being better than another. I am a fan and the band are good people from an overwhelming number of reports. Personally I love the music, but can't listen to Bono talk anymore.

The idea that they have been perfect human beings for every moment of their 50 years is very "rose coloured glasses". I'd actually be amused if Bono chewed out Scott Stapp. Reminds of the story of Miley Cyrus approaching Radiohead to compliment their work only to get a tersely worded cold shoulder. Bono's been chewed out by Bob Dylan at least 3 times that is publically known. I've heard a couple u2 road crew stories being asked to do a bit much. I've heard some world renowned Africa experts that DESPISE what Bono is attempting in Africa, calling it counterproductive and opportunistic.

I found the Cashman saga to be a fascinating glimpse into u2 world not seen elsewhere. Something about her seemed to have brought out Bono's "Sinatra streak". Both sides legal bills plus public money probably amounted to close to a million dollars - all over $3,000 of stage attire from 15 years ago. I'm surprised it wasn't more a PR issue for "Mr. Africa", unfair as it may be. It was personal rather than business. I'm not even sure that cowboy hat is even that "iconic" anyways.

If it wasn't a genuine case it wouldn't have seen the inside of a courtroom. U2 didn't say anything during the 15 years she had the stuff in her posession, didn't contact her directly during the auction, didn't settle the case to avoid paying 10+ times as much in court, nor do u2 have any guarantee she won't write another book. Lola even mentioned that Bono wouldn't even make eye contact in court. Petty stuff. Refreshing to see to those who think Bono is full of himself.

As for the claim she's psychobitch/only PLEBANS should care/sell her book:
There's no quesiton she behaved like a jilted lover, but Bono got sucked into her vortex. Most of the U2 coverage of the case was slanted towards U2. A court case to sell books would have been highly cost prohibitive. Remember she was an absolute insider during the JT tour and even lived at Bono's home for a period!!

I just take issue when stuff like this is written:

There's a couple isolated incidents on the contrary and that's OK.

Why do you take issue with it, that's rather silly.

Actually your isolated incidents don't actually contradict what he said...

Do you have incidents of Bono interacting with celebrities and say he's an ass?

Your incidents weren't even all that factually true...

I don't think anyone in here think Bono or anyone else in the band is an actual saint. But you have to admit that for as many asshole rock stars there are out there it's nice to have one that doesn't have a reputation for being a jerk. In fact there are even stories out there about people who were vocal about not liking U2 but admitting that Bono was very charming in person. Hell even Henry Rollins praised Bono's work in Africa and he's probably Bono's most vocal hater...

Thanks Peter, for your reply. I love their music too. Edge is actually my favorite member. I love the way he plays, using an echo, delay effect. It is absolutely beautiful on "Streets."

My appreciation of Edge gained immeasurably the last couple years and the trio 360 gigs I attended.

Check out the bootleg of mostly soundboard recordings of various soundchecks without Bono present. Fascinating stuff that will reinvigorate any cynical U2 fan. PLEASE and UTEOTW sound unbelievable.

I remember mention of Bob Dylan avoiding Bono for a couple years maybe a decade ago. Not sure I've seen them pictured together since.

The George Harrison back and forth during Popmart was a bit weird.

Thanks! Mine has too.

I also want to retract my three back to back post on the previous page. I was trying to be funny. But, re-reading them. They were sarcastic.

HENRY ROLLINS Questions Timing Of U2 Singer BONO's Activism - Jan. 8, 2003
Punk rock icon Henry Rollins recently questioned U2 activist frontman Bono's motives in getting involved in so many causes, implying in no uncertain terms that the Irish singer may be using his high-profile involvement in politics to promote the group's current "greatest hits" album.

"I think if the guy is doing something, it's better than nothing — but I just wonder if he's following through," the ex-BLACK FLAG frontman told Britain's Sunday Mirror.

Although Rollins is in no way a U2 fan, he respects Bono's convictions. "I hate this guy's music, but I like the idea of absolving Third World debt, because otherwise these people are going to die," he said. "So if he's using all that rock-star power, well, right on. Like he's Mr. Africa Third World Debt Guy, which is a huge issue, but now, he's Mr. AIDS Guy. Well, wait a minute, how did you go from Third World debt to AIDS?"

Rollins is skeptical about the timing of the activism as well, suggesting to the Mirror, "Is this a crusade or really good promo for U2's new 'Greatest Hits' album? I have to think his heart's in the right place. I think he's a boring singer, but I don't think he's a bad man."

Liam Gallagher went after U2 twice this year with fairly scathing comments. once about having "no style" and the other saying he's never met a U2 fan.

While he's playing the UK music press game for his forgettable side project, the comments remain the same.

Well you kinda proved my point here. Rollins states he respects his convictions but badmouth's him at the same time, has Rollins ever admitted to meeting Bono? No, he just hates the band.

Liam Gallagher went after U2 twice this year with fairly scathing comments. once about having "no style" and the other saying he's never met a U2 fan.

While he's playing the UK music press game for his forgettable side project, the comments remain the same.

Yes, those are very scathing remarks about Bono himself aren't they? Even if you consider your source, Liam who doesn't say anything nice about anyone but the Beatles or himself, still doesn't say anything about Bono himself...

Did you even read my post?

And what was Dylan's reasons? Once again Harrison spoke of U2's music, not Bono.

Rollins ever admitted to meeting Bono?

In a 1992 NME interview, Rollins called Bono, "the most pompous, pretentious, unbelievably crass guy I have ever encountered in music."

"Look at a group like U2. Bono and his band are so egocentric. The more you jump around, the bigger your hat is, the more people listen to your music."
George Harrison

Bono blurted to the press something Dylan told him in confidence.
