A bridge is a part of the song that's different musically and lyrically from the choruses and verses. You usually throw it in after the second chorus to keep things interesting. In the standard thirty-two bar form (most modern rock and pop songs have structures derived from this), this is also known as a middle eight. E.g., in "Beautiful Day," the "See the world in green and blue..." part is a bridge (and a really long one too).

Not all songs have bridges; "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," for instance, is basically all verses with a simple refrain. "Stay" is just verse, chorus, verse, chorus, verse.

Pre-choruses are also sometimes called bridges because they "bridge" the verse and the chorus. Pepokiss used the word in this way (in "City of Blinding Lights," the "And I miss you when you're not around..." part and the whoo-whoos are part of the pre-chorus). In the other sense, the "Time..." part would be the bridge. Obviously, it isn't very cut-and-dry.

interesting question!!

intro: where the streets have no name
verse: acrobat
bridge: beautiful day
chorus: one
outro: with or without you

Intro: Where the Streets Have No Name
Verse: "Every artist is a cannibal/every poet is a thief/all kill their inspiration/and sing about the grief"
Chorus: Mercy ("love hears...")
Bridge: Discotheque (that chimey guitar part after "wanna be the song..." and toward the end before the BOOM CHA's)
Outro: Until the End of the World

now put that all together as one song somehow...

Intro: Where the Streets Have No Name
Verse: "It's no secret that the stars are falling from the sky/the universe exploding cuz of one man's lie/look I gotta go, yeah I'm running out of change/there's a lot of things, if i could I'd rearrange"
Chorus: The Fly
Bridge: Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses
Outro: One

What do the "Midnight is where the day begins.." parts of Lemon count as? Verse, chorus, or reoccuring bridge? The answer is vital to my voting here...

Well then dammit it kicks ass!!!

but it's still a tough call between that, and the final bridge of One.
"You ask me to enter, but then you make me crawl, and I can't be holding on......."

Say what you like about One being overrated, overplayed etc, but that last bridge, chorus and outro is a fucking money shot.

Bono's lyrical exploits have run hot and cold through his career. And while he isn't as consistant as a Finn/Dylan/Lennon... his third verses, bridges etc at their best can rank up there.

Until The End Of The World is similar to One, where he brings ties it all together at the end.

That is true, but I'm not just talking about Bono's lyrics there. His delivery of them, the way the band all pulls together right there, the song goes up a notch - brilliant.

Best intro - Red Light
Best verse - 4th Of July
Best chorus - Promenade
Best bridge - MLK
Best outro - God Part II

Intro: Where the Streets Have no Name
