Daniel Lanois interviewed on 102.1 The Edge

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Well, if the album has to be out in early 2009, they should be finishing it around now.

Mixing for normal bands is fairly quick, but U2 often like to continue recording while mixing (heck, they even continue recording while mastering!). I bet that’s why Lanois says it’s “a good beginning of the end”.

I would bet these Lanois mixes are an attempt at giving the album a coherent sound, perhaps he is dealing with the last few songs the band have written, I don’t know. I suppose after that the band will have a big meeting to decide whether the album is there or not.

On the on-line clip linked he does not mention Eno or the band having enough songs, I suppose he said that in a different part of the interview. I love the idea of Lanois and Eno mixing, they have a lot of personality and their sound is quite unique. For instance I love the mix on “when I look at the world” on ATYCLB.

:hmm:Hmm... when I read 'half the album was being mixed', the first thing that I thought was that the other half was already mixed, and that the band was satisfied with at least half the material which they had intended to put out.. perhaps Lanois is just mixing the new stuff they've put together over the past few weeks...?

Yes, that sounds likely, actually.

I think they want to avoid the "different sounds brought by different producers" problem on HTDAB that Bono complained about.

Anyway, we'll know for sure when the liner notes come out!

Guys; U2.com recently said they were making more songs

U2.com!

Bono probably said that comment in June; and it just took U2.com that long to report it. So it wouldn't surprise me if Bono's still 2009 comment was a tad out of date

I posted this over in PLEBA but as it relates to new music, I figured why not here....

I saw Bono here at the U.N. yesterday and actually told him that the band was killing us and needed to give us a non-album single with some b-sides, something to tide us over. 4 years was too long.

He agreed and said that they had thought about releasing some demos or a single before the new album and then he turned and said 'We still might."

Take it for what its worth, but I did tell him that if he did that, I would give each of them a dollar or some cookies.

He laughed and said 'Sounds good.'

Everyone loves cookies.

I wonder do Lanois's comments have anything to do with the practice of working 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off (or whatever they said it was)? Thus if it was to take a month to mix a final album, you might get half of it done in 2 weeks (as he said) and then do the rest the following month.

Alternatively, this could be something of a return to the idea mentioned by Steve Averill last year, which was to make two albums - one a traditional U2 record, the other Passengers Part II or something of that ilk. Then perhaps both could be released in 2009, but as separate projects.

The idea of putting out demos sounds like a mad-cap Bono idea alright (i.e. one that will never come to fruition), but fair dues Rafiennes for having the gumption to ask him about the new record in such a setting. Good on ya.

^^^Rafiennes way to ask Bono point blank.

If Danny boy is mixing now the album should pretty much be done. This delay might have something to do with Bono's appereances/meetings he's handling right now. Hard to promote a new album with your band when you have to be somewhere else.

I think U2 is going to enjoy this Nov/Dec holiday and then the U2 beast will be back with a single in January, promotion, and the album will drop in the early half of March.

P.S.

Bono looks good.

Raf, i can just imagine you cornering Bono and demanding songs :applaud::lol:

The single idea sounds good

One from another angle -- really looks like I'm giving him a talking to!

When in fact I was probably piddling on the floor with glee

When is a big Mercy fan going to talk to someone in the band and tell them not to let this masterpiece go unreleased?

Good work, though.

Lanois is mixing half and Eno is doing the other half. Thus we have got a double album. (I wish).

They should just pull a Red Hot Chili Pepper's Stadium Arcadium. Bono's whole thing about nobody having time these days for long albums is bullshit. SA, a double disc mind you, was a huge hit in the supossedly hectic 21st century.

On the topic of a non-album single/ demos/ b-sides/ whatever pre-album - I would LOVE that. It's a little too ballsy for U2 at this point, but I would love to eat crow on that one.

What I think could be a strong possibility is when the first single is released in December or so, they release a digital EP/ Maxi-Single/ 10" vinyl/ triple 8-track/ etc. with the single, probably a shitty remix or two, and some (3-4 would be nice) REAL b-sides. I have a strong feeling we'll be getting some great b-sides with this album's singles.

"listen ya little shit... put out a fucking album... or else. get it? see what i did there? no you didn't, 'cause you're stupid."

:lmao:

But look at the guy in the background in blue with the glasses hanging around his neck....

That guy looks so zeroed in on Bono like he's been following him and weaving through crowds for an hour just to get a clear line of sight...now he's got it, and he ain't leavin' anytime soon! :giggle:

I like the guy to my right...he looks like he's thinking

"I'm...I'm feeling manlove...for the first time in my life...I understand it now...I...love...Bono...so much...God it hurts...must...get away..."

Yet pretty much every review I've seen said SA would be better off as a single album.

True; U2 will not make this mistake. If they have enough good material for 2 albums, then there will be separate releases.

Yet pretty much every review I've seen said SA would be better off as a single album.

those reviewers are way off, and they seem to be the exact people bono is citing as having no time for a double album. those critics have to review records by the truckload.

non-critics on the other hand, we can listen to as much music as we like and don't have to write about it. but let my try my hand at it. here we go:

"SA is amazing, and would be a much lesser album if cut in half."

there. that's my review. it would probably be the coolest thing U2 could do at this point to take a cue from SA and release a double album. Remember when we heard "all the rockers" were trimmed from HTDAAB? how nice would it be if U2 didn't overanalyze it or force themselves to cut it down to 11 songs this time round? 4 years is too long. I want 2 x 16 songs!~

I wouldn't want U2 to release a double album. That would use up a lot of their songs that they have finished, and then who knows how long we'd have to wait until the next album? That's what I would be worried about. I would like it better if they released two regular albums within a shorter time span than just one huge album. But whatever. If they did a double album followed shortly thereafter by a Zooropa-type project, that would be cool, too.

Oh no, tiny tidbits of possible development are getting me excited again...its a vicious cycle.

I think I can count on 3 or 4 fingers the amount of fans who have bothered to ask about new music when meeting the band over the last several years. Usually it's very casual and fanboyish "well I couldn't think straight..." (blah blah)

Nice fucking job dude.
