Bono: Hello hello....

Edge: Ola!

Bono: I'm at a place called Vertigo....

Edge: ????

What is Edge saying here?! This has bothered me since I first heard the song.

He is saying "Donde esta?" and directly translated it means "Where is?". So maybe in the song it's supposed to mean "Where is it?", even though you'd still have to have a word for "it" but we all know Spanish isn't U2's strong point.

SO -- the song is like a phone call:

:bono: Hello? Hello?

:edge: HI!!

:bono: I'm at a place called Vertigo...

:edge: Where is this place called Vertigo?

:bono: It's everything I wish I didn't know.....

:edge: That's not how you explain where something is....

:bono: But you, gimme something, I can feel... FEEEEL!!

:edge: Ewww, Bono! call me when you're sober.

The first word he's saying clearly begins with a C-sound, so it must be "cómo está", translated "how is it?"

That would make Vertigo some sort of phone call:

:bono: Hello, hello!
:edge: Hello!
:bono: I'm at a place called Vertigo!
:edge: What's it like there?
:bono: It's everything I wish I didn't know!

Actually, it can be translated to "Where is it?" without any artistic license. In Spanish it isn't necessary to mention I/you/he/she/it/etc. (forgot for a moment the grammatical phrase for it) as the extension of the verb automatically implies which form it is. Only when you want to emphasize it you explicitly mention it.
:)

Hey "Donde Esta" in Spanish, "Onde Estás?" in Portuguese, so means "Where are you?".

:bono: Hello, Hello
:edge: Hi!
:bono: I'm in a place called Vertigo
:edge: Where are you?
