Drowning Man has always been, and always will be, one of my favourite U2 songs. It's amazing. The way the violins come in at the start, the vocals, the emotion, oh its just so great. I think it was a nod to the future as well. As far as War goes, its one of my least listened-to U2 albums, and I find that is because I always get a bit disappointed in the second half...the first half has probably the best 5 songs on there (maybe a bit of a debate between S and THBAO).
