Still More On The Fate Of 'Arrested Development': Bateman Speaks

What's the best way for fans of beloved, perpetually limbo-occupying series Arrested Development to get news about the show's fate? Bump into star Jason Bateman on the street in Toronto and just ask him what the hell is going on with the rumored Showtime-sponsored resurrection.Television Without Pity eminence Glark relates his encounter with Bateman on the site's AD message board:

"Here are the things I remember (and he gave full blessing to post the info as he loves the site and you guys but he's too shy and too cute to post on the boards):
- Mitch loves you guys and it was nice to see people getting the show and enjoying the show especially at times when network directives were "make the show 30% dumber"

- Showtime has picked up the show for 2 years at 12 episodes a year (maybe it was 13) with a third year option

- The ball is in Mitch's court and Jason said Mitch will be making that decision within the next 24-48 hours though I don't know if that means we'll know about it at that time or not"

This report was posted yesterday, so despondent, anxious AD faithful may have only one more day to savor the exquisite torture of uncertainty that defines their fandom, then finally decide whether it's time to torch their replica frozen banana stands and make a clean break with their turbulent past.

I think all Mitch needs is a squirt of frosting down his throat

Hurwitz takes a hike
'Arrested' creator bails as showrunner

By JOSEF ADALIAN

'Arrested Development' was working on a move to Showtime, but the exit of creator Mitch Hurwitz puts the show's future in doubt.

"Arrested Development" creator Mitch Hurwitz says he will not be continuing with the series, throwing a major -- likely fatal -- monkey wrench into attempts to keep the Emmy-winning laffer alive for a fourth season.

Series producers 20th Century Fox TV and Imagine Television had agreed on a deal to move "Arrested," previously on Fox, to Showtime -- assuming Hurwitz was willing to come back. In the end, however, a mix of creative and financial concerns has prompted Hurwitz to move on.

"The fans have been so ardent in their devotion and in return ... I've given everything I can to the show in order to try to live up to their expectations," Hurwitz told Daily Variety on Monday in a telephone interview from Gotham. "I finally reached a point where I felt I couldn't continue to deliver that on a weekly basis."

Nonetheless, Hurwitz said he put off making a final decision on his involvement so Showtime and 20th could talk about a possible deal.

"Of course, if there was enough money in it, I would have happily abandoned the fans' need for quality. But as it turns out, there wasn't," he said.

Indeed, Hurwitz and 20th have long been at odds over finances, sparring over everything from the show's budget to Hurwitz's own compensation. The two sides were unable to come to terms on an overall deal last year, and while creative concerns were clearly at play in Hurwitz's decision, coin may have been a key factor, insiders said.

Hurwitz said he had briefed most of the show's cast about his decision, as well as some of the writers. He also talked with exec producer-narrator Ron Howard, who asked Hurwitz if he would be willing to continue as a consultant on "Arrested" should 20th and Imagine find a network willing to continue the skein without Hurwitz.

"I said I'd be happy to do that, but that as showrunner, I've gone as far as I can go," he said.

Showtime entertainment topper Bob Greenblatt made it clear in January that Hurwitz's participation in the show was essential to a deal (Daily Variety, Jan. 20). With Hurwitz out of the equation, Showtime is no longer a viable home for "Arrested," insiders said.

It doesn't help that one of Hurwitz's key deputies, exec producer Jim Valleley, also says he won't do the show without his boss. "We couldn't do the show without Mitch Hurwitz, and I wouldn't want to be the guy who tried," Vallely said, who called the apparent end of the show "heartbreaking."

Hurwitz said he had lunch with Showtime entertainment chief Bob Greenblatt even though he was leaning against continuing with the show. "He was actually very persuasive in telling me how much he believed in the show. I walked away thinking, 'Maybe,' " Hurwitz said.

Despite word of tension between Hurwitz and 20th, scribe said the studio and its sister net deserve credit for having produced and aired three seasons of the show.

"I can honestly say I'm appreciative. They put a lot of money into this, and I put a lot of my life into this," he said.

He also hinted that while "Arrested" may have run its course as a TV show as far as he's concerned, he would be interested in reviving the franchise as a feature film.

Reps for 20th and Showtime declined comment. One person familiar with the studio's thinking, however, said fans of the show shouldn't write an obit for "Arrested" just yet, noting 20th is the studio that revived "Family Guy."

:sigh:

I don't see why the show would be any different if all of the writers, crew and cast were the same and Hurwitz was just a consultant

in this week's tv guide :(

Arrested Development, RIP?
Emmy-winning comedy Arrested Development won't be moving to Showtime after all. The cable network was close to picking up the series from Fox, but creator Mitch Hurwitz decided he had nothing more to give the Bluth family creatively.

maybe Hurtwitz is in a funk now and will have some grand epiphany for the show.

atleast I hope so.

TV Guide is just feeding false hope. It's highly unlikely the show will return, with or without a new head writer. Jeffrey Tambor signed up for a new show on NBC, so he's commited to that for the 2006/2007 TV season (unless it fails). I'm pretty sure a couple of the other cast members have new shows and/or movies under their belts too.

Will Arnett has a good chunk of movies on his IMDb.com page that are either in pre-production or filming.

thats such sad news

taste my tears....taste my sadness michael.

AD was the funniest american show i've ever seen in my life. Every episode was absolutely hysterical! The only blotch on its whole record was the 'Rita' storyline :| but other then that, magical.

Jessica Walter and David Cross are LMAO! Give them emmys!!

He can just stand there and make me laugh, and I die everytime I see Mrs. Featherbottom fall onto the coffee table.

I still can't get over you liking this show

Do tell, IWB! Favorite/least favorite characters? If you hate ______, you're pretty much dead to me.

Yesssss. Much, much

for the Dr. House vanity plate!

i was pretty convinced i hated it. i'm not going to change my mind about scrubs sucking, though. i don't actually hate any of the characters, which is also strange in itself.

i think season 2 was funnier than season 1.

Just another testament to how fucking amazing that ensemble cast was

So I take it this means you don't hate Lucille? Gottage doesn't like Lucille and that makes me a sad Bee. Lucille is so deliciously evil and manipulative. What's not to love?!

Season 1 and 2 are pretty much tied for my favorite. Season 3 was good, but it didn't quite live up to the first two seasons. The series finale was brilliant though.

Man, now I feel like having a marathon viewing of the entire series.

no, i don't even hate lucille. that character shouldn't be as funny as she is, but she's hilariously the world's bitchiest mother.

i'll get to the series finale soon enough. everything has been downloaded, so it's just a matter of watching it. i've got a lot of work to do, so it's prime procrastination stuff.

do iiiit.

Oh, IWB

No AD until finals are over :grumpy:
I'll just take joy in the fact that it'll be a glorious pay-off when it's alllll over. Not that this is stopping me from watching a couple of episodes in the meantime :shh:

I wonder how Season 2 and 3 would've been w/ full 22 episode seasons

(at Career Night at my school. the local FOX TV station VP was there, and I asked him "how many episodes does it take for a show to be syndicated?", and he said "about 55-56", and AD has 53 :grumpy: )
