Adamswildhoney...yeah, it's an important one. Remember, ladies of PLEBA, if you are interested, feel free to cut and paste the letter I wrote to O'Neill to gently encourage him to do the right thing. :) (It's in Everything You Know Is Wrong..."Did you Write O'Neill yet" is thread title.) Let me know and I'll add you to the the Angles. :)

Here's the link ... it was moved to Free Your Mind (which is probably why the link doesn't work).

Still didn't work. :( I'll try the FYM forum directly. Thanks!

Also, I've updated the Angels' site (link below) to welcome Boston Anne, Jessica Anne and LCK (from Zootopia-- who will be beating us if they keep up this rate of calling/emailing, by the way. :D ;) ). Check it out in my sig if you'd like.

awww....thank you! :D i will look for my name on the list. I have already sent letters to my state senators and will send more to Pres. Bush and call Sec. O'Neill.

ladies and gents, incase some of you are not subscribed to receive emails from www.stopglobalaids.org, here is the information that they emailed today:

You are getting this message because President Bush and Secretary
O'Neill are making key decisions on global AIDS as they prepare for
the G7 meeting in Canada. Let's make sure Bush and O'Neill know we
are watching. Please join in our mass email action now by REPLYING to
this message and SENDING it -- the letter below will be automatically
emailed to President Bush on your behalf.

PLUS, PARTICIPATE WITH ACTIVISTS ACROSS THE USA IN NATIONAL CALL-IN
DAY TO SAY "DROP THE DEBT TO FIGHT AIDS" - sponsored by our Partner,
Jubilee USA Network

CHECK OUT THESE DETAILS ==> On June 12th and 13th people all across
the country who are concerned about the global AIDS crisis will call
the office of US Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill. Together we are
telling O'Neill to support debt cancellation for impoverished
countries at the G8 Finance Ministers Meeting this weekend in
Halifax, Canada. With everyone calling him he's bound to get the
message!

SO, LET'S MAKE HIS PHONE RING OFF THE HOOK! CALL: 202-622-0190

IT'S EASY AND WILL ONLY TAKE A MINUTE - YOU *DON'T* HAVE TO BE AN
EXPERT

Just tell the operator that you want to:

- Welcome Secretary O'Neill back from Africa and let him know that the
American people are behind him supporting debt cancellation for
impoverished countries to help them deal with AIDS and other crises.

- Ask him to use his influence at the G8 Finance Ministers meeting to
push for definitive debt cancellation without harmful World Bank and
IMF conditions.

A LITTLE BACKGROUND:

Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. Paul O'Neill just returned from a
highly publicized tour of four African nations with rock star, Bono.
He said in a speech last week that his tour of AIDS clinics, schools
and development projects in Uganda, Ethiopia, Ghana and South Africa
was the "the most intense 12 days I've ever experienced." Now, as he
gets ready for this important meeting in Canada we need to encourage
him to take the next step by supporting debt cancellation for all
impoverished countries.

Let's review the facts:

Average annual debt payments by countries that have begun to receive
some debt relief are being reduced by just 27 percent. That leaves
most of them still spending more repaying debts than they currently
spend on fighting AIDS and providing basic healthcare.

We could do so much more to lift the burden of debt and really help
people. Cameroon, Uganda, Malawi, and Guyana have all used partial
debt relief to help finance AIDS prevention and care programs, saving
lives and easing suffering.

----

This letter will be sent to President Bush when you hit the reply
button:

Dear President Bush:

I am concerned that your policies on global AIDS and international
debt do not go far enough to have a real impact. I urge you to use
the upcoming G7 Summit to make firm commitments to provide debt
cancellation to countries impacted by AIDS and other crises. And, I
urge you to provide the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria
with the resources it needs to fight AIDS.

Mr. President, your proposals on debt relief have been inadequate,
and I urge you to go further. Over half of African countries continue
to spend more on servicing old debts than health care. Also, many
countries' debt relief has been held up until they comply with harsh
and counter-productive economic requirements from the World Bank and
IMF.

In addition, the Global Fund needs resources NOW to meet the
challenge of AIDS. The US should contribute at least $1.2 billion to
the Fund, NOW, to finance basic prevention, treatment and care.
Waiting to provide these resources until 2004, or focusing them too
narrowly on stopping mother-to-child transmission of the virus, is
simply not acceptable.

Your delay in taking forceful, meaningful action on these issues is
costing lives. It will undermine achievement of the Millennium
Development Goals and condemn millions to needless suffering and
death.

Please keep me informed of your deliberations on this urgent matter.

this has nothing to do with the fight of AIDS in Africa rather than the fight of AIDS in Atlanta. My best friend is a public health educator for a local metro Atlanta clinic. She was recently interviewed for a local paper here in Atlanta about the AIDS problem in a local Atlanta county, the statistics are scary and the problem is very real. I am proud of my friend for the interview she gave and also proud of the work that she is doing for the prevention and education of AIDS awareness.

I have forwarded her many of the links that have been sited through Bono and have also forwarded her the articles of Sen. O'Neill and Bono's trip. She has been very appreciative of my support and uses the information and links often within her job.

Her involvement with AIDS awareness has made me want to increase the awareness of AIDS not only in Africa but also close to home. I passed around her article in the office today and everyone was shocked at the statistics of HIV positive patients living in this local Atlanta town. It has made everyone here appreciate their lives and take a better look at the lifestyles we all live.

I totally agree MVD ... As much as I am an advocate for helping theose affected by AIDS in Africa, I believe we also have to remember those in our own back yards. While in America, we are very lucky to have access to a higher standard of care that exists in Africa, there are hundreds of people in the cities of America who because of poverty and other socio-economic barriers that do do get teh help they need.

There are often state or city based organizations in your hometown where you can volunteer your time--these agencies provide much needed treatment programs for those who do not have insurance or cannot affortd proper care; these agencies also raise money for research and help tpo raise awareness of AIDS on a local level.

It often seems that the global AIDS epidemic is out of control and that there is little we can do to stop it. By volunteering locally, you may mak a difference in the life of just one person. Helping one person may not seem like a lot, but to that one person you are a superhero.

Think globally, act locally.

[color=royal blue]At my high school it was a requirement to do a certain number of Christian service hours each quarter as part of the religious studies department....You get used to it. Not like becoming numb to the fact that people around here take a lot for granted in terms of health, abilities, opportunities, and resources (because it's all about economics, seeing what resources are available and then USING them properly) but you get used to it in the sense that that kind of thinking and action becomes part of your life.

I am rebelling against the idea that the world is the way the world is and there's not a damned thing I can do about it. So I'm trying to do some damned thing.

OK that's my rant of the day. I thank ye.

Jess, think of it this way, too. How many MILLIONS of us are in the US? If we each can save a life or two....and that's just the US!

Guys, we're almost at 30! If we get there, I'm sooooo throwinga plebafest. :D
