I heard about that Baby. How awful! Bringing a little baby to a concert! I mean that's just awful! Some people are crazy! Did it not occur to this woman that her baby's hearing might seriously be affected.

Lila64 how well did the earplugs work for your daughter? Were they the sqwishy kind that you put in the ear?

I tried to find the ones that people mentioned in the earplug thread. You don't find those at the regular drugstores and such. I ended up getting the only kind they had at this music/instrument store. They were Hearos. I don't know if they make more than one size. They fit me fine (I used for D.Marley), but they may have been a little big for my daughter, though she said she still used them for both Marley and U2. Always better to be safe than sorry. I don't know how well the ones from RiteAid or Sav-On/Longs work, or if they work at all. I would try out whatever ones you end up buying BEFORE the show. Practice putting them in just to be on the safe side. If there's a problem you can still purchase others, or at least work with the ones you have. I think the cheaper kind are the kind you roll up into a ball or something. The ones I got are shaped....

Hey u2valleygirl!!
Your picture online needs to be updated - you are not the same person pictured with that baby, LOL! Much prettier!

We use swimmers wax, not those premade foam earplugs. the foam ones are too big for small ear canals and the plastic ones never work. with the wax you can make it any size and shape you want. it works great - you can get it at any sporting goods store. take as many options as you can so if one thing doesn't work you have alternatives.

Okay we played eannie meanie minney moe at the table tonight and my dad is going with me and my daughter to the concert. So anyone at Oakland 11/8 look for an old dude. a tall mommy, and a cute 6 year old on the floor. That will be us, people will probably think he is my husband and is robbing the cradle! He is more the Jimmy Buffett type so I have to make him a CD of U2. He decided he should go because we are going to ride BART and he wants us to be safe that late at night. Ahhh, he is such a good dad and grandpa. See you all in 2 weeks.

FAITHINGRACE...
So, did your 6 year old get you in the eclipse last night? i am taking my 6 year old tonight...

I ran into them inside the Ellipse on the back rail at the tip. We had our 9 and 11 yr olds, and we were granted automatic entry. Bono stopped during SYCMIOYO and read my daughter's sign, gave her a quick smile and reached out and touched her hand. She was all smiles.

Automatic entry, huh? SWEET!! What time did you get there?

So they never scanned your ticket? Did they just escort you to the wristband table? What did your daughter's sign say? I'm so happy for you and faithingrace!

There were my wife, the 2 kids and 2 other adults with us. We basically "gave" one of the kids to the other couple and they just led us all to the wristband table. I never been to a show that was so accomodating for kids - they are really stressing that this tour. They allowed my kids to sit on the back rail, which is unheard of, and had no problem with having Sarah on my shoulders various times. Its was a really great experience for them. And tonight we do it again!

Her sign said "My brother Jason was onstage in Seattle. Can I please come up tonight?"

Can you give more details like what time you got there and what was the process like. Did you get someone's attention from the U2 staff or was the whole process automatic? I'm really hoping my 12 year old nephew still looks young enough.

WOW - Very cool story. We had lined up all day, and they did scan our tickets at the table, since we were there when the doors opened (we were numbers 63-65). And they never just 'escorted' us to the wristband table. They scanned my daughter, then me, and I got the lucky scan. So I'm wondering if it was because of my scan and not the kid. Or because you came later and without the crowds and such just let you go with the kids... :hmm: I think I would have cried if the 3 of us didn't scan and they just told us to proceed to floor

Glad you had a great time and get to do it again. I'm so jealous!!! More stories tomorrow - good luck to your daughter and her sign!!!

I was in section 101 row 1 yesterday and there was only one row (A5) in front of me and the floor.

When Damian Marley had ended, the lights came on and I could overlook the entire floor.

Right in front of me was a family (father, mother and two daughters. I'd say somewhere between 12 - 14 year olds) and they obviously didn't get scanned in to ellipse nor where they given wristbands to enter.

One of the girls had both her arms amupated.
And they tried to talk to the Arena security (wearing blue), who were standing right in front of me, at the place where they check your wristband and where you walk next to the catwalk to get entry to the ellipse.
This guy just shook his head.

After a while a blond guy dressed in black, obviously part of the U2 entourage, came and gave them wristbands so they could enter the ellipse.

Everyone on the row in front of me had watched these events on fold (just like me) and they broke out in :applaud:

It made me tear up!

Hey I saw you guys there...we were right outside the ellipse right across from you. I saw Bono read her sign, and I think when Larry was walking out for "Love and Peace or Else" I saw him nod at her as he walked by her. There were lots of kids in the ellipse! I even saw one little girl asleep on her dads shoulder, it was cute. And they did seem very accomodating to the kids from what I could see.

We got there at probably 6:30 or so. It seemed a little unorganized, because there are like 10 people all kind of doing the same job, but I think it was the regular arena folks who pointed us to the ellipse table. I did point out that we had small children with us and they said OK go ahead. I think it's become common practice by now. I just don't know where they draw the line on how old is too old. I went in with the expectation that we'd be let in and was prepared to seek out someone in charge if we ran into a problem (we didn't). Not in an arrogant way, just confident that's the way it was going to work based on how its been described at other shows lately.

FYI - Jason is going to be 12 next month, but he's kinda short, and we had the advantage of having his little sister with us too. Like I said, I would just go in with the (hopeful) expectation and be ready to ask for help from someone in charge, talk about how its become common practice, tell them he won't be able to see in regular GA, etc.

Yes that little asleep girl was my daughter, here is our story as I posted in a PM to Lila 64

Worse Case Senario: Can't Believe My Luck!

Okay so before we leave the house yesterday for our 4 hour trip to Oakland my daughter starts saying her stomach hurts. Now you have to understand that she says this sometimes when she wants attention or gets nervous, and she gets carsick a lot. So I think that it is just nerves about leaving daddy and going on the trip, so we take off. Then 10 minutes into the drive she throws up, but she seems completely fine afterwards, so my dad talks me into continuing on. 2 hours later down the road, she throws up again, we stop for some food and she eats alittle and sleeps for awhile and she seems completely fine when she wakes up. We get to San Francisco and we walk around alittle, she is bouncing around, so I think, "Okay we are good to go!" Then we eat dinner and take the train to the show, it has now been 7 hours since the last vomit attack.
We got ellipse wristbands and were told that, "We take special care of kids and kids always get in the ellipse." They didn't even scan our tickets, just pulled us aside. We go in and get a great spot on the tip of the rail then around 7:30 she says she isn't feeling well, we go to the restroom, and nothing. So I asked a medic if they had somewhere quiet we could sit. She and I spent all of the Damian Marley show in a back room somewhere in the arena (temptation to wander was very great). Finally the doctors decided to give her a shot in the ass to stop the nausea (envision 3 medics and me holding her down while she is screaming bloody murder). However, the medicine didn't work and she threw up at about 8:50 and she felt better, so with a barf bucket in tow, we went back to the ellipse, where my dad was still holding our spot on the tip. She stayed awake for COBL and Vertigo, then she slept through most of the next 2 or 3 songs (adorably clutching a piece of confetti in her hand). I was so worried Bono would see her asleep and say something and she would start vomiting in front of him! Instead she woke up and started to vomit inside the Bomb Shelter during Beautiful Day, believe me, people parted like the red sea, and we all went back to the medical room together and my dad decided to sit with her for awhile. I went back to the ellipse (feeling like the worse mother in the world). I had lost my railing spot where the LAPOE solo goes on, and ended up watched the show from the
Adamish side until Sunday Bloody Sunday, when guilt finally won out (all I could hear was her saying, "Mommy I just want to go back to the hotel.")
So I went up to the medical room and collected dad and kidlet, a staff member offered to find us seats to finish watching the show, but I felt so awful for my kiddo that I decided I wouldn't enjoy the show anyway and we left around 10:00. Sometimes being a parent sucks and it has to take priority over one's insanity! She vomited again on the train, and when we got back to the hotel she fell immediately asleep. Then I noticed that our room overlooked the back parking garage for the Four Seasons Hotel, so I watched for awhile and around 11:55pm, a line of black cars and 3 large, black SUV's with a 6 police motorcycle escort pulled in. It had to be the guys coming back to their hotel. So that was kind of a wierd ending to the night. My kid continued to throw up throughout the night and I got about an hour of sleep, so we took off for home early this morning and of course she is completely fine now that we are home again! I'm sure it must be some sort of a Karma thing! I was so excited about the fact that kids get into the ellipse that I was struck down for it! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my dad and I don't get sick now too! I think I am U2'd out for awhile. Got a few good pictures and some of my daughter sleeping on the medical room floor, should make an interesting scrapbook page! That's life!!! BTW I met Tryan101 in the ellipse too. There were about 6 kids that I could see and one little girl who was about 3 years old.

So to answer questions: we got there around 5:30 and were way back in the line, we finally go in around 6:15ish, when we got into the arena a lady pulled us aside and said to go straight to the special wristband table and that kids always get in. We had a great spot on the tip of the ellipse and people were really nice, staff and fans. Enjoy the show.

Faith - I hope your daughter is feeling better now:hug: . I'm sorry that after all the anticipation and stuff leading up to the show that it turned out this way for you. Such is life... I'm glad you got to enjoy a little bit of it from the ellipse. Did you proceed to wander around the hotel at all? :shifty:

Any chance you will make it to any other shows this leg?

I was actually in a hotel next to the FSH, so no wandering. Don't think there will be any other shows. Though Portland is only 430 miles away! Seems that my wallet can't afford Portland ticket prices. I am on break Dec. 19th... but I think it is a pipe dream.
Cameron is doing fine now. It was just a 24 hour bug it seems.

Oh Faith, I hope your daughter is feeling better soon...I did notice that she disappeared :( I felt guilty going yesterday as I had to leave my son at home with dad and he had been running a fever since late Sunday night, and he prefers me when he is sick. Of course last time he was sick was in April when I was going to the San Jose show and once again had to leave him with a fever and ear infection :( I also was about to leave the show half way thru as I am pregnant, and the heat really started getting to me and I felt like I was going to faint. I managed to make it thru, but I have never wanted a show to end so quickly and it wasn't because of the music.

Sorry to hear that rccj, I know I got to the point that even watching Bono right in front of me wasn't as powerful as the tug of motherhood at my heart. I think it is some kind of built in radar that happens at conception! Now that I am home the let down is starting to happen, especially as I read about other people's experiences and I think of all the "could have beens". I told my husband, (who didn't go because he couldn't get tseem down for the time off of work, hence grandpa) that don't be surprised if I am down for the next few days. I am kind of pissed off at the fates right now too!

And i thought things were bad last night when my 5 year old refused to stand up with the concert started....at least she wasn't sick. Sorry to hear your concert experience wasn't quite what you were expecting.

As for kids at the concert. Kudos to the wrist band crew, production crew and security. I cannot begin to tell you how friendly they were....especially the U2 production staff. That guy who follows Bono around the eclipse when he's out walking around on it....the security type who wears the big headphones
came up to me 3 times to make sure my daughter was ok. First time he wanted to make sure she had earplugs, second time he said it would be ok for me to put her on my shoulders if I wanted to ( I would have but she didn't want to) and the third time he asked if she wanted to move up to the front of the eclipse and stand in that area by the exit they don't allow people to stand in so she could see better Approx 15 other people (security and other fans) also offered earplugs for her. It's one thing to 'bend the rules' so kids get inside the eclipse, but quite another to ensure they are safe, can see things, etc. We didn't make it thru the whole concert as she was getting tired, but at least she can now say her first concert she ever attended was seeing U2 from inside the eclipse....unlike her aunt who has to answer that question (i.e., 1st concert) by saying New Kids on the Block...ouch!!

I agree, the staff and crew were sooooo nice and understanding. They were very concerned about kids and their ears and comfort. It was great besides the vomiting!

U2 GA tickets: $350
Union Square Hotel: $200
Seeing your kid vomit in the ellipse: Priceless

BTW my dad keeps saying "I could have reached out and touched Bono!" he was pretty impressed with the group and concert and he really wasn't a fan. He also read the editorial in the SF Chronical yesterday and called me to tell me about it. He says, "At least now I know about his causes." Ah a new U2 convert in the works!

BTW for those who got to see the whole show on 11/8 Oakland: who was the little girl who lead the NO MORE chant in Sunday Bloody Sunday? Was it the blond girl with Tryan101 or the little 3-4 year old with the blue headphones, or some other little girl that I didn't see? Anyone got any pictures?

No kids on stage for night 2. I kept holding Sarah up but she didn't get much attention. Jason was wearing his onstage photo shirt sitting at the tip on the rail, and Bono's head security guy chatted with him a number of times, but that was about it. He did manage to get a drumstick though after LAPOE.

Sarah got a wave and smile from Larry, and Ann held up our "U2 ROQS" license plate for Adam, which he seemed to got a kick out of so he stopped and played in front of us for a little bit. I'll post a pic of that later.
