Bono Discusses the World's Poor With Bush

By NEDRA PICKLER

WASHINGTON - Before getting on stage before his fans in a Wednesday night concert, U2 frontman Bono bent President Bush's ear about the world's poor.

The rock star and the president had lunch in the private dining room off the Oval Office, ordering from the menu at the same mess hall where White House staffers get their lunch. Bush, dressed in the classic presidential uniform of suit and red tie, also showed Bono, dressed in his trademark black jeans and sunglasses, around the Oval Office.

Bono told Rolling Stone magazine in an interview before they dined that he had no fear of meeting Bush or any other world leader.

"They should be afraid, because they will be held accountable for what happened on their watch," Bono told the magazine for an article on newsstands Friday. "I'm representing the poorest and the most vulnerable people. On a spiritual level, I have that with me. I'm throwing a punch, and the fist belongs to people who can't be in the room, whose rage, whose anger, whose hurt I represent.

"The moral force is way beyond mine, it's an argument that has much more weight than I have. So I'm not feeling nervous."

Over an hour and 40 minute meeting, Bono and Bush discussed debt relief, AIDS, malaria and world trade, said presidential spokesman Scott McClellan. McClellan said they also talked about the concerts that U2 was preparing to put on at Washington's MCI Center Wednesday and Thursday night.

In the Rolling Stone interview, Bono heaped praise on Bush for providing $15 billion to help fight AIDS in Africa, money that is helping pay for anti-retroviral drugs. He said he was disappointed that Bush and Congress had cut the Millennium Challenge program that gives foreign aid to countries that pursue political, economic and human rights reforms, but he'll keep pushing them to fund the full amount that the president promised.

Bono said he is "capable of having a row" if he doesn't get what he wants. He said he once criticized Bush for not getting the Millennium Challenge money out quick enough and was rebuked for it.

"One senator threw a newspaper at me in a meeting. 'How dare you disrespect the president of the United States!'" Bono told the magazine.

Bono said he doesn't support any president from the left or the right, but he has a hard time criticizing Bush after he has sent the money to Africa. He said he's made it clear that he doesn't support the war in Iraq, but he doesn't campaign against it because his main priority is helping the poor and disadvantaged.

"I work for them," Bono said. "If me not shooting my mouth off about the war in Iraq is the price I pay, then I'm prepared to pay it."

But, he added, "I'm a big-mouthed Irish rock star. Of course it frustrates me."

I prefer the revolted Bono of the 80's..... without a doubt. But I respect his work, it's great to do that..... but it must hurt to lick Bush's ass to get some money....really hurt....

He obviously disagrees with Bush's policies but because he cares most about the debt-relief campaign, he has to TRY to appear impartial.

I still don't buy a lot of this...Bono, give them some of your millions as well if you're so genuinely concerned...lead by example.

Flame away, liberals...

Just curious.....why do you assume he hasn't given a significant amount of his own money? The band has never publicised what they give to charity, but I'm willing to bet it's a lot.

Why would you assume that anybody who disagrees with you is a liberal? Isn't the article about Bush working with Bono on the issue?

As for Bono's money, I'm sure he gives a good deal. For every car or house he owns, he probably donates an equal or greater amount of money to a charity so he can sleep at night. That's how 'rock star guilt' like Bono's works. From what I hear, Harrison Ford is the same way. He donates a huge amount of money to charities, but he doesn't publicize it.

The band donated their proceeds from their Dublin gigs this summer to the ONE campaign. All four of them -- actually, I'm pretty sure Paul McG gave too. So there you go.

And what was the article a few years ago -- Rolling Stone? -- that ended with Bono quietly slipping $200 to a homeless guy and his bodyguard whispers, "Happens all the time"? Anyone remember that?

This is how we say, "boo-yah."

I bet you Bush said the word "Terrorism" or "Terrorists" at least once :blahblah:

He´s so close minded that he thinks that the WHOLE WORLD live worried about terrorism...while 2000 millions people don´t have drinkable water... and the US parlament aproved extra 50 billion dollars for his war against Irak because of his request ... how come they talk about end of poverty?

 He's totally right.

I forget the verse, but there is defenitely something in the NT, some quote of Jesus's where He says something to the effect of if you are going to give, better to give privately, b/c it will be a better show of faith. Jesus was privately (well, not so privately, b/c He talked about it a lot ) ticked off at the Pharisees, the local rich and influential set, who boasted all the time about what good Jews they were and how much they gave to charity. Well, we all know who had Him killed. I think about this a lot, and with Katrina it was really hard to give in private, b/c so many places taking charity were public...

Funny, reding this post...my talking about Our Lord as if He had been a celeb...which, come to think of it, He was.......hey, what a thought! What if there had been modern media 2000 yrs ago, and there was a Roman Empire equivalent of Rolling Stone..and Jesus made the cover, (just as, say, Mandela might have 15 yrs ago...) Wonder what THAT interview would hjave been like? Seriously, someone should open a thread on this (if it wouldn't be blasphemous, we could have fun with this... )
